    whenever i try to harmonize my voice just matches pitch with whatever i’m trying to harmonize with and its so frustrating

    • @Hypekickerz
      @Hypekickerz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      peepee popoo what helps me is not trying to listen to the main singers melody but singing the song in a different note of the chord hes singing. So sorta like singing in a different (matching) pitch but sometimes a bit higher or lower than that because of majors/minors/7th etc. So I try only to focus on my voice singing the song and only sidewise look for it to match. Probably not a pro tip as I'm horrible at shower singing anyways most of the times this works out for me singing for myself haha

    This did not help me. How do I find harmony with no musical instruments while singing with a group. I try and end up singing octaves higher or lower.. never harmony. Why am I struggling to harmonize, I do not know. I am a rather strong lead singer.
    Tell us how to find harmony without jumping octaves, please.

    whenever im listening to a song i try to harmonize but my vocal chords have a different idea...i can never harmonize. when i try to i end up doing melody again
    edit a year later: y’all i didn’t even know i had this comment-
    after a year of practicing (because apparently i wrote this a year ago), today i can harmonize to ANY song i hear. i am a singer, my whole family is really good at singing and i’m pretty decent at it (i’m 13 years old right now) i sing in my church’s praise team and my team leader helped me out a lot, but i recommend to start with using the piano. i won’t explain the whole process, but what i did was i played the melody, then moved three notes up from the melody, which is the harmony. if that didn’t make sense i’m sorry you can try searching it up but the piano helped me a lot

    • @joew.4073
      @joew.4073 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well if you were trying to play a single note together with someone and you were slightly out of tune, (unless you're tone deaf) you would naturally correct to match the person you're singing with. It doesn't really matter how wide the gap between your pitch and the other pitch is, you will naturally pull yourself to match that pitch on some octave. It's simply human nature to resolve that difference.
      To that point, virtually-perfect pitch harmonic music is very difficult to make, especially when singing or playing a wind instrument.

      @Caprak at first, I watched a lot of tutorial videos on how to harmonize, then I realize it’s like a personal instinct, but those videos helped me somehow. When I joined the choir, our conductress gave us tips on how to harmonize, such as shadowing the melody *if it makes sense*, and when she teaches us she uses her keyboard to show us the right notes for harmonizing then it it became natural for me.

    That great, Saher. I've used this technique quite a bit. I've always thought of it this way: I look at the chord, find a pedal that is in the chord and creates the most 3rds and 6ths, and use that note. I'll try some root, 5th pedals the next time I need a harmony.

    All the best singers are great backing vocalists I.m.o 😃

    Thanks for this. I also wanted to disagree with you when you say, "We can't simply choose based on what sounds pleasant; we also need to be thinking about what function is appropriate". If we stuck to that kind of thinking, 1. we would not have many of the types of music which have departed from the then prevalent norm, and 2. we are not acknowledging the context of where harmony is at our historical moment in time.

    I just figured one out using a lot of pedals, "Crazy Words", by the California Ramblers (we're a Dixieland duo). I couldn't get a harmony I liked for the longest time. This is so easy. It really works pretty well for melodies that skip around a lot. Here's another trick if you have three guys. It's easy to make up a completely different melody over a set of changes completely independent of the melody. Have one guy sing the melody, one guy makeup a melody more or less above the actual melody and the 3rd guy make up another melody more or less below the the actual melody. You are are bound to always have a 3rd or 6th in there somewhere. This doesn't work very well for two voices.
