Uau!!! Awesome reaction, mate! I'm half brazilian, and grew up with this song with my mother's family. This was released in the late 70s by a great brazilian song writer Belchior, and Elis rendition of it became iconic (for obvious reasons). The lyric and her performance was highly charged simply because Brazil was living already almost two decades of a horrible, nasty military regime! It gives the lyrics and her singing so much more meaning knowing this. Loved it that you liked her! She's basically our Janis Joplin. I'd highly recommend checking "Aguas de Março" with the genius Tom Jobim.
Omg yeah! I never thought about that, she's like a brazilian Janis Joplin! Now i've always wondered who was the brazilian Frank Sinatra, perhaps Tom Jobim?
Maravilhosa!!! Eterna Elis. 👏👏👏👏👏
This song talks about a difficult period in Brazil. And Elis Regina manifested herself singing strong songs during the military dictatorship in our country.
Ohhh, that's so sweet of you checking our music once more, Luke. Elis is really big and important for us, for our history. This song is about youth disollusion during the dictatorship in Brazil It was really hard times, including to artists. This song is full of sorrow and her voice just showcases that. Thank you. Greetings from Brazil 😘
Every January 19th we remember that terrible day she died in 1982. It was a national tragedy in Brazil. I was 18 years old back then and I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard the sad news.
Thanks for this reaction! Elis Regina was one of the finest Brazilian singers of all time. She died really young, with 36 years old, in 1982. This song was written in 1976 by Belchior, a great Brazilian composer. Belchior demonstrates in this composition his disappointment with his generation. The song has also a lot of references about the Brazilian military dictatorship, a dark period of our history (1964-1985). I'll put here some links of her best interpretations: 1. Hell, yeah, another Brazilian artist react. Elis Regina is considred a LEGEND over here, that died too soon: she passed away at 1982, with 37 years old Have in mind that this song was composed in the middle of the Military Dictatorship. SO, everything has a meaning About the "contando vil metal", I would say that the best translation could be "counting evil money", if that ever makes sense in english. "Vil" just mean "vile", "bad", "evil", something like that
She sings about a generation, hers, that fought back against a military dictatorship in their youth and kind of won, but the economic structure remained pretty much the same in the democracy. In the end of the day, her idols "are in their homes [...] counting the vile metal (coins)", and despite all the "fighting for our freedom/country/people" excitement, they "are the same and live the same as our parents".
Tive o privilégio de assistir Elis várias vezes. O talento imensurável e o timbre belíssimo não veio no DNA. Elis transcende MR é apenas uma boa cantora. Está MUITO longe da genialidade de Elis.
Elis must be the most versatile singer ever (I mean it). She recorded almost 400 songs from so many different styles, offering a different vocal quality every time. And it was never about showing off, but total respect to the lyrics and songs. When she was supposed to be soft, she was the softest, loud, the loudest, deep, the deepest, sad, the saddest, playful, the most playful. Ella Fitzgerald said Elis was one of the top 5 female singers ever. But I think that was an understatement
The lyrics of this song span generations, like a legacy from parents to children. In this world, nothing is new, everything repeats itself, like an endless cycle.
As a Brazilian, I was very happy that you captured the essence of the song (lyrics and interpretation). This song was a kind of anthem for young people during the military dictatorship in Brazil. Congratulations on reading more than Elis' vocal technique.
Elis is an absolute force. She was an amazing lyricist and a huge voice, especially against the military dictatorship Brazil was going through at the time. I love the message of the song. Romaria & Aguas de Março are two of my favorites if you want to explore those.
About the dolls on the scenario, it was a tv show with singers… it was supposed to look like a circus… the dolls would be the audience… As some people explained above, by this time Brazil was under military dictatorship… the musics had to be done using metaphor… the scenario of this show went through the same path… Everything back there needed to be symbolic to avoid prison and torture… Great music and poetry from that era!
I grew up listening to Elis Regina. At age 11, I used to imitate her in front of the mirror. She was by far the greatest singer of her generation and I could say the greatest in Brazil. More than a singer, she was an extremely gifted interpreter who told a story with her voice and her whole body and moved her listeners to the core. I had the privilege to watch her sing "Como Nossos Pais" live twice in 1976 in the very theater where her funeral was held only 6 years later. Your reaction to her singing, so emotional and candid, makes it clear to me that she was not just the greatest in Brazil but one of the greatest in the world. Another song that she sings that is a cry of anguish in the dictatorship years (or "leaden years") in Brazil is Cartomante (Fortune teller), with music by Ivan Lins and lyrics by Vitor Martins. Here it is. th-cam.com/video/3_OSPpbaFvA/w-d-xo.html

To put it into context, at that time Brazil was going through a very repressive dictatorship. Pay close attention to the lyrics of this song, as it is closely linked to the time Brazil was going through.
Elis is maybe the greatest Brazilian interpreter, she was so so much intense that couldn't resist to their emotions and took her life. I'm Chilean but I've lived in Brazil for 47 years. I love the Bossa Nova (Tom Jobim, João Gilberto, Vinicius de Moraes, etc), Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil are simply fabulous! The new generation, unfortunately, is very poor in quality, but in the past we had exccellent bands! like Rappa, Titãs, Legião Urbana....
This performance was part of her legendary show “Falso Brilhante”, a very theatrical staged one. It was presented in a 1.200 seats theater, straight for 14 months (1975/1976), 5 nights a week!
Elis was a genius, her voice went through the soul. Luke, you NEED to react to "Chico Buarque - Construção (Construction) - English subtitles" this song is a MASTERPIECE, the instrumental and lyrics are out of this world, you will freakout IM NOT KIDDING, its amazing
The best singer in the 20 century, singing lyrics about the terribles era on Brazilian history (1964 at 1985) a time of military command in our country. Elis Regina was a voice in the darkness and fear. She's died young and full of dreams in 1982 January 19. I miss her.
Viva a MPB, viva a Bossa Nova Brasileira.
lyrics: I want to tell you my great love, about things I learned on records, I want to tell you how I lived... and everything that happened to me! .. living is better than dreaming and I know that love is a good thing but also that any song is smaller than anyone's life! so take care of my own good in danger on the corner.. they won.. and the traffic light is closed for us who are young, TO HUG YOUR BROTHER and kiss. your girl on the street... is that your arm became your lip and your voice. You ask me about my passion I say I'm enchanted like a new invention, I'm going to stay in this city, I'm not going back to the certificate, because I see shine in the wind, and the smell of a new season I feel everything in the living life of my heart... ... It's already amazing to see you on the street with your hair in the wind, young people gathered together! On the wall of memory I keep this defense that hurts more... MY PAIN IS REALIZING (large letters mean screams and strength of voice) - THINKING OF HAVING DONE EVERYTHING we did... we are still the same, and living. We are still the same and we live like our parents... our titles are still the same and the walls don't fool me! You say that after them, NO ONE MORE APPEARED! You could even say that I'm out of the loop, or I'm making it up, but you're the one who's undercooked and don't see it... IT'S YOU who's undercooked and don't see that new things always come! TODAY I KNOW WHO GAVE ME THE IDEA of a new consciousness when I was young! being at home, KEPT WITH GOD (I didn't understand that part) AND NOW REALIZING that the truth WE HAVE done!, EVERYTHING EVERYTHING WE DID!! we are still the same.. and see, we are still the same, and we live, we are still the same, and we live, STILL LIKE OUR PARENTS!!! -(final part)
This song was created in the context of the military dictatorship, which lasted 24 years in Brazil, and the Aflecence of the desire for liberty of youth of the 1970s.
Hello Guy! Please whenever you have time, show us your reactions to Elis Regina's Romaria (it should be something as Pilgrimage). It is a very special song to us, Brazilians. She sings about the hard times, pain and faith the people from countryside have to endure along life. Hope yon can find its lyrics translation and read them while (or before) you listen to it so you'll have a better understanding of the immense impact that song can bring.
Você precisa assitir Elis Regina cantando Trem Azul.
I will just say this: This song was written by Belchior (you should and must know more about him, his is a GENIUS). And Elis is awesome, she is our Janis Joplin.
They're not just mannequins, they're puppets. She talks about how we are still maneuvering masses for authoritarian governments, as our parents were in the past. It's a song about how in Brazil the dictatorship always returns
You can find here on TH-cam: Elis Regina singing "Atrás da Porta" and "Ò Bêbado e A Equilibrista", both live performances... atrás da porta is about a woman dumped by her (husband?) man, and Bêbado e Equilibrista is more like a politic music, but both are AWESOME performance.. Also, Pilmigrage (Elis Regina - Romaria - Ao Vivo), and Arrastão (Elis Regina - Festival Arrastçao ´she won the brazilian music festival with this song of Edu Lobo, awesome performance, she was so young and so awesome already), both are black and white videos, but worth to check...,
Elis is singing about the frustration of fighting against a (right wing) dictatorship and losing, and finding yourself living just like the past generation. But she leaves us with a threat: the future will come, change will come and there's nothing you can do to stop it. This performance was recorded live in 1976, the hardest period in Brazil's military dictatorship that went from 1964 to 1985.
the puppets represent our parents (and us), the lyrics mainly says that despite everything we do, we are just as our parents, we are puppets (Belchior wrote it during brazilian military dictatorship)

The king of clubs falls, falls, there is nothing left!
The king of spades falls, the king of diamonds falls
The king of clubs falls, falls, there is nothing left!
The king of spades falls, the king of diamonds falls
The king of clubs falls, and falls, there is nothing left!
The king of spades falls, the king of diamonds falls
The king of clubs falls, and falls, there is nothing left!
The king of spades falls, the king of diamonds falls
The king of clubs falls, and falls, there is nothing left!
The king of spades falls, the king of diamonds falls
The king of clubs falls, and falls, there is nothing left!
The king of swords falls, the king of gold falls
The king of wood falls, and falls, there is nothing left!
The king of spades falls, the king of diamonds falls
The king of clubs falls, and falls, there is nothing left!
The king falls
The king falls
She recorded " Golden Slumbers" , the best; you must hear that!
This tune always give me tingles
Emocionante ouvir a Elis Regina. Marcou um momento nosso.
She is awesome
To put it into context, at that time Brazil was going through a very repressive dictatorship. Pay close attention to the lyrics of this song, as it is closely linked to the time Brazil was going through.
I loved your reaction. I cried with you ❤
Elis is maybe the greatest Brazilian interpreter, she was so so much intense that couldn't resist to their emotions and took her life.
Her daughter is just like her. Maria Rita is her name, listening to her too
This performance was part of her legendary show “Falso Brilhante”, a very theatrical staged one.
Obrigado. Eu amo isso
🌾☕🕯 Elis Regina Vive 💙💚💛
She has a movie, call “Elis” if you wanna know more about her ❤️
The best singer in the 20 century, singing lyrics about the terribles era on Brazilian history (1964 at 1985) a time of military command in our country. Elis Regina was a voice in the darkness and fear. She's died young and full of dreams in 1982 January 19. I miss her.
Elis was not a simple singer, she fought against the military dictatorship (1964-1985). This song and this performance represent that fight.
Thank you very much for your testimony at the end of the video about life beyond songs in English and about music from Brazil!!!
Amazing
Welcome back to Brazil
Please , react to Elis and Tom Jobim "Águas de Março" performance.
You can also check her daughter, Maria Rita. Very similar voice.
This song was created in the context of the military dictatorship, which lasted 24 years in Brazil, and the Aflecence of the desire for liberty of youth of the 1970s.
take a look at "Yamandu Costa - samba pro rapha"! Brazilian legend guitar player
Brasil 🇧🇷 i love
Wowww...im frim Brazil. Congrats
Elis eterna e única. Meu amor!
Elis is a Legend!
React to Cassia Eller - Malandragem
Is another brazilian legend!
Fantastic ! Thanks.
The "Little pepper " was brilliant.
I love Elis Regina. She was an amazing brazilian singer.
Sou sortudo por ser brasileiro.
I will just say this: This song was written by Belchior (you should and must know more about him, his is a GENIUS). And Elis is awesome, she is our Janis Joplin.
I've been waiting for this reaction for so long..... Obrigado
React to "Tuatha De Danann", maybe to the song "Trova di Danú", great brasilian band!
I recommend Elis regina Ft Gal Costa
They're not just mannequins, they're puppets. She talks about how we are still maneuvering masses for authoritarian governments, as our parents were in the past. It's a song about how in Brazil the dictatorship always returns
You can find here on TH-cam: Elis Regina singing "Atrás da Porta" and "Ò Bêbado e A Equilibrista", both live performances... atrás da porta is about a woman dumped by her (husband?) man, and Bêbado e Equilibrista is more like a politic music, but both are AWESOME performance..
Also, Pilmigrage (Elis Regina - Romaria - Ao Vivo), and Arrastão (Elis Regina - Festival Arrastçao ´she won the brazilian music festival with this song of Edu Lobo, awesome performance, she was so young and so awesome already), both are black and white videos, but worth to check...,
❤ Elis
You said everything British Guy. You nailed it! And yes, it's like...there is only one Amy Winehouse and one Elis Regina. They are unique
Thanks for reacting to a piece of our culture, man.
Go for "Romaria" and "O Bêbado e a Equilibrista" next
"Águas de Março" along with Tom Jobim is also amazing
@@thiagowwz good one was well
Elis is singing about the frustration of fighting against a (right wing) dictatorship and losing, and finding yourself living just like the past generation.
Amazing reaction, Elis did lived long ago, but as I brazilian and a Elis Regina's fan... I am totally able to say her song and singing is timeless.
That's why she was called "pimentinha" It means little pepper.
