I wrote this song when I was in BUET - I believe 2nd year. 17 of our friends, from the Mechanical Department, batch 87, were going to Cox's Bazar for an excursion. I was invited by my good friend Shubho to join. I had never been to Cox's Bazar before and so I decided to join. Shubho being the thoughtful one, decided to take a guitar with him - I didn't, cause I am always too self-conscious of what people may think. We got on a train to Chittagong, early morning from Dhaka Kamlapur rail station. Train journey to Chittagong was full of singing and bantering - just a blast! Then we got off the train and got in a van - off we go to Cox's Bazar! Excited! I remember, on approaching the bay of Bengal, how hearing the roar of the ocean for the first time in my life was already stirring me from inside - I had never seen an ocean before. Then we drove up to a hilltop to T&T rest house just a few hundred steps from the beach. What a MAGNIFICENT view from the rest house - took my breath away, and probably more. Usually, it takes my senses a while to stomach big exposures. The same happened when I stood in front of the Grand Canyon for the first time - for a moment I thought it was a picture.
All my friends go out to the beach for a cricket match. I stayed back. I had this feeling of sitting down with a guitar and felt like composing. I was sitting with Shubho's guitar on the veranda, watching the white sand beach, the sea, and my dear friends playing - what a wonderful life! what a wonderful world! As I watched the sunset, the ocean roared, and the waves rolled, foamed, sparkled and reflected the sunlight - like gems and pearls. The evening rolled in, everything was dark, lights off (-: only the ocean stayed awake with its constant roar. Time stopped for me in ecstasy, teared up in a sense of gratefulness, and the moment of love with the Universe got etched in my heart - my words came out softly without much resistance and "Obak Bhalobasha" was born. Every time I sing the song, I close my eyes and I am taken away to that moment - every time!
The song may have taken different words if I did not write the song in Cox's Bazar - so special thanks to Shubho for carrying his guitar. Thanks to all my friends who accompanied us on a memorable journey! If you are ever in Cox's Bazar - see if you can go to the T&T rest house, go to the roof, and listen to the song at night - you might feel what I felt!
