I ride horses (we have our own little yard, arena, paddocks etc with a few horses). I also ride Down Hill mountain bike trails and bike parks. MIPS has been in our cycle helmets here for years and it’s great to see its come to equestrian helmets. Thank you. I see MIPS as essential now.
Thanks for the info!! Although, I will say that I disagree with your assessment of bicycle helmets. I believe you may be misinformed on their design. Bicycle helmets, like helmets designed for horse riding, motorcycle riding, etc. are designed to protect from impacts in any and all directions. They also use tech to protect from torsional force as well. I have not compared the exact testing numbers between bicycle and horse riding helmets, but it appears from a cursory look that they are very comparable. I do agree that one should by the gear that goes with the sport. But I believe that a bicycle helmet will provide the same protection as a specific horse riding helmet will. Additionally, as with all safety gear, quality is everything. Not all helmets are equal in any category. There is a saying "Don't put a priceless head in a cheap helmet." And that applies to all helmets.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts on using Bicycle helmets when horse riding. I pulled some info for this video from the reports. I am sure Bicycle helmets have been improved and certain models may provide more advanced Head injury protection. I agree with you that people should use sport specific helmets whenever possible. And if I were jumping on a horse and only had a bicycle helmet, that would definitely be preferable to no helmet at all! However dedicated horse riding helmets do differ from bicycle helmets in shape for a reason. The height of a fall from a horse is far greater than falls from a bicycle and the trajectory of a horse fall may be quite different than a bicycle fall. I am citing a UCONN Department of Animal Science report here! And the newer MIPS technology added to horse riding helmets makes a huge difference in rotational head injury protection. I know many Bicycle helmets as well as motorcycle, and snow sport helmets carry it as well. Let’s all advocate for safety in our sports! 😊🐴
