What I worry about most with replacing my default Steam deck screen, is the fact it’s coming from a third party manufacturer whom I’ve never heard of before. Also would have been cool to have a higher refresh rate and a brighter screen.
Agreed. If DeckHD releases a new version that's OLED with an even higher refresh rate than the stock Valve screen on the Deck OLED, I'll buy it. I will use the opportunity to just go ahead and buy a clear ExtremeRate Deck shell, Playstation buttons (because I prefer them over ABXY), hall effect Gulikit sticks and an SSD upgrade so that I can do it all in one go and never have to open my Deck again. If a 2TB 2230 NVMe comes out before too long, I'll be getting that so that my Deck is 100% customized to the max with the best upgrades. I'm holding off on buying a Deck OLED simply because I don't really want to even bother spending that much on a Deck that doesn't increase performance at all. If Valve would make a new Deck available in other colors, with an improved screen, more storage and improved performance for the Deck 2, I think it will be a good enough time to buy the full upgrade. Until then, the Deck OLED is really just a good option for new buyers. I don't think the Deck OLED is good enough to warrant moving from the original Deck to the OLED simply because the 90Hz screen is useless considering most games struggle to run at 60 fps.
I just wanted to say: Since my first ever Steam Deck was the new OLED model, I don't have intentions to use DeckHD. However, your guide is the most cautiously helpful one on the worst portion of a Steam Deck mod a lot more people are looking into, the full shell swap. There's no variant for the OLED deck yet on this, but when it does, I expect myself and many others to look into it too. I've repaired fragile tech like phones and computers before myself, and once you have a little bit of comfort over the hump of not knowing what to do at all, you can quickly feel good about projects like these. However, most of the videos I've seen of doing shell swaps (which also involve removing the display) have some kind of flaw to them. Some fully break their displays, many use a metal pick included with certain kits and scratch away the bezel paint, some slice through a ribbon cable, and others get a bit too aggressive cleaning the adhesive. How this video showcases it is a perfect representation of doing this safely. Use plastic picks (they're way safer to avoid scraping bezel paint or slicing a cable), use slow, cautious heat on each corner, and be patient in using the driest methods possible to clean out the adhesive (isopropyl seeped into one TH-camr's screen). This is a scary repair IF you get antsy and try to rush it. Otherwise, you can methodically trade some extra time to ensure it gets safely done.
Wow, definitely one of the most flattering comments I've gotten, thank you so much! Although big thanks go to the DeckHD team for their instructions I adapted and the kit containing all the right tools for the job.
@@MrMario2011 I can't stress enough (again, as someone who did tech repair for half a decade and still dabble) how important good tools are. Going back to the shell replacement mod for Steam Deck, extremeRate and JSAUX are the two big boys at the table right now for them. The difference is that while both actual shells are pretty solid and well-built, extremeRate sends you one of the worst suctions cups ever and a metal pick to slice the adhesive. Meanwhile, JSAUX sends plastic picks, a better suction cup, and an even better toolkit that includes a full screw/part organization container. It makes such a big difference. At the end of the day though, it's general knowledge that has the most value on stuff like this. I could get JSAUX's much better toolset, and following a generic guide, could easily slice through a ribbon cable or crack the screen. It's good, comprehensive and cautious guides like this that help the most. Emphasizing taking it slow, using better tools, taking precautions, all that stuff. That's why I had to comment, I think it's important people understand that if it's their first time doing something this big.
I can see how this would also be useful to those planning on doing a shell replacement. A lot of people damage their screen slightly when they transfer the screen to a new shell. It's just easier having a whole new screen with the new shell. I personally won't be replacing the shell or screen as I like the vanilla look of the Deck.
Exactly why I got the DeckHD. You have to remove the display during a shell swap anyway to get at the screws behind the screen, so why not take the time to upgrade the display as well? An OLED replacement isn't available for the LCD Steam Decks but the DeckHD is available as an upgrade. I will say, from my experience, having the DeckHD installed is really nice. Some things are smaller on-screen and the scaling changes aren't perfect, but playing lighter games that run at 60fps in 1920x1200 give you so much more sharpness and better visibility. I struggled playing Battlebit Remastered on the Deck previous because it was difficult to see enemies beyond maybe 100 meters or so. After installing the DeckHD, it is not much easier to see enemies at greater distances because of the increased sharpness. I really like the DeckHD screen and I hope that once the BIOS is open-sourced at the end of 2024, Valve adds official BIOS support for the DeckHD screen.
I feel like 1920x1200 is a little too much for the hardware if you're using your Deck to play games. I would replace the screen in a heartbeat if there was an OLED upgrade or simply a better IPS panel with at least 100% sRGB coverage and the original 1280x800 resolution.
Thankfully running games by default will still render at 1280x800, so the performance can remain the same if the drop to a higher resolution is too much.
@@pcm720yes, artifacts which will be a lot less noticable than the benefits it brings thanks to the small screen size. 1200p is still relatively low resolution by gaming tablet standards (my 350 dollar Lenovo Legion Y700 is a 1600p tablet with a WAY better screen than the Deck will probably ever get). For me, DPI/PPI on a 7" 1280x800 display for a gaming device like this is good enough, I just use my 11" iPad Pro for everything else.
in my opinion the steam deck still looks great as it is, however, i'll love to buy one of these kits if they put an oled screen and reduce the Bezel thickness to get more screen view......i hope the developers of this mod keep in mind these requests from all of steam deck users and we can enjoy even more this amazing console. thanks for the video.
Neat, didn't think about his from a non gaming angle before. Certain emulator configuration menus had or possibly still have issues showing all the UI on the an 800p monitor. This is another reason emudeck is so useful for deck owners. You couldn't reach the yuzu gyro config button unless you docked the deck to a 1080p display. I don't think this mod is for me. But it sure is neat.
You can change the (virtual) resolution of the emulator in gaming mode as explained at 42:00, except instead of selecting "Native", select something like "1920x1200". If you're in desktop mode and don't want to change KDE's DPI settings, you can hold Alt or Super, which can be assigned to buttons in the desktop mode controller config, and drag the window from anywhere (KDE supports this, though I'm not sure if it's enabled by default on SteamOS).
Thanks for the thorough review, install, setup and comparison, really helps. I'm glad that they had the guts to use LCD. If I was going to pay hundreds of dollars for an aftermarket screen, I'd want it to last more than 5 years of regular use.
Great video and overview. Nice step by step installation as well. Idk if its necessary but you can use the hair dryer or heat gun on the adhesive strips before you put the new screen in. This will help activate the adhesive strips better. Works on iPads and phones at least.
I love the idea of this but the only way I would personally do this would be if I was replacing the shell, joysticks, internal SSD and the screen all at the same time. TBH the screen replacement alone isn't worth the amount of work and potential of damaging components.
Great video. Quick question how is the contrast on this screen. One thing I dislike about the original Anti glare screen is it destroys the contrast when light hits it directly. In some ways the normal screen on the Steam Deck looks more contrasty and is brighter than the Anti glare one that comes in the 512gb version. How is this screen with respect to black level performance and is it substantially better than the original non Anti glare screen?
Blaika sure does get around when it comes to consoles and hardware mods. It feels like there hasn't been more than a month in the last year where he didn't either publish or help develop something interesting.
If this was Amoled with less bezel, id buy it immediately. But as it stands its just a slight resolution and color bump. The extra res and slight color boost i could care less about. But if it got the color boost it would have gotten from an OLED panel, now thats something different. Id turn the steamdeck into my primary media consumption device

Thanks for the great review! I have a problem with the original Steam Deck screen - it gives me headaches. It seems that the problem is that the screen uses PWM (pulse-width modulation) to dim brightness. Basically, it flickers at really high frequence (something like 1000 Hz) which is unnoticeable for most. But a small minority of people are sensivite to this flickering and get eye strain, headaches, motion sickness or even full-blown migraines. This flickering usually can be seen when filming the screen in slow motion camera mode (the flickering becomes more pronounced on lower brightness). Could you please try it and see if the new screen has the same flickering? If it's flicker-free, then I'll finally be able to use Steam Deck!
I think resolution isnt really the issue here. What we need is to get rid of those black bezels, get a higher refresh rate and deeper blacks. a higher res only tanks performance
@@MrMario2011 I understand valve having to budget but I think someone else could make a solution. I do hope for the deck 2 they don't go for a stupid 16:8 resolution so we don't have weird scaling problems in certain games and emulation

Is it possible to use this screen and play at 800p still and still have improvements? My bro has an ally rog and I love that screen. It's so bright and vibrant compared to steamdeck.
I'd recommend taking a look at the installation portion and see how it looks there for you. I'd bet it would be easier since the Steam Deck was designed to be easily repairable and all the components are bigger.
I can't do any of that I'll totally ruin my deck I still want to get one too but could u take the new screen to best buy and have geeksquad switch the screens?
Can you do this UP grade and also a SSD upgrade at the same time re install steam OS and the then the HD screen software ect I figure might as well do at once if your in there

38:30 The Anti-glare version of the Steam Deck also cuts some of the light the stock display emits, so some of that "washed out" appearance comes from having to bump the backlight brightness higher than the display was color rated for. Could you please try it and see if the new screen has the same flickering? If it's flicker-free, then I'll finally be able to use Steam Deck!
Have you found a non-flickering replacement screen for the Steam Deck or oled vision yet?
@@MikeCowCat No, I've bought Asus Rog Ally and it gives me no problems
@@proradus Thanks, maybe I'll consider getting a rog too.
Is there a way to re-use the old screen as an external screen for the steam deck to dual screen it? Would you sell the old screen?
The biggest steam deck issue is the fact that the stock display doesn't have VRR, the DECKHD is not worth the price without VRR.
I think resolution isnt really the issue here. What we need is to get rid of those black bezels, get a higher refresh rate and deeper blacks. a higher res only tanks performance
I'd love to eliminate those bezels.
@@MrMario2011 I understand valve having to budget but I think someone else could make a solution. I do hope for the deck 2 they don't go for a stupid 16:8 resolution so we don't have weird scaling problems in certain games and emulation
Sold my SteamDeck months later. Never used it as I play easily on my laptop or PC
That's fair, for me I've really liked playing handhelds the last few years for some reason.
Imnot bothered about the resolution but is there a screen you can get that makes the display bigger like the screen on the oled version ? Thanks.
Not that I know of, but I haven't followed screen news.
Main issue I have with the stock screen is the touch, feels like it was dead spots and typing is just a pain. Do you see any improvement on the touch with this screen?
Common issue is running games at a lower res than than screen. Hows the upscaling looking?
So what temperature would you say that is recommended when using the hair dryer or heat gun?
I would only recommend a hair dryer, and I ran it on high for 1 minute about an inch or two away from each corner.
@@MrMario2011 is the heat gun too hot?
You just got another sub great video
What is the game you play while doing the comparison
Stray and Vampire Survivors
Man I was looking forward to this for the upgraded colors, but the install and babysitting don’t seem worth it unfortunately
Could you please make a compairision to the new steam Deck oled. Thanks in advanced
Would it be practical to replace the front plate while swapping the screen?
Is it possible to use this screen and play at 800p still and still have improvements? My bro has an ally rog and I love that screen. It's so bright and vibrant compared to steamdeck.
Yep!
oh. good to see you are locking at hungarian devellopers! keep up the work :D
Absolutely, got a whole lot of international love!
How about battery consumption?
with all the upgrades coming out at this point steam should just sell a steam deck hardware kit
I think they're just wanting to focus on one thing and keep at it, which would just be selling complete Steam Decks 😛
NOICE!!! Do you know when the release is?
I do not, best bet is to join their wait-list.
How close in terms of disassembly is this compared to a switch lite? I'd reckon pretty close right?
I'd recommend taking a look at the installation portion and see how it looks there for you. I'd bet it would be easier since the Steam Deck was designed to be easily repairable and all the components are bigger.
Great video. But im really into the ram upgrade. Hope he comes out with it.
I can't do any of that I'll totally ruin my deck I still want to get one too but could u take the new screen to best buy and have geeksquad switch the screens?
I would absolutely not trust the folks over at Geek Squad to do this.
Excellent video. Thank you.
You are welcome!
Imagine if there was a screen mod that removed the bezels
at the height of the fps where do you want a sacred gift?
And for the battery?
Can you do this UP grade and also a SSD upgrade at the same time re install steam OS and the then the HD screen software ect I figure might as well do at once if your in there
Yes, but I'd recommend one at a time. I would upgrade the SSD first and make sure that works fine, then install the DeckHD.
you get a like from me only because im a huge halo 3 fan
Fantastic game.
Can bestbuy geek squad change the screen of the steam deck bc I am not a person that tinkers with consoles or gaming pcs?
I would not at all recommend or trust Geek Squad with this.
I only wish there'd be a replacement motherboard with 7540/7640/7840 or z1/z1e chips
That would be cool. I wonder if motherboards will come if they ever release a major update to the Deck.
The steam deck can play 120p u just have to set your steam deck to that setting I think the 256gb or 512 would do better playing AAA games then the 64gb deck would but I can't say much I'm a casual gamer my choice of games are normally all indie based games and sometimes I'll play a triple AAA game at times like stray one of my fav games.
Steam deck doesn't need a higher resolution, it needs an OLED screen
Where can you buy it??? Their website says join waitlist
That will be your option for now, it isn't up for sale just yet but should be soon.
I don’t think the steam deck needs 1080p. I would love a OLED upgrade.
Once the deck gets an OLED kit, it'll crush the switch for miles and miles on end
@@JeskidoYTit already crushes the switch, anything crushes the switch. that "console" is weak asf and shouldn't exist
@@bloodfarmer just the multiplayer aspects (joycons) and battery life is light-years better than any other console unfortunately
@@bloodfarmernot that it shouldn’t exist. It’s a 7 year old console, when it came out we were all hyped at the games we could play portable. But age comes for every peice of tech. The switch walked so the deck/ally/new Lenovo could run. In 2017 AMD barely launched the first gen Ryzen cpus. Nvidia was launching the gtx1080. It doesn’t feel like long ago but it was.
The steam deck can operate on 1080p and 1280p you just have to change the settings bc at gamestop the details say that the steam deck display is 1280p.
38:30 The Anti-glare version of the Steam Deck also cuts some of the light the stock display emits, so some of that "washed out" appearance comes from having to bump the backlight brightness higher than the display was color rated for. It's not this bad on non anti-glare displays, but the DeckHD still looks like an overall improvement. Kinda hoping someone manages to get one of those iPad Mini screens into the Steam Deck, maybe call it the "EyeDeck"?
I don't want a screen mod, nor a 32gb ram mod. Someone call me once they can mod higher speed memory onto steamdeck. This would make the most difference.
RIP.
Now we have 90 hz OLED from, Valve.
just missed the pre order 😔
I wish you luck on the next round!
Why am i watching since 26 minutes and i don't even have a steam deck 😭😭😭
Hope it was entertaining!
I wonder if anyone installed this screen onto the steam deck running only WinOS?
I just want a screen without the massive bezels.
They should came up with bazeless screen
That would be slick.
will it support touchscreen?
You can see me prove the touch functionality works 🙂
@MrMario2011 I'm confused. Is this the real product, or is it just showing how to install it with the original version?
MrMario, thank you for this video! Its literally the first rime ive seen your real face :O sounds daft, but from your avatar, i expected you to be kinda chubby, youre actually pretty trim! (No homo) :P
😂 to be fair I was for most of my life, and the facial hair can add that on!
@@MrMario2011 I feel you there bro! I never used to be chubby, I was scrawny until I turned 18, then I got chunky 😂 and yes, a beard can add roundness to one's face I agree with you 😅 great video though, I'm still watching :) sorely wanting this 😂 I don't know whether it would be good for me long term cos I have no idea about power consumption etc
What are the chances that i'll mess this up
By the way, this was a very, very, incredibly cohersive tutorial. I've even thought about it momentarily.
I'll take that as a compliment 😂
As for risks, any modification runs a risk of damage, especially one like this. I can only recommend watching the video and determine your comfort level, difficulty is subjective so FOR ME it was easy, but I know it isn't easy for everyone.
@@MrMario2011 the risk factor increases depending on the incompetence of oneself which i have plenty to spare* of. Could probably even donate it in terms of quantity. Anyway, i try to be as careful as possible which in turn turns into crap in my case. But if i approach any modifcations it carelessly and relaxed, things go way smoother usually.
I barely notice any changes if it's not OLED it's not worth it
It isn't for everyone, and that's fine! 🙂
It's not worth the money to get. This is also a third party, which I don't know where the screen is coming from. Especially when we only have 16gb of ram on the deck. 32gb of ram with a higher refresh rate screen replacement would be worth the money. This APU is capable of doing a higher refresh rate. Just my opinion
Tried to clean my screen on my pants for a quick play i was gentle and it broke the screen not covered by valve. The screen in my opinion is a bit fragile , just one swip and broken 😢$139
RIP that's awful, sorry to hear.
Its neet but not the screen Im waiting for, if someone brings out an Glossy OLED that would be the one i Want
Ahhh Vampire Survivors.
It's dangerous, you sink tens of hours into it and it feels like 2 have passed 🤣
All I want is upgrade ur deck to a better GPU +OLED screen. Then steam valve can take my money.
I see many people fn up their decks
Unfortunately that will probably happen, I can only caution people to fully understand the undertaking that happens here and only do it themselves if they feel capable of it!
I'd buy it, if it was OLED.
Unfortunately, it is not. So... skip.
And the black borders are still there around the screen. I don't like those.
so you want play gameboy game the new screen is ok 😅😅 aaa game better keep it orginal thx
Useless screen upgrade, don't worth it for the risk , SSD ok, LCD no
Bruh just buy the steam deck oled 😂
This was recorded months before the announcement 😂
