I took the challenge and it’s now been over 1 year since I used a credit card. I now define items as needs and wants much more before making a purchase. Many items end up back on the shelf at the store as a result.
About 2 years ago, I gave myself this challenge. I cut up my credit card and paid off the balance but kept my account open, thinking I'd restart using credit after 30 days. Well, that 30 days turned into 6 months which turned into 1 year that I was NOT using credit cards and doing strictly debt/cash transactions. At the year mark, I called the credit card company to close my account and found it HYSTERICAL that the guy still used the "but you're going to be missing out on all the free points/cash back you could be earning" logic after I told him 3 times that I was not using the account AT ALL. Life without credit is pretty cool -- as long as I stick to the budget. 😜😜😜
In South Africa we had a mini-series called the "One Rand family" and the "One Rand Man" (Rand is the South African currency). Anywho, your entire salary would be given to you in one rand coins and you would have to physically pay for everything. The coins where kept in many containers. The participents where shocked at the amount of overspending they had previously done. Using physical cash (although not ideal) can kerb your spending
I was thinking the other day about how much banks have lost because of what happened to Dave. Had they not changed policies and called in loans, Dave may never of have gone down the road of being debt free and teaching others to do the same. So thank you banks for helping Dave go down a different road and change the world.
I genuinely believe this is the GREATEST DAVE RAMSEY EPISODE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anne, George, and Dave.........THANK YOU. I am sharing this with my hubby. (You "may" have created a monster here.)
It took mie a while to understand why Dave is against CC not bc we’re not responsable to pay off full at the end of the month it’s because you expend less
No, Dave is against CC because apparently the majority of people have something called 'no self control'. Many do not realize they would have more to spend if they were out of debt.
@@jrus690 self control requires goals, plans, concrete whys. And they are always changing. Much easier to rely on a smart system that takes the pressure off of the constant self awareness that “self control “ requires.
pff i did this for years!!! never heard of a credit cards in my early 20s. i cashed my paychecks and took out what i needed, left the rest in an account fod check writing for bills. that was it! no plastic.
I felt this to my core. We previously paid off debt and have recently racked up another £3000, we realised this has got to stop so i have challenged myself with using cash only until the debt has gone. Grocery shopping today with a limited amount of cash really bothered me, it was so hard to think about every little thing i bought instead of swiping a card. I really hope it gets easier as the weeks go by!
I actually started Cash Envelopes but using prop money. I thought this was a better choice for me as I do not want to keep a lot of cash around the house. To my surprise, using that Prop money really works. Although I do not give it away at the store, I have to go home and take it out of the envelope. I find I think twice about spending that money.
She is so right. Go in and out in 10 minutes. I am spending less. I am doing the experiment too. It feels so good. No Dunkin or Starbucks. I closed 2 accounts (Store Cards) and I cut four cards. Four AMEX. I am enjoying it. The first time I swiped my debit card and took $10.00 because I had no cash in hand. It felt so wonderful. I have $30.00 in my purse untouched. My money, I don’t want to let it go. 😂
I gave all my credit cards to my husband! There is nothing in this world that would make me ask him to use it. So they shall keep collecting dust and i shall continue to pay them off.
I'll tell you what, Dave, when I had to hand over those Benjamins, it was like Whoopi Goldberg trying to donate money to charity in that movie scene in 'Ghost.' The cashier really had to pry it from my hands ( oДo)
I was working as a caregiver and was making good money along with my social security check, I didn't have any problem spending a few dollars here and there even though I was saving. Now that I'm not working and just have my social security check I'm almost afraid to spend money for food! Crazy how it goes! I don't want to break into my savings!
I use a credit card for security reasons (gas, internet, places I can’t see my debit card 100% of times ) not points, I was victim of debit card fraud once, that’s all it took. My monthly cc is accounted for before I get the bill because like a debit or check the charge is deducted from the account ( in my ledger)when it’s made. Never made a lot of money but I own a home with no mortgage, two cars less than 2 years old with no payment, retired with income far exceeding my expenses. A credit card hasn’t been the gloom and doom end of my life, I know what I need and what I can spend no matter how I choose to pay for it, it’s called being an adult.
Finally decided to cancel my American Express card. Have 1700 left,on it will pay that off within a couple weeks. The only Debt I would have left is my car payment rich unfortunately I got into prior to listening today but that would be my last non-cash payment. Which I am aiming to pay within two years I want to make two payments per month to speed. Glad I learned this at 26
Feeling the pain when spending is a big key. It's easy to feel it when you spend cash, some of us also feel it the same way when we live in our budget and bank account balance. It wouldn't matter if I spent cash instead of on credit cards, I still watch the money leave my account and feel the pain.
The other thing I do to control any possible overspending is turn off Overdraft Protection with my bank. It doesn’t work with automatic deductions but if I go to Walmart and try to buy something, it will decline if I don’t have the money to cover it. I would rather deal with the slight embarrassment of a decline in public then the bank hitting me with multiple overdraft fees
I remember when I was young and everyone used cash, you did "feel" it more, but many families had to take things away when they were short. I remember the cashier saying "what do you want to take away?". My mom had it to a science but it wasn't easy.
I mostly agree with cash only. It hurts more to let go of cash. But using a Lowe's card with 5-10% off and paying off each month actually saves me money.
Literally been trying this aswell not using my card that often but using the cash I do have laying around and trust me I've spent little to non this past month
So we bought vehicle cash. Budget for 42k max but as we looked that number felt high and the closer we got to buying the lower that price we wanted to spend. And I thought if we would of financed we would of easily bought a 50k 60k vehicle. We ended up spending 30k so in essence we saved 30k spending cash on something that loses us money
We used a cashier's check because that was the seller's preference (private sale). I read that it's best to not pay for a car in cash since drug dealers are the people suspected of having lots of cash. But good for you.
@@kdonor yeah - in this conversation, a check - especially a cashiers check which is prepaid - should be the same as cash. Just few retail places that actually take checks now.
