  • Pula is the largest city on the western coast of the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia. The harbour of Pula is well protected from the sea, making it an ideal port.
Pula was conquered by the Romans in 177 BC, starting a period of romanization. After the fall of the Roman Empire in 476, the city was successively under Venetian, Napoleonic and Austrian rule. Under Austrian rule, Pula regained prosperity. Its large natural harbour became Austria's main naval base and a major shipbuilding centre. Following the collapse of Austria-Hungary in 1918, Pula and the whole of Istria went to Italy. After WWII, Pula became part of Yugoslavia and then Croatia following its independence in 1991.
The major landmark of Pula is the Amphitheatre, which was once the site of gladiator fights. It was built in the 1AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, at around the same time as the magnificent Colosseum in Rome. The ground plan of the Amphitheatre is oval, the longer axis measuring about 130m and the shorter one about 100m. Gladiator fights took place in the central flat ring called the arena, while the spectators could sit on the stone tiers or stand in the gallery. It is believed that the Amphitheatre could seat about 20,000 spectators. Local limestone was used for its construction. Today, it is the venue for many different events - Pula Film Festival, various concerts, opera, ballet, sports competitions and its capacity has been reduced to about 5,000 spectators. During the summer months, the Arena hosts gladiator fights as part of the historical and entertainment spectacle called ‘Spectacvla Antiqva’.
