- Hats have been essential accessories through the past 5 centuries of fashion, whether l like them or not. To avoid my historical costumes being incomplete, I did some hot-glue millinery to decorate two hats with feathers and flowers! . . . while complaining lots, and talking about how intimidating historical accuracy can be. These hats are based on the Gainsborough or "Picture Hat" styles of the 1780s, 1890s, and 1900s/Edwardian era.

Hot glue guns have their place; but may I suggest Beacon glue instead? Especially the Beacon Fabric Tac?

I heard someone else on costube use the phrase "historically adequate " and i kinda fell in love with the philosophy it implies.
Sometimes a phrase or a word just instantly digs itself into my vocabulary. This is one of this times!

I feel like if the victorians had access to hot glue guns they would've been using them liberally too. Modern tools are time savers!

I disagree. Decorative elements were changed out to match the dress they were wearing. Hot glue makes this near impossible without ruining the hat base.

Vi didn’t glue the decorations to the hat either, for the same reasons as in the past.
I would say that if something makes creating historical dress and accessories more accessible to people, it should only be appreciated. When you are already going through life with hard mode on, you deserve to have things that improve your quality of life and allow you to take part in the things you love. I'm very privileged to be able bodied and would never imagine looking down on anyone using "easier" methods. Historical accuracy is honestly an informed guess anyway.
I feel pretty confident that while the “gun” part of a hot glue gun may be newer, hot glue in a pot was period. I don’t know if it was used in millinery, but being the experimental progress oriented society they were, it’s entirely plausible.
But I see no need to introduce a metal pot to burn yourself on, or a bunch molten glue in said pot to burn yourself on. Experimental anthropology is worth it if that’s your jam, but otherwise, safety and improved technology exists for a reason.
Almost every animal glue (rabbit skin, fish, gelatine etc) needs to be kept at least warm to be workable, and I'm sure SOMEONE tried it for millinery
@@alexismontez4230 There are fish glues that do not need to be kept warm. Alas I cannot remember the brand name.
I get the hat hating thing. It's because curly hair is basically a hat. We don't need two hats at once.
This comment made me laugh. Also not the direction I thought you were going with this. For me, it's the flattening effect that hats have on curls that I dislike.
Suggestion - next time you want alligator clips for accessories, get electrical alligator clips. They have loops on the end (to solder wires into). but they'll fit feather quills, flower stems, rolled ribbon ends. . .

I hate to throw this in the “ring” most hat bands are discreetly tacked in 2-4 places. That’s it. The reason is because it can be easily changed
Consider adding your feathers etc to a small piece of poster-board as a good glueing backer then glue gator clip to back of poster-board piece
Agreed, i remember my grandmother saying that the hat is just the base, decorative elements are often changed out to match the outfit. They were just hand tacked on.
If you line the inside of your hat with silk or satin it helps to reduce frizz. I've only got one hat, a basketball cap, and I lined it with an old silk pillowcase.
You will not like hats, until you have hats you like.
ok I adore the whole video, but I am particularly grateful for the "shamed out of feminine-coded self expression" aside because I identify with it so hard and it helps me to have words to go with feelings.
My great-grandmother was a milliner in the 1910’s for a large department store in Minneapolis. You’ve no idea how badly I wish we had examples of her work. Nice work! I have no doubt Great-Grandma would approve of working smarter, not harder.

I’m living in France and have discovered that ‘amateur’ in French means someone who does for the love of it, and is the reverse of an insult. Great job! I wear hats all the time with more modern style clothing or retro esque 40's, 50's, and 60's. But I feel Edwardian and back to the 18th century there was more success with a hat pin. Because you can put it through something that wasn't your head or bits of hair. And you don't risk it flying away or sliding off your head. The longer the hat pin, the bigger the drama, and the more it's an ornament itself. A good hat tilt in any Century or decade, the better it looks.

pro tip: do not attempt to use superglue on feathers. for some reason there's a crazy chemical reaction and it gives off noxious smoke

You know, historically accurate and all is nice when you like to do it, but if you don't, just do what you like. It is all in the fun.
For you not liking hats or making them, these turned out pretty good :D If you get bigger feathers in the future you can even swap them out, using those clips were a stroke of genius!
A wooden kabob skewer could help you press the feathers into the glue without the risk of burning. Also I loved this! Thanks for making the vid.
I am sure someone has already mentioned this, but I too have curly hair and find that a hat lined in silk causes much less frizz, the same way that wrapping in silk to sleep can protect your curls. These hats are so cute! Thanks for sharing them!!
All I could think about was the fact that you and Angela Clayton are complete opposites. She loves making hats and all the extra decorations and you don't. 🤣🤣
I admire your fortitude... I have a hat problem, my friend Tiffany owns a sculpted leather mask and hat shop so I have 6 hat boxes each with maybe 2 or more hats in my closet... and more hats elsewhere but to decorate my own this I don’t often do. I personally love hats. I get hats and make a costume to go with it, or just pretend that it works and wear it anyway.

They look great, particularly the black one. Quite stunning and they suit you. I too dislike hats but for a different reason, and that is that when wearing a hat I have a tendency to look like a short, stout, ambulatory mushroom. Hey, on some folk their hat “frames their face” on me.....well “frames” is still appropriate but more in the sense of leaving my face with a 20 to life sentence.....in prison lol

Lol This was oh so much fun! I greatly enjoyed watching you do this. One thing I did want to say is silicone finger tip caps/covers can make working with hot glue much more enjoyable. They save you burns which as a sewer is extra nice since sewing with burnt finger tips is no fun. You can get them cheap and you generally only need one or two to protect the fingers you press with. For those with a dollar tree around Ive seen them selling some in packs and if dollar tree isnt in your area or something you want to support you can find them online.

i figure they had glue back then, so why not use hot glue? the hats turned out wonderful! :)
I love hats, but get sad because there can be an infinite way to trim them, but I only get one choice. I always have regrets. Tip: if you get some craft foam (or 1.5 inch grosgrain ribbon) you can cut a circle to glue the feathers onto, then glue that circle base onto to clip. It will be less messy/burn-y in the long run and easier to add and arrange a lot more stuff onto your clips. Bonus anchoring tip, if you cut an extra circle and put that on the inside of the clip, so that the top of the clip is sandwiched between two circles, it's really sturdy.

One of the best things you will ever buy for millinery work is curved needles, they are a true blessing when it comes to the odd curves and planes of hats!
Better to have a done costume than none costume? Okay probably not short enough for a pin but I still like the sentiment. Maybe a t-shirt. :D Also thank you so much for that thread recommendation. I'll be keeping an eye out next time I buy thread.
I'm coming back to this video ages later because I just found an incredibly easy hack for those 1860s through 1890s hats that look like tiny mens trillbies with lots of decor: buy a child size hat. Also works for the 1940s. Don't know why I didnt think of it sooner

i'm friends with a few reenactors and the rule regarding hot glue and duct tape seems to be, 'if they had had it, they would surely have used it.' so you use what you need to use to do the thing.
Half circle needle would have seriously helped. But there is no shame in hot glue!
Seconded for a curved needle. They are especially useful for 3D projects that don't lay/sew flat.
Modern V can definitely wear hats too.
Hi, I know this is somewhat late in the history of this video, but anyway... As an experienced theoretical hat person, this is what to come to my mind.
I love it. For your next one you could try it with longer fluffies for the feathers. The longer, and thereby more fluff, the merrier in these eras, or do I have that one wrong? You could try to place one of the flowers more or less on the "glue spot", and thereby get it to look like you put much more time on the hat than anyone would know. You could also try to get the stone of the hatpin more or less on the decoration, at least when using the hat for the later era. I've seen a lot of fashion plates with giainormus hatpins in among the decorations adding to the ridiculeness of the hats (which I love by the way). You could even get another hat pin and crisscross them in the hair, so the hat stay on when it's windy. At least that's a concern of mine but I have very fine and slippery Scandinavian hair, so that might not be needed for you or other people.
Anyway, as I stated earlier, I love what you did in this video and I would wear that felt hat any or every day of the fall and winter season. All the other is just ideas to use or not, ass you and other reader feel like. Thank you for this video. I got some ideas from it that I'll have to experiment with sometime in the future. Yours, Ann
Late, I know, but if one wraps the "stems" of the feathers together with thread first, it will hold better and longer :) Stitching them on to a bit of fabric or leather works nicely too.

I'm all for finding a way to make things that work for you, whatever materials/tools/time/energy/skills someone has, no one histrocially was deliberately making work harder for themselves unless they had weighed the benefits to the outcome anyway.
Omg the struggle of hats and curls! I was never a hat person, but I've been trying to semi become one just for skin protection purposes. I'd love to add more historical hat styles into that, but so far my first attempt at reshaping one is....lacking. And I have no idea where I can get hat pins locally (not in the US or UK)
I don't understand the point of historically accurate for historical costuming. Is it not just a costume? As long as we all enjoy things do what you need to. Love the results.
have you tried using upholstery needles for sewing awkward angled areas ? I use them and while they take getting a bit used to, once you are they are lovely

i hate hats because i also have a lot of long hair and thus they fall off and/or get sweaty. i think what i need is super long hat pins but i cant find them anywhere. not even blanks that i can decorate

I HATE sewing bands on hats,!I like the other trimming stuff but I absolutely detest attaching a ribbon band and getting it to behave properly!
That was WAY too many stitches to attach a hat band. Two tacks to keep the ends connected, and one on the opposite side. That'll do.

I learned in school when you get hot glue on your fingers if you rub them together you dont burn yourself, or put them in your mouth but that's a bit gross
Also, hot glue guns come at different temperatures. The low temp ones are low temp enough that unless it's a big blob it doesn't burn too bad.
J0k394 Cool-heat glue guns took over long ago, fortunately. The one my Grandma had that she used for flower arranging 30 years ago was practically weapons grade in terms of causing horrible blisters from the tiniest bit of glue.
@@lynn858 I have a yearly task of making sure the peanuts a bunch of 8 year olds tied to a length of string don't come undone. It involves gluing what feels like every other peanut. Every year I think I should order myself thickish sillicon gloves/thimbles for next year but I keep forgetting 🤣 this may be the year I remember

I can't stand hot glue... when I find it on hat I end up deconstructing the hat unless I give it away.
