Memphis hosted Eastern powerhouse Indy Eleven this weekend and broke an all-time attendance record at Auto Zone Park with 8571 soccer crazies. The "Beale Street Ballers" got busy early. Memphis put up three forwards in a 4-3-3 lineup. And they pressed high, causing turnovers in Indy Eleven's defense. In the 9th minute, Duane Muckette stripped the ball from a defender and bounced it out wide to the left for Pierre de Silva to one-touch chip it off the short-hop bounce in to Brandon Allen's feet in the box. Allen settled it and got it on to his left foot and bent the ball around the double team and into the goal. And that's how the season started at home for Memphis 901! The next goal was a Zach Carroll header off a corner. Memphis 2 Indy 0. And Memphis didn't let up. Doyle cracked a shot off the keeper's leg on a corner. Koffi stepped up fast and stripped the ball off a midfielder's foot who was receiving a lazy pass in the middle of the field from Indy defender, "Irish" Paddy Barrett. Kofi saw Muckette could gather it, so Kofi bolted foward and Muckette sent it to him. Kofi got a quick poke on it as Barrett, the defender who sent the errant pass was in full slide tackle. The shot headed straight for the keeper who deflected it back into the field and was cleared. The score could have been 4-0 at this point, but Indy weathered the storm. Memphis seemed to get stretched out across the field, losing their shape. Forwards were too forward. Backs were too back. Indy had too much quality not to take advantage. Memphis 2, Indy 4.
