If you want to learn more, you can listen to Dr Mathias Nordvig's podcast called Nordic Mythology Podcast. He hosts it along with Daniel Farrand, owner of an English business called Horns of Odin which sells customizable drinking horns, among other things. They feature a lot of academics, but also participants in Scandinavian culture. They even have an episode with Alexander Ludwig, the actor who played Bjorn in Vikings. They also have episodes with just the two of them where they take deep dives into the mythology; in fact, most of the initial episodes are like that. Hope you don't mind my recommendation!

The MCU has nothing to do with Ragnarok. Ragnarok isn't about stopping some villain who throws spikes at everyone. It's about determinism and vengeance. Loki and his monstrous children brings on the vengeance to the world of Aesir for how they were treated by them. They don't care about conquest. They know they will die, but do so anyway because it's their destiny.

They either hate it or don't care for it. MCU's Thor, much like most of Norse-related characters in the MCU, is a bad Americanized joke of their culture. People like Waititi on a mental level can't get the tone that would fit Thor. Thor movies should be moody, rainy, full of pathos and epic battles.

    • @Makkufurai

If I might add my perspective as a Norwegian; I don't really mind at all as I don't consider the Thor portrayed by Marvel to be in any way accurate (or even trying to be) a depiction of the Thor of Norse mythology. There are in Scandinavia today exceedingly few who actually worship these gods, but a lot of people respect the myths as a part of culture (including myself). However I would personally find it silly to get all worked up about accuracy in movies, based on comic books made for entertainment, created half a century ago (in America) :P.
They are after all not really working towards accuracy in the same way as say 'Vikings' is. When it comes to shows/movies like that, I would care more.

The hammer was also very indestructible. Since the two brothers won, Loki would have to give up his own head had he not one trick up his sleeve: they can cut off his head, but not his neck. I think Stan Lee admitted in "Origins of Marvel Comics" that he and Jack Kirby really didn't know much about Norse mythology when they created their comic book Thor. They used some of what they remembered, but just made up a whole bunch of stuff (which is why Thor and Sif have the wrong hair color, for instance). What's also left out of this video is that the movie Thor has no resemblance to the character Stan and Jack created, but is based on the famous Walter Simonson run on "Thor" in the 80's, where he injected Norse mythology back into Marvel's Asgard and completely revised Thor's character (punting his secret identity of lame Dr. Donald Blake, for starters). That Simonson run is legendary for good reason, and one of the few cases in comics where the re-vision fully and completely replaced the original. But Dr. Nordvig here is a Norse mythology expert, not a comic book fan, so there's no reason why he would have known about that Simonson run. I think he'd dig it, though.

Enjoyed this immensely. Let's not forget that in the MCU universe Asgard and it's citizens are the "gods" as they actually are. These gods according to MCU Odin "fell into mans myths and legends" hence mans stories of the Norse pantheon. It's a flip of sorts. With us the mythology came first and the MCU stories much later. With MCU the gods came first and our mythology came after. Hope I explained that right.

In Norse mythology there's no such thing as only the worthy can wield mjolnir. In the myths it's simply stated that Thor is thenonly one who's powerful enough to wield the hammer properly. There even is a story where the giants stole Thor's hammer but that wouldn't be possible in the MCU because only the worthy can lift Thor's hammer in the MCU.
Also in the myths heimdall isn't black.

Mjolnir was actually commissioned by loki
Odin's spear Gungnir will never miss and any oath sworn upon it will never be broken
Loki once turned into a horse (if you are very very brave or foolish look up why)
Thor once had to dress up as a bride (I really wish we got something like that in Marvel)
In marvel Fenris wolf seems to be Hella's pet in mythology he is actually her brother Fenrir

    • @jermainekngdom3154

Fenris and Fenrir are the same being. That's why alot what he say is wrong. Norse has many contradicting stories. Like Loki and Odin are the same person. Odin used to be a trickster God who was called the walker before becoming king.
Thor hammer have various descriptions not all small like marvel.
Loki was once female. He once gave birth as a female wolf.
Loki was a fire giant. He has different color eyes apparently.
      Thor mother is Gaia.
He isn't wrong. And isn't not wrong. Their are many different interpretations. Thor is blond and red headed.
Hela name is Hela and is a place in hel.

The similarities are not that crazy when you consider that all Indoeuropean mythologies have a common root.
Etymology still proves it: Latin deus, Greek Zeus, Old High German Ziu is the same word. Beside their common root, they developed for centuries independent of each other, so this word has not the same meaning in the different languages anymore. In Latin, deus is the general term for any god, Greek Zeus is the main god while germanic Ziu/Tyr is the god of war.

Mythologies don't really go for the concept of sexuality nor do they care at all. Making a big deal out of it was more recent that's why Greek gods like Zeus or Dionysus are known to sleep with anyone no matter what gender or species they are. Loki had a wife but I doubt there was any concept of sexuality written for him.

Most people don't realize it but there are a LOT more accurate representations of Thor out there in pop culture(AND in comics and even DC Comics has their own version of Thor) in various different mediums but the Marvel version is just the most popular version of Thor in pop culture. That's why when I write some comics that I have planned for my version of Thor,I'm not even going to call them ''Thor'',just to avoid any kind of association or confusion with Marvel's version of Thor.
God Of War is very accurate to Norse myth and legend.
