    For the "angle on a square" tip, even if you don't have a chart, you can use trigonometry (tangent of an angle is, by definition, opposite side divided by adjacent side)

      Rise over run is also a fraction aka a percentage, 50% is 45 degrees extra. More math but you won't need a calculator

    • @tom-840
      @tom-840 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was about to say the same thing. Rise/Run = slope = tan (angle). So many folks seem afraid of simple trig, but it's really pretty simple and quite useful.

  • @theeddorian
    @theeddorian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks. That half-lap tip is an especially good one.

  • @AlAllerton
    @AlAllerton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fav framing square calculation you can do on your phone calculator...
    tan(degrees)*run = rise
    Say you want a 22.5° angle on a framing square...
    tan(22.5)*12 = 4.97 inch rise on 12" inch run.
    Want 60°, it's...
    tan(60)*12 = 20.78 inches of rise on 12" inch run.
    tan(30)*12
    =6.92" inches of rise on 12" inch run is 30°
    Of course you can change the run or degrees and get any rise you want for any angle you want. Comes in handy though.

    The one about setting up for half-laps is a 10. I'm a half-lap joint addict, so it's perfect for me. I used to watch the great Norm Abrams with my dad years ago, and he would always say, "Norm always leaves out how long it took him to set up that tool so it would make a perfect cut. It's not that easy!" That setup tip makes it way easier.

    You can actually calculate the angle at the long side through the rise and length by arctan(rise/len), which every calculator is able to compute. Simple geometry and you dont have to rely on tables (which are not complete)

  • @jacobjonsson8335
    @jacobjonsson8335 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you lose your chart with the run/rise/angle relationship and have access to a smart phone you can calculate the angle with atan (rise divided by run), or if you want the rise for a run with a certain angle you can do run*tan(angle).

  • @asderven
    @asderven 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Finally my trig knowledge comes to play. That is a simple use of tan. Interestingly wood working relies quite a lot on trig for me. I find calculations more precise that way, takes out lot of the guess work for me.

    I saw this in one of the click bait life hack videos. (I hate that I even ever look at them but that's another story.) Drill through the center of a CD with the reflective side up, when the reflections of the bit and drill are all the same length you are perpendicular to the work. It works surprisingly well and easily.

He said, "I'm not as young as I used to be, so I had to slow it down, so if make a mistake, I don't ruin my blade, and I don't have to worry about over heating them. I tried to ask him, how he set up grinder, but he just kept talking.
