The government needs to reign in insane tuition being charged to physicians and dentists. The average dental school debt is $400+k and interest accrues from day 1. Even pausing interest while in school would save students $75k+.

That is not wanted. The tuition and interests are a whole industry, making super rich people even richer. I guess they hate this old lady for doing this trick. In Switzerland, students have to pay like 500-850 CHF per semester to study medicine, coming to a whooping 1000-2000 CHF per year !!! While in the US they charge the students 60k per year !

737 students this year, enough for 4000 students to receive tuition free, assuming a quarter of a mill in tuition. That's enough to be tuition free for the next 5ish years. I wonder what application/admission stats will come out in the next few years. Very competitive, no doubt.

It will create an additional 45 million dollars each month, and interest will compound. It will quickly grow, if their half smart it will last forever.

Imagine the positive follow-on effects on humanity of this one act of kindness. Imagine how many students who would have dropped out due to finances, now won't. How many students, who otherwise would never go, now can. Imagine the research they will do in the coming decades, the discoveries they'll make, the people they will heal and inspire. Our filthy-rich could easily make higher education "free" for most in this country without using a single tax dollar. We should start asking them why they don't at every board meeting; just start putting on the pressure. Titans of industry are very competitive; if one does it the others will follow so as not to look like they've been beaten. Use their egos to get what WE want for a change.

But if they start by investing the billion into a trust and invest it the returns alone should be able to fund students indefinitely. Basically will make that school the first tuition free medical school in the world. Which I think isn't a bad idea, it will give people who don't come from money to have the equal chance at a medical career.

The plans for next year which is junior year and senior year do give me anxiety and makes me feel anxious knowing I really do need to make smart decisions. But I believe in myself knowing that wherever my education is, that I’ll have an amazing outcome towards my school, people I’ve met, and much more. I just really need to work at it. Not only education but communication wise too, it’s something I’d really love to improve on and it isn’t easy at times but I believe in myself, I want to work hard to get there.

I hope she put stipulations on her donation like the school can't raise price of tuition, or more sly things like students HAVE to live in college dorms or buy particular books that the college directly profits from. Large donations like this are easily corrupted because there's so much money that you can easily launder other expenses.

I wonder if that $200k cost they quote is just the cost for the school or if it includes living expenses. If it's just the cost of tuition a scary thought is a billion only pays for about 20 years at those rates, and if rates increase (which they absolutely will) probably closer to 14 years.

Wow this has tremendous impact! Saving so much debt from the students and helping promote more doctors for the community! And man those doctors coming out of this school will have it much easier since they won’t have all that student debt to pay off after school. This is an amazing deed and there needs to be more like this!! Donations are like this are so beneficial to the community

Good for her, she has made a difference not just to the medical pupils, but also the people that they will save. So this lovely lady has saved people from debt, but also helped save other people's life's. However, as far as I am concerned, it does not matter what Country you are in. If you are taking medical or other trades that benefit humanity, then you should get your education for free. If you go to school to study drama as an example, then you should pay through the nose for that waste of time. Sadly, in the UK we used to have free education, but they are trying to get our Country like the united states and paying for everything, or being homeless.

Providing the means to become educated is a very noble thing. I hope this leads the America having better healthcare in the future with doctors who aren’t incentivized to prescribe drugs that don’t fix anything.
