I was in Wilgenhof in the 80s. Pretty awful experience for a first year student to say the least. What I found disappointing then is that the older students, when asked why they bullied the first year students, the response was “they did it to us, so we do that to them’. Couldn’t believe it is still happening today.

In the seventies their was a clandestine male grouping, made up of a dozen or so of the most 'catchy', most popular young men on campus, who named themselves the 'Heartbreak Club'. Their 'game' was to compete among themselves to see who could 'feit' the prettiest first years into falling in love with them, and then to break their hearts by denying their very existence, immediately after they had 'deflowered' them. There are stories of many a life being destroyed because of it, but I believe the university eventually got their hand on it, after they had no option...

I find this actually quiet hypocritical, children are allowed to watch disney and so on, have internet access, what do you think they watch and are exposed to? This is the basis of all the actions in intiation practises, it's what guides the seniors.
Suggest censorship of content of movies, series, ect and then suddenly everybody is "up in arms", people ridiculed & demonized for even suggesting censorship.
Let's be honest and get real.

What do you think this kind of trauma does to a person's psyche? You don't need to bond with your fellow students through trauma. You will succeed or fail in your studies through your own individual efforts. Ditto for the rest of life. You don't need the kind of "guts" this supposedly gives you. You need faith in God. A kid who was at school with me died during one of these initiation practices when they made them drunk and dropped them off far outside Stellenbosch to force them to walk back. He got hit by a car. Rest in peace "Skom." Sadly I've met many preachers who protect this kind of rubbish, showing that even if you study theology, it does not make you an ethical or a good man. It's unacceptable and barbaric and most importantly, un-Christian.

I was in a prominent mens residence for 5 years. Experienced, witnessed and dished out initiation events.
For some old boys clubs there are even initiation for 3rd and 4th students, mostly to get to know the rules and names of old boys.
It fostered camaraderie, and sense of belonging amongst the men. Overall great results.
There was the 5% who disapproved, some became sluipers or left.
    Overall a net positive.

Let’s just make it explicitly clear that this takes place in some of Stellenbosch University’s MEN’s residences. It’s part of the MEN’s res culture and history. Not the ladies residences. Nobody seems to report on this detail, which matters. This kind of toxic initiation behavior is taking place at MEN’s residences. It’s the abhorrent treatment of first year MEN by that MEN’s residence’s senior MEN. Nobody reports that the ladies residences are the perfect role models of how you can welcome your new first years into a wonderful culture of respect, academic excellence, and social inclusion. The ladies residences seem to get it right without ever having to use these disgusting initiation tactics, because it’s crazy and completely unnecessary.

This is some "Lord of the Flies" shit. People in authority have a responsibility to see to it that such evil is not perpetuated. There were similar practices in the hostel at Paarl Gymnasium High School. Giving young children over into the hands of other older kids to be abused like this is un-Christian. Parents and those running the institutions should know better than to allow such evil to continue. My orientation in Germany at Tubingen University consisted of the older students taking us through the town, showing us the best and most beautiful spots, and showing us the best places to drink delicious German beers. These barbaric Pagan practices should be stopped.
