Now this is a Raul Lara coached team I remember during the years he coached Long Beach Poly to CIF championships: keep running the ball first to keep the opposing defense honest at all costs and wear them out. Play stingy defense. Make no mistakes/turnovers. keep it simple.
@@RyanLBC it certainly helps that he had Kareem Kelly, Hershel Dennis, Herman Ho-Ching, Chris Lewis, Marcedes Lewis, Winston Justice and dudes like that year in and year out, let's not forget Darnell Bing and Darrel Redeaux. Those LB Poly teams used to be ridiculously loaded.
@ I played on the 96-97 teams. There’s no doubt we had all the talent but his philosophy stood out the most to me was when he took a team that started 1-3 only to win the pac 5 cif chip with much much less talent to win against mater dei in 2016. Also remember when we had Kareem Kelly and qb’s like Chris Lewis the offense was different in those times because of head coach Jerry Jaso. Lara had to transition from Jaso‘s more open west coast offense to what you see now. I wasn’t a fan of the changing of the offense in that time but I respect his utter commitment to a run first offense.
@@RyanLBC I remember a handful of years ago they beat Josh Rosen and SJB in the CIF playoffs with a run heavy offense, there were two RB's I think it was a black dude and a latin kid. If I remember correctly the QB was named Tai Teiderman or something like that. The QB was definitely a game manager and it was his job to hit a pass or two per quarter and just hand the ball off and let the RB's pound the rock.
@ I almost totally forgot about that game I remember watching it on fox sports west. It was these years when you notice the huge shift of athletes from Long Beach and Lakewood going over to bosco and mater dei and coach lara’s philosophy of football standing out more. He always had a two backs. I believe that year was Gerard wicks and the second back was actually a Polynesian kid Manusamoa Lu’uga. They wore teams down that year. Laras teams always seemed to start off slow due to his criticized simplistic game plan back in the day. But I think he needed to do that due to the gradual fall off on athletes he’s had to deal with through the years especially losing out to kids going to private schools. If I remember correctly bosco got their revenge the next season in another physical game
Great coverage. Great game to watch. Next time please cover the post game footage, especially on big games like this. Maybe get some interviews in? Great footage tho, LSM

Mater Dei's game plan worked. Come after the freshman QB. He looked every bit like a deer caught in the headlights. You can't win when your Quarterback gives up 31 points in the first half. Hopefully he can mature from this.
Yes. This was unquestionably the absolute WORST Bosco has played in the 12 years I have been watching their games. Just terrible. They wouldn't have beat the Little Sisters of the Poor tonight. MD capitalized on every single turnover (MANY!) that Bosco gave them. Koa threw THREE interceptions, and was throwing just terribly. He looked every bit like a freshman, and threw like one too. He's been inconsistent lately, but tonight he was consistently terrible. Threw it to defenders when he wasn't overthrowing his receivers. O-line got beat on every single play during the first half. MD, OTOH, showed up to PLAY. That's for sure. And play they did.
@@terencedoherty3049Mater Dei almost had that Michael Jordan "I took it personally" attitude. I didn't expect much of a game just because of how SJB has played lately, but I never expected a Corona Centennial type of score.
@@Rockyinlp Their defense read the freshman like a book even on that look off pick 6. Some SJB parent must've been talking smack about the young QB picking them apart and the defense indeed, took it personally.

Never thought I'd see the day MD had a running clock against SJB. That SJB rookie QB got merc'd.

True, and they were home grown.
Yeah its a wrap for everybody this year. The defense is just too much to overcome.
Superb tackling throughout the game by Mater Dei.

A ton of self inflicted wounds by SJB. It turned ugly real fast. Wow
doesn't seem to matter what level anymore some DA is popping off when he finally does what he's suppose to but their still getting there butts kicked!
Not so easy to compete with MD when you're not stealing their signs.
