Berlin is the capital of Germany, being the country's largest city with approximately 3.6 million inhabitants and covering an area of approximately 892 km² (2020). Berlin is, at the same time, one of the 16 federal states with its own state government, called the "Senate". Its position on the map is like an island completely surrounded by Brandenburg. It is crossed by the rivers Spree and Havel. It is the center of the Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan Region, which has around six million residents from 180 nations. Due to its location on the European Plain, Berlin is influenced by a seasonally temperate climate. Around a third of the city's territory consists of forests, parks, gardens, rivers and lakes.
First attested in the 13th century, Berlin was the capital of the Brandenburg Margrave (1417-1701), the Kingdom of Prussia (1701-1918), the German Empire (1871-1918), the Weimar Republic (1919- 1933) and of the Third Reich (1933-1945). In the 1920s, Berlin was the third largest municipality in the world. After World War II, the city was divided; East Berlin became the capital of East Germany, and West Berlin became a de facto enclave of West Germany, enclosed by the Berlin Wall (1961-1989). Following German reunification in 1990, Berlin once again became the capital of all of Germany.
Berlin is a global city of culture, politics, media and science. Its economy is based on high-tech companies and the sphere of services. The city has a diverse range of creative industries, research facilities, media corporations and convention venues. Berlin serves as a continental hub for air and rail transport and has a very complex public transport network. The metropolis is a popular tourist destination. Significant branches of the industrial sector include IT, pharmaceuticals, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, construction and electronics.
Modern Berlin is home to renowned universities, orchestras, museums, entertainment venues and hosts many sporting events. It is a sought after location for international film productions. The city is known for its festivals, diverse architecture, nightlife, contemporary arts and high quality of life. Over the past decade, Berlin has witnessed a cosmopolitan entrepreneurial scene.
The oldest records of settlements on the territory of present-day Berlin are a wooden rod dating from about 1192 and the remains of a wooden house, dating from 1174 and found in 2012 in an excavation in Berlin Mitte. The first written documents of fairs on the territory of present-day Berlin date from the end of the 12th century. Spandau is first mentioned in 1197, and Köpenick in 1209, but these territories did not join Berlin until 1920.
