Even as a $1 patron for years, Rudy has been nothing be kind and courteous to me. He really is the sweetest guy around. He plays up being a scumb bag but that's actually the furthest from the truth. In the conversations I've had with him he's been straightforward with me. I asked him about doing a box opening to promote this channel. And he straight up said we could but they don't usually work. He could have just taken our money and done the video, but he was honest with us and told us the truth. The scumbag Rudy thing really is an honest to God act. And it's brilliant. But that's what's brilliant about this scheme. Even if he sold these cards for a million each, it has no effect on the gameplay whatsoever. His promo is useless as a game-piece other than being able to flex with a bunch of perfect graded unplayable cards as a meme deck. It just puts money into his pocket while getting some extra attention on the game. If this is where WOTC had taken their secret lair and universe beyond cards, no one would mind. Alternate collectible cards with no game use whatsoever is fine. Give the people who want to spend cash on something pretty to put on their wall and in their binder. Its wild that videos like this get made after something becomes successful. Rudy has been a millionaire lol doing 1.5 every weekend haha Seriously though, Rudy believed in this game in 2019. He took a chance, put his own money at risk when many people did not including myself when he offered 1st edition Welcome to Wrath boxes for like $70 to his Patrons. Call him whatever you want but as a long time Patron the dude is genuine. At the end of the day, he is a nerd that came from a modest background, followed his dreams, built a business model out of it and is now sharing that dream with the public and anyone who took a chance with him is doing VERY WELL believe me! The American dream is the belief that anyone, regardless of where they were born or what class they were born into, can attain THEIR OWN VERSION of success in a society in which upward mobility is possible for everyone and there's NOTHING CRINGE about that.

It's unfair and dishonest to point to first-edition, cold foil cards with high price points and declare "it's just for investors" when a cheap version of the same card exists in unlimited. Yeah but FAB is largely immune to a lot of the bullshit of MTG. Since there is a reprint of demand version of every set you can't price people out of cards. I'm a Patron of Rudy's and have been for years. I'm an MTG guy and have never purchased any FaB product. My opinion as far as the Gemkeeper promo, it is what it is. You don't have to buy if you don't want to. Not gonna lie though, if I was a SUPER WHALE, I probably would've bought one or 2 just for fun. He's doing updates on the value, and has already done a video on how they sold during the 24hr window. It was a HUGE bell curve. Apparently a lot of FaB whales were working together to see how many would sell and based their decisions on that. Most sold within the first hour, then about 1 an hour for the next 22 hours, and a HUGE uptick in the last hour of the sale. He didn't release updates on sold stock during those 24 hours, the only way to tell if it had been sold out is if you tried to purchase one and it was unavailable. But that never happened. He ended up selling about 1350, leaving about 200 left to burn. If I've learned anything in the last year, ANY product, single card or box that he gives a nod or a thumbs up to SKYROCKETS in price as soon as the video releases. So if there's any cards you want or need that you think have a probability of making it into one of his videos, BUY NOW AND DON'T WAIT. He has a dangerously high impact and influence on the MTG market, which is good and bad. I signed up to be a Patron years back because I really enjoyed his videos. But now, as of about 1.5 years ago, he stopped accepting patrons, so whoever was in was in, and only new patrons could get in if someone dropped out. I just wanted to support the guy and get cheap Standard boxes, but now it's like being in an exclusive club. He gets exclusive FaB and Metazoo product, and investors that can't get in are foaming at the mouth to get a patreon spot to have the access. If it were possible, I could probably sell my Patron spot for hundreds of dollars if not more. It's become insane. But I still like the guy and still support him, despite him not needing any help at all lol.

Honestly, the biggest thing regarding the FAB "It's a scam" thing that makes me laugh is that the cards being sold here aren't playable, as you pointed out. In contrast, magic has nonsense like the fetchland secret lair, or the reserve list in general, locking stables like the original duals away, restricting older formats. Whenever someone talks about the super crazy high prices in flesh and blood, I can't help but think of the cost of a playset of fetches even just a year ago, or the price of getting into legacy. Honestly, my experience with Flesh and Blood has been that it's generally fun, this seems like just a fun way of LSS giving Rudy a return on his investment in them, in a fun and relatively unique way. Maybe not the best move, but it's an interesting one, and does get more eyes on the game.

This was already done to a certain extent by a game from the early beginnings of the CCG craze. Galactic Empires developed the bug for promo card craziness. Originally intended to be an novel concept for a business card soon turned into a way to generate profit for the company. The buyers of these cards as they would of course sell them. And throw rich kid syndrome into the game mainly because these cards were legal to use in the game. Players of the game at the time saw this and complained, and it forced them to create an article in their house organ magazine to essentially defend the practice by what seemed like a "suck it up, buttercup" attitude. Obviously Galactic Empires is no longer, whether because of this, probably not - but who knows.

I think most of that is BS, honestly, but if Rudy's card is out there as a rare collectible so be sought after, wouldn't it help drive those kind of people who invest in a game to see returns on it? And in that case, it might add to the longevity of the game itself.

  • @agentbilly1

You forgot to mention that Rudy got this card because he believed in the game before it was popular. He could have sold it at the start for $20 or $50 a card back in 2019 when fab was nothing. But he believed in the game and held onto it. Now that it took off, he is able to offer this for way more money. Every single person had the same opportunity when welcome to wrath came out. If you believed in the game in 2019 you could have not boxes for $70, and sell them for $6000+. That is 100x your money. So yea he made 1.5million, but he could have easily lost a bunch too if fab never took off. As Rudy says, his biggest fear is never taking chances. It is easy to cry about others making money when they are the ones taking chances and people sit around doing nothing.

It's definitely _an_ aspect, but it's not the only one. Especially when it comes to non-essential game pieces, or even just non-playable promo items like this.
The problem is people see FAB's first-edition card and box prices and decide it's only for investors, despite unlimited versions of the same products existing for cheap. MTG has its issues with card economy, but it would be unfair to call the game unplayable just because an Alpha print of Shivan Dragon is like $2000 or whatever. I think that can be a win win situation. Rudy using drama as an asset makes a lot of sense if you buy his narrative of retiring from internet soon and that kind of promotion would cost FnB some money. Looking at the right angle, Rudy has no risk on this and FaB is making a gamble. If this was Rudy's idea, it was a good one and he would have to be stupid for not taking it. He wasn't doing anything illegal and on that scenario, a lot of people can and should take the million.
If this blows up in the face of FaB makers, they had it coming for trying something cheap like that (appealing to internet's never ending thirst for drama). If this makes them a lot of money, good for them.
People getting mad at things that aren't anywhere they control is kinda stupid. Play the game or drop the game, and that's it. The extreme: voice your concerns to your legislator. Rudy isn't a candidate, we aren't voting on him for anything. All we can do is moving on while hoping game companies stop doing stupid shit (reserved list, promo of a promo of a promo, etc.) - playing their games or not.
For all purposes, feeding the drama/internet bs is the new "feed the troll". Don't agree with it? Don't like it? Stop talking about it. Don't recommend Rudy's video to all your friends so they can see how ridiculous it is - that was made Rudy famous and, again, kudos to him for reading the room.
Tl,dr: Stop giving attention the stuff you don't like/you want to see gone. Hate Rudy? Well, he is relevant because people that hate him engaged his content and advertised it in their social circles. You people are the ones that make Rudy rich(er), not us, the people that watch him for entertainment before moving on with our lives.

That is results oriented thinking, and using personal experiences over data.
That's like someone saying "I've never even heard of Rudy until Vince's video, they couldn't have had much of an impact..." or "The women at my workplace get paid the same, the gender pay gap must be a myth."
      And the statement isn't false.
They have gone straight to Rudy with this promotion. This is the first promotion of this kind and they have skipped over smaller content creators who have supported them and built them up for the first two years of the game.
Yes, Flesh and Blood have been doing small bits to support smaller creators, but they've been doing the same small bits of support for larger creators. So they've still skipped over the small ones with this large promotion.

I suppose my big thought is just, I'm not exactly interested in buying into a game that is telegraphing they care more about collectors and speculators than players, I already have enough with magic, so with this game being so new and aiming in this direction, making these kinds of gestures, all it does is tell me to expect worse in the future, even if this particular piece isn't anywhere playable. If they keep this up, eventually they will have their own mana vault, their own nexus of fate, and I don't think I want to be there for it

I used to hate the exclusivity of mtg cards. Just because I had no money, why couldn’t I have nice things. As I recently bought a strixhaven foil Japanese alt art demonic tutor, I guess I’ve become more flexible on it, but I still feel there is a big difference between what should be a piece of cardboard, with other exclusive pieces of art, or like a god damn Ferrari.
Having said that, what really gets me, what I absolutely cannot abide by, is the fomo bullshit. I’ll buy an item for twice the price if I can save up and buy it later, but the get it now and it’s never going to be reprinted is a scummy practice of the highest order. Which is why I’ve never bought a secret lair, and probably never will. If secret lairs were available all year round, but where print to order, that would be perfect, instead of the artificial scarcity that wotc employ.
This story is no different. Haven’t played fab, sure it’s great, hearing about this doesn’t make me want to play it any more or less, but it certainly loses some respect.

I think optics do matter, and I don't think this is the best look for FAB. I don't mind Rudy making money or stiring the pot, but yeah it really does not help the the perception that much of the games value is built on speculation. It's a fun game and this probably won't have any material effect on many save for Rudy making his money but I also can't imagine people looking back on this and thinking yeah that was good for the game.

I get that people don't like the investing world getting into their cardboard hobby, but those people are living in the past. Conversely, those people probably like having the ability to sell their card collections for lots of money, and you can't have it both ways. It's not Rudy's responsibility to pander to people who are badmouthing him because they're unhappy. We shouldn't be attacking Rudy over Flesh and Blood when he's the reason it got popular. We should be criticizing the people who keep saying Flesh and Blood is a scam. They're the ones damaging the game. Flesh and Blood isn't a scam, their live event and all the attention the game is getting are proof of this. Rudy was likely the main reason the game got so much success in the first place, and if the company wants to reward him with promos, it's their right to. Showing loyalty despite 'mainstream' optics not favoring Rudy just makes me like the FaB company and developers even more. If Rudy wants to sell the promo cards to people, then that's also his right, and if his patrons want to take a risk on it, then it's their to assume that risk. Note that Rudy has been correct many times when predicting long-term market collectible trends. His actions suggest that at the very least he believes that the card will appreciate in value, especially after he engineered the spectacle of the sale, and then later him burning the rest and framing the ashes. I think the guy is heavily misunderstood, and a lot of the hatred of him has to do with the anger that people in the world feel right now because of the crushing cost of living, and the horrible way the rich get to play by different rules. They see Rudy as a part of that, which I don't really think is fair when he's offering products at a discount, buying collections for good money as a trusted buyer, and offering really good financial advice to people.

And if he has, I guess I just don't care.
I enjoy Rudy for the most part. He's pretty honest about how things work and his video on income inequality was amazing imo.
Of course he broke character and was serious (mostly) for that one.
He's basically selling a novelty that doesn't matter as far as the game is concerned. As you say the card is unplayable. It's an Un-Card.
I'd find it just as hard to get worked up if say WotC gave Prof an Un-Card of himself (assuming he wasn't blacklisted, but it works for the analogy) and he sold them to people.
At the end of the day, that's what this is.
