      Hey,@@GruntProof,
      If I paint the outer cover with a spray paint or dye with colour, will it affect the water proof and other qualities?
      I might wanna dye or paint it with green or brown colour for a better camouflaging.

    I was issued that jacket for Iraq. Also issued the tent later. The design is great. I loved them both! Unfortunately had to turn them back into Supply with leaving Army. I just got this tent from a dealer nearby for $50! Smells a bit but I will take care of that. Great video!! Enjoy that down jacket!

    Greetings from across the pond: the UK. Ive had one of these for about a year. Indeed its Squaddie proof as we may call our lads and lasses in the Army. I have found it to be very intuitive and practical. Its a bit weird to find so much black inside a tent but its spacious and practical so when its time to hit the sack you wont notice. Its hard wearing and although the camouflage isn't too practical in the spring and summer for stealth camping, in the autumn and winter it blends in with the grey sky, and sparse woodland well enough. A good review

    Good video, thanks! Idea: Spray a stripe of paint across the tent poles so it's easier to see which one belongs where. And, for the keyboard commandos, no one sets up a tent under fire. SemperFi!

  • @oldsoldier181
    @oldsoldier181 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I had one of these, given to me. I also bough the Lightfighter 1 in OCP, both of which the purpose is motorcycle camping. I ended up keeping the Lightfighter one, just because it has two full vestibules I can use in bad weather. These one person tents are great though for the bike-all in one shelters that, if its just for a night or two, work perfect. If I am going for several nights, I take a larger tent-but overnights, these are ideal.
    Also, the model you have, has that old familiar wet weather bag "stink". I got out in 04, went in in 88-all 11B. We didnt have tents (with th exception of the shelter half, which was never used), we just used our ponchos. Hell, when we got the MSS system, I was ecstatic! That was a tent that was the size of our old school sleeping bags!!! I remember the first night using it...we got frost and freezing rain. Didnt feel a thing!!!

    Great video, if it ain't raining you ain't training. I used to hump 4 season North Face tents up the sides of mountains in my younger years. I was wondering why you roll the tent back up. We would stuff the rain fly into the sack first then the tent and finally ground cloth on top and cinch the bag closed. The poles would be stored in the pack vertically along the back pad so they don't bend. When you pull the tent system out of the bag its in order to set up again. Also, the thinking back then was, if you keep folding the tent along the same lines it will eventually damage the waterproofing because you are stretching the fibers to make a fold. Anywho, hope this helps.

    • @GruntProof
      @GruntProof  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've heard of that and I do it with my tarps. I haven't had any issues with the tent though. If it is pouring and I wanna get out of there, I will just stuff it all in the top of my ruck

    • @robertbryant6939
      @robertbryant6939 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm pretty sure thr old conventional wisdom has changed - the thinking being that stuffing creates tons of tiny creases which are simply duplicated (despite thinking they aren't replicated - they are) whereas folding and rolling neatly limits the creases to a few areas while leaving large panels unaffected by the creases stuffing creates.

    Because of your first video on this tent that I watched again today because it popped up, i was checking them out on line, and a Sportsman’s Guide ad had a used one for $109.
    That tent is now sold and coming to me.
    It is a groovy little setup you can throw anywhere with serious capacity. Six pounds for that sort of four season, durability luxury of space and storage with performance is terrific.
    I had some concern with the second hand aspect until you mentioned your eight years with tent.....and the tumble dry...
    Thanks.

    That “wrong pole” did my heart good. I was sitting here saying how the heck did he know that was the right pole?🤔 Thanks. I bought one of these not long ago and for me it was a royal bitch to set up because the rain fly pole would get stuck and jammed up going thru the sleeves on top of the fly and then when I’d try and back the pole out a little to unjam it the shock corded sections would come apart and then it would be next to impossible to put them back together inside the sleeve (and you can’t pull the pole out UNTIL you put all the sections back together) without part of the sleeve getting jammed in between the sections that came apart. You have convinced me to dig this tent out of the closet I tossed it to the back of and give it another chance. Thank you again.

    Great video, thanks for doing this. From a product design standpoint, the only "problem" I noticed was that one of the rods is not the same size as the other two, which slowed you down a bit. It would be better if they were all the same length, but if not that, then the shorter one should be a different color. Or of course you could just wrap some tape around it, so you know at a glance that it's the short one.

    I pulled the trigger on this, based off of your review. I just purchased this tent, without the poles or stakes. I'm going to improvise those things...meaning I bought some poles that should fit the tent. Ultralight sounds great, but I don't trust it, because it seems to be too lite. That and the fact that I don't have 1'000's of dollars to afford an ultralight setup. I guess its the debate between, get the gear that makes your life a little easier or acclimate to heavier, more durable that one can obtain at an affordable price. The guys that fought WWII, Korean and Vietnam would give their left nut for a tent like that, or the USMC ILBE (which I have.)

    I have not been in the military I’m a fireman and I was able to set the tent up extremely easy with the proper sleeping bag and pads I was very comfortable it kept the wind out I slept until late in the day could not tell it was even daytime out Me and one other person fit in this tent we were both pretty comfortable in it. Thinking about getting the light fighter two-man marine tent so I can fit two colors of PBR in there💪🇺🇸.

    Cool Randall. I just dont see how that tent, its setup/ break down or weight can bee an issue for anybody. I would have loved that tent for motorcycle camping back in the day. Or for hiking. Because of injuries over the years I dont use tents anymore. Im a hammock guy now. Its nice to see you informing the buttercups out there. Live Life Large, Its Shorter Than You Think!

    Damp cold hurts.
    A lot of civilian gear is semi-disposable; intended for one season or expedition of hard use, then replaced. GI gear is intended to last indefinitely, through years hard use and multiple issues to possibly several different individuals or units. I've noticed that complaints of gear failure soared when light weight became a military priority and civvy-style gear was used in combat conditions.

    The flaw with this system is if you are in a torrential downpour the inner will be soaked by the time you get the fly over the top. A system that puts both the inner and the fly up together is better but from an ex infanteer's point of view it's an improvement over a basha!

    That looks a lot like my Eureka Backcountry 1. The third pole on mine always wants to take a different shape every time I set it up, never lays the same way twice. lol Be careful with stuff sacks. Mine blew away when I wasn't looking, since it was near a lake I couldn't find it in the woods or see it on the water. Pack your empty stuff sacks right into your pack or put something heavy on it.

    Many thanks! After your review elsewhere, I ordered an ICS on eBay for a planned drive-and-camp tour of our marvelous country. I do have a question. After camping in well below freezing conditions at the base of Mt. Rainier, I discovered the value of a tent liner. My breath was freezing on the nylon walls of the tent. Every burst of wind resulted in tiny ice particles falling on my face. As soon as I got back, I turned an old cotton sheet into a tent liner. Cotton absorbs moisture rather than raining it down. I know the military makes cotton liners for its large tents. Did it ever make one for the ICS? If not, I imagine it's be quite easy to make one for ourselves.

    • @Flaschenkost
      @Flaschenkost 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      But, to be completely honest, I checked again: I think it was down to the specific tent itself or the waterproofing spray I've used with it in the past.Because the black rubber lining inside has always tended to stick together even after hand washing in the past, so that it later came away from the fabric when I pulled it apart. I still wouldn't put it back in the tumble dryer. Nevertheless the tent itself is great and currently available really cheaply in Germany from Mogeha Army if you need one in reserve ;)

    I'm about to get an MSS system and I've already got a GI foam ground pad. Do I need to pick up an air pad or self inflating mat to go with the foam pad for winter camping with the MSS? Local temps will probably be 25-28 degrees for the low.

      I use the MSS system and if you are a side sleeper, the foam and a 1 in. inflatable won't be enough for comfort....pressure points on hips/shoulders. I have the older woodland mss so side sleeping is easier than the newer, lighter mummy style bag. The woodland is wider. I'd go w/the 2 in. insulated bag for all seasons comfort.

    If I paint the outer cover with a spray paint or dye with colour, will it affect the water proof and other qualities?

    I bought one of these off ebay and the fly was stuck together....took my time and got it opened up.....the black coating on the inside of the fly delaminated, leaving a white sticky adhesive on the material. I like the tent. The waterproof floor black coating is fine.
    Just wondering if you have suggestions to fix the coating.
