Novels tend to be bleak, albeit beautifully written. I was hoping that the supernatural element would brighten up the story but it just added to the melancholy. I’d recommend it to people who love to explore their darker sides. As I have a pretty good grip on my dark side, the long lead up to the explosion of female rage at the end was cathartic, however, I would rather seek out lighter fare than look for more of this author’s work. That said, I don’t regret sticking around to the end, to see all of the threads tied up neatly.
I know right it’s sad, it’s so common now, people are going to look back on our literature to see neglect & abuse a major theme, there’s so much hate/violence for our time 😞
Every book has some sort of dissonance as it's core theme. Otherwise, a story isn't really happening. Theres always an enemy or social issue. Sure, there are some books that don't really have an antagonist. I'd recommend Becky Chambers works for that. But apart from some authors, there's always been violence and social issues at the heart of novels. Unless you read just plain romance.
Wow what a wonderful surprise both the quality of the book & the narration.
Thank you for this beautiful gift 🕯️🙏

Why are almost all books these days full of emotional and physical abuse? It's so disheartening.

Probably because it's so common in real life. Most women experience some type of abuse during their lifespan.
Meh....
