Robin is in free fall before Batman drops the Batarang. Because Robin and the Batarang experience the same acceleration due to gravity, there's no way that the Batarang would have ever caught up with Robin. Never mind his unrealistically strong teeth, he would have never got the chance to grab it anyway.
