Few observers seriously expected the Obama administration to revive the Fairness Doctrine, the Federal Communications Commission policy requiring broadcasters to evenhandedly present “conflicting views on controversial issues of public importance.” But it’s shocking to see Obama’s FCC chair shoot it in the head and then dance on its grave.
Nonetheless, the rule remained on the books until this week President Obama’s FCC head Julius Genachowski formally killed it, announcing its death with all the enthusiasm of NewsCorp lobbyist:
“The elimination of the obsolete Fairness Doctrine regulations will remove an unnecessary distraction,” Genachowski said. “Striking this from our books ensures there can be no mistake that what has long been a dead letter remains dead. The Fairness Doctrine holds the potential to chill free speech and the free flow of ideas and was properly abandoned over two decades ago. I am pleased we are removing these and other obsolete rules from our books.”

"...because the threats to the republic, the threats to democracy are too real..." Why does everyone keep repeating the obvious? When are we going to start answering the real questions like: Why would there be threats to America's republic? And: Who would want (or need) to overturn our democracy? Actually, these are not difficult questions to answer but strangely no one is addressing them. Let's face it Trump isn't smart enough to organize his own sock drawer much less a coup to overthrow the government. Trump has an agent provocateur and history gives us a precedent. This is not the first time that there was an attempt to overthrow our government and install a fascist regime lead by an authoritarian stooge sympathetic to billionaires (sound familiar). In 1933-34 many of America's wealthiest and most powerful industrialists, magnates, tycoons and captains of industry (like Dupont, Hearst, J.P.Morgan, Prescott Bush, Rockefeller and Standard Oil to name but a few), conspired to overthrow FDR in what has come to be called the "Wall Street Putsch" and "The Business Plot". These wealthy entities were angry at FDR's New Deal plan which would remove Laissez Faire, create the SEC, regulate the banking industry, and remove the U.S. from the Gold Standard. These entities formed an organization called the American Liberty League and fought to undermine FDR's New Deal while secretly conspiring to overthrow him. FDR felt the actions of his New Deal plan were necessary to help the government get a handle on the nations money supply and allow it to better help those most affected by the Great Depression. The wealthy saw it otherwise and believed it would allow inflation to truncate their fortunes. They had been watching and admiring how Hitler and Mussolini had so quickly repaired their own economies and felt America needed to take a similar fascist approach. I mention this because I believe that what we've been witnessing since 2016 may be a repeat of 1934, albeit different characters but similar reasons. Climate change is presenting an existential threat to certain enormously wealthy and powerful industries, industries that have no intention of allowing themselves to be legislated out of hundreds of billions in future profits. Think about it. When the government starts leaning left and begins listening more and more to the concerns of climate scientists, and when well funded lobbyists and million dollar campaign contributions can no longer guarantee controlling influence over congress, these enormously wealthy and powerful "entities" will seek other ways to protect their fortunes.

@@nickjamesaz1 - Well, no one is particularly concerned about your concerns. Also, yeah, some people may have been charged with insurrection while not actually going into the building because they might have been involved in the planning, organizing and directing others where to go and what to do but stayed outside the building themselves. I don't know given the fact that you didn't cite any specific examples. Wait, so someone that told people on video for several days to go to the Capitol has not been charged and you think he automatically should be? Perhaps they talked to him and discovered that he didn't actually have anything to do with the insurrection but was just encouraging people to go there to express their anger, frustration or simply have their voice heard. That isn't illegal unless they ignore the police officer's direction not to enter the Capitol grounds. Yeah, some of the most obvious organizers are actually cooperating with the authorities. Also, they are being held without trial? You know trials take a long time generally, right? First, the prosecution has to turn over all the evidence they have to the defense and often the defense asks for more time to go over the evidence. Some people have been given bonds while they await trial but those that committed violent acts likely weren't. Nothing about that is unusual or suspect. It sounds like you simply know very little about our criminal justice system.

FDR felt the actions of the New Deal were necessary to help the government get a handle on the nations money supply and allow it to better help those most affected by the Great Depression.

The FCC has no control over Fox News because they don't actually broadcast over public airwaves. They are carried over private cable networks which can offer whatever content they want since they aren't using public resources in order to deliver it. That's why "cable news networks" like NewsMax and OAN get carried on cable as well. They aren't real news networks, but nothing stops cable services from offering their content because they have virtually unlimited number of "channels" unlike traditional TV which is limited by whatever broadcast licenses and frequencies they can secure from the FCC. Cable services are turning more into a clunkier version of youtube that also happen to carry some local TV and bigger cable networks.
