Carnage is by far one of my favorite character'S I remember the saga game that was released. On the commercial is said let's paint the town red. I never liked Eddie's mid-90s golden blond mullet. Just 'cause Superman had an mullet in the early 90s, that doesn't mean that every other comic book characters must also have an mullet.
Maximum Carnage likes to present Cassidy as the ultimate example of an irresponsible individual who follows the dark impulses of his mind in order to bring about a kind of savage animalistic anarchy. But there's a significant flaw with the psychology of this analysis, at least taken at face value. Because while it does seem to acknowledge that people have an inner desire to reject the social order, it doesn't explore why -- simply dismissing Carnage as insane despite also acknowledging early on that all people possess the capacity to be like Carnage. What really makes imagining ourselves as serial criminals enjoyable -- and this as actually quite an optimistic thought as I will show you -- is not in casting off the rules and being lawless, but specifically in breaking the rules. In other words, Cassidy doesn't want a world without rules because then there's be nothing for him to rebel against. You can't destroy a society that doesn't exist or kill a person who's already dead. What we call an anarchist cannot exist without some form of government for him to oppose. What we call a nihilist is really just some form of existentialist who gets a kick out of watching ideologies burn -- but he doesn't want there to be no ideologies because then there would be no fuel for the fire. Therefore, Carnage must necessarily be the expression of a being that is, on some level, civilized. Otherwise the internal conflict that gives rise to his behavior and desire to rebel wouldn't exist. A one-sided person who only wants to destroy doesn't make any sense. Even real life serial killers are really otherwise reasonable people who, through some circumstance or another, have been driven to reject the social order. And this further proves he is, symbolically, all of a piece with Spiderman. Fairly late in the comic, Spiderman contemplates that he has difficulty imagining a reality that has Venom but not Carnage and vice versa, in the same why that he compared the Green Goblin to his own dark side. I almost laughed when I saw this because it was a textbook case of projection -- Spiderman even admits that Carnage represents an inversion of his ideals. I propose that what really happened is that the metaphor of Spiderman's dark half died in the form of the Green Goblin I.E was repressed, and then resurged as Carnage. Venom is more analogous to Spiderman's shadow complex; a discomforting, ruthless, but also powerful and detached part of his mind that he needs in order to have some toughness about him -- the grit to keep at his ideals and not give up. The more gentle aspects of Peter's personality want him to protect others, protect his own health, and be with Mary Jane. I propose it s the part of his mind analogous to Venom that makes him stand up against crime as Spiderman in spite of the separation, the danger, and the damage it does to his family. The comic wants to assert that Venom is just a slightly less terrible psychopath than Carnage, but the role he plays in Carnage's defeat suggests otherwise. The dark side of the mind, even from the point of view of the civilized world, is a beneficial and necessary part of life. (Just as I think even Carnage himself is, though we may agree to disagree on that one.) -- In conclusion, the comic seems to operate on the assumption that if the social order were to collapse, people would "revert" to being like Carnage, but as we've explored, that doesn't add up. The reason we like breaking rules is because they violate our innate nature as human being and restrict the full potentiality of our personalities. If there were no rules, there would nothing for our minds to rebel against or grow violent at. We would be like animals, perhaps -- but not monsters. Not vicious killers who do it for the joy of watching pain in others. Hunters and savages, but not murderers. One way or the other, it takes a society to produce a monster. Call them the shadows of civilized people, if you like. So on the bright side, we need not take any desire to break the rules that creeps up on us as premonitions to our own psychic decay, but simply a natural and inevitable consequence of having rules to follow in the first place. So in their own weird way, our self contradictions are a sign that we are well-adjusted; the only way to be without these contradictions is to be without consciousness. -- it actually proves that we're doing things right!
