      Didn't he have a beat down already in US open 2011 against Nadal, when the score was 62 61 63? The 1st winner by Roddick was in the 3rd set, which was ridiculous.

      @@kucingmeowcanteq7994 I think the point was, Roddick knew at 2012 that he'll probably never beat the Big 3 again
      even if he does, it will be through extremely high risk tennis (which is unnatural for him) and he would have to do it for at least 2 matches in the same tournament just to have a chance to win a big title again
      an almost impossible task for Roddick by then end of 2012

      Bill Patrick Jones Yes. Roddick had the serve, but Novak had the all-around. Novak is amazing. I wish (like everyone else that Novak was around for the Federer/Nadal/Roddick era. But I still think Federer would’ve got them all. His entire game was fearsome. Of course, being American, I always cheered for Roddick. But when somebody is better, they’re just better. watching this match, you really get the sense that Novak believes that he can win most of the rallies once he neutralizes Roddick's serve because in almost every extended rally, Roddick either gets impatient and goes for too much too soon making an unforced error, or does a chip and charge to the net and gets passed. granted this was toward the end of roddick's playing career but without the same firepower on his serve and forehand that he had in his younger years, i felt like weaknesses in the rest of his game became more apparent in 2010-2012

    • @bonzwah1
      @bonzwah1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      yeah, when he was younger he really went after the forehand. much flatter, much more powerful...but much more error prone. I believe that he and his coaching staff at some point decided that it was worth it to develop a more loopy forehand to cut down on unforced errors...and against people outside the top 10 it was pretty successful, which is why roddick remained inside the top 10 for the vast majority of his career. but the price was that he would basically never win any rallies whatsoever against anyone in the top 10. It basically meant he couldn't ever beat top 10 players.
      In a world where people only care about how many grand slams you've won when you retire, I guess roddick probably should never have switched his forehand, as high risk/high reward makes sense. He likely would have won another grandslam or two, but he also would have likely had a much lower average ATP ranking throughout the years.

    • @mitchaelhollingsworth1698
      @mitchaelhollingsworth1698 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@bonzwah1 forehand aside, his backhand doesn't have good technique, this unreliability and tendancy to run around backhands gives him worse positioning which is exposed when you're older and less mobile. i also think he makes poor choices in shot selection, but he was a top ten fixture for near a decade who carried american men's tennis after agassi and sampras retired which isn't nothing. plus he seems like a nice, pretty genuine, funny guy if you've ever heard his commentary or seen him do press.

    This is such a slow grass court. Djokovic is a great defensive player, but the slowing down of the courts(heavier balls too) since 2005 made it possible for Djokovic to become this unbreakable concrete wall. Roddick was trained to excel at a completely different game. When the game suddenly changed he could logically not adapt, because the type of playing required was totally opposite from his own.

  • @zeddeka
    @zeddeka 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Roddick just had too many holes in his game to compete against prime Djokovic, Federer and Nadal consistently. He was very one dimensional and also wasn't the greatest with mental strength (had a tendency to be fairly manic on court, to rush through points and not stop and compose himself or think about what was going wrong). In short, he was a bit of a lumberjack. When he couldn't overpower someone, he didn't have much else.

    • @venize3050
      @venize3050 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t agree much with this take. Roddick’s kryptonite was Federer. He didn’t do terrible against Nadal and Djokovic.
      His only issue was his tennis, too aggressive and too taxing on the body. I believe if he had managed to tweak a few things on his game in order to become more efficient with his body he would have managed to stay a little longer on the top, although he had already been at the top of the tour for the better part of a decade.

      Roddick had real power early in his career. You can watch the 03 US open 04 Wimbledon final and he CRUSHED the forehand. Made errors sure, but he had some weapons. After Federer got in his head, he switched to this weird counter puncher and topspin player that got no power or depth on his shots. Unfortunately, he never got the confidence or coaching to give it a try again and his game suffered.

    Roddick has one of the worst footwork on tour, but one of the best server though!

    Andy is only good at serving nothing else. Doesnt have a game plan. Hes all over the court. Inconsistant player. Doesnt play smart. Too much temper.

      He completely ruined his game when he got rid of brad gilbert and tried to become a player he just wasn’t. His serve and forehand was a killer combo. Sometime after Gilbert he started to just roll his forehand into the court. Would probably have helped of he wore shirts that fit him too.

      Red Mosquito never made sense how he got rid of Gilbert just because he had a coupe months of poorer results. Still top 5-10 in the world when he got rid of him

    I don't think Roddick took PEDs whereas Novak might have. If that's true, then Roddick is better
