The surrealism involved in seeing such a tragedy would be so intense, and enduring, that I probably would continue to feel high on acid for several days after!
My friend Greg Q. and I arrived at Elliot Bay Books just in time for Mr. Carroll to begin his in-store reading promoting his (then) new book "The Book of the Nods". He opened with a short poem I still remember, " Sure, I've got a ? ( I can't remember what word he used for needle, hypo, rig, works, ) I use it to baste my tiny turkey". Huge laughs in the packed bookstore. We sat through his evening of select poems, prose pieces enraptured by his words, although it was obvious nearly everyone in the place was already familiar with nearly every word already. Still his grittiness, his brutal honesty and his jaded but still naive narratives cut us to ribbons like razors, rusted and dirty from the grime only found in the darkest corners of the inner city. We waited until after the book signings, polite chit chat and all, until the three of us ( plus a couple staffers) were all that remained. We approached the frail and unassuming redheaded bard and invited him to come with us to see Green River (featuring future members of Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone and Pearl Jam) play at the Vogue. Think I'll have that played when it's my day . My friends would understand. The irony wouldn't be lost believe me.. kicking little tune . Being Irish I get it.. ✌️
I know this song is from 1980 and most people today associate it with the Suicide Squad movie. But I always think of the 2004 Dawn of the Dead movie when I hear it.
I had 2 budz that I used to hang with and they’re both gone. One died as if he didn’t care, and the other (Travis Cooper) gave his life for a stranger. He was on his way home after work and he came across 4 young guys beating on a native. He hollered at them, and they turned their attention to Travis beating him to death. The first victim survived. A few years ago, I had a dream where I bumped into Travis in the busiest street that I have ever seen. He took off and I tried to follow him but there was so many people (and no cars or vehicles of any kind), but I seen him go into a building, I followed. The door was very thick and made of wood, it seemed odd and very old looking. It was very dark inside, I was trying to feel my way around when a bunch of lights came on at the far end of a huge room. I seen him on stage as he started playing music, it was very loud, but sounded perfect. Then I woke up
Astute observation! Jim Carroll played at Jazz Berry's in Rochester NY 1991, he was sitting on a stool in front of both restrooms checking people's IDs as they went in! Then he read for 45 min. Then our local Rock Gods The Earthlings backed Jim on 8 or 9 songs. Quite the stellar evening! Punk for sure! Very funny guy.
My cat just recently died, and I realized how relevant this song is getting as I get older. I had so many friends, family and acquaintances who died as time has gone one...
At 22 running wild With all my friends At the time Made a unsober claim Will never see 40 Live fast die young Leave a good looking Corpse What I thought at the Time was just a nother Stupid line Came the truth I ain't lieing Now alone at 44 I'm the only 1 Surviving
You'd think going into this song at first that it would be dark or depressing but then the balls-to-the-wall guitars kick in and then the lyrics themselves: more sad, poignant and absurdly funny than dark at all. RIP Jim - a fantastic creature of New York City in one of its best periods.

I like the part where Waller was spinning around in the chair
Teddy sniffing glue he was twelve years old
Fell from the roof on East Two-nine
Cathy was eleven when she pulled the plug

Bobby got leukemia, fourteen years old

Mary took a dry dive from a hotel room
Bobby hung himself from a cell in The Tombs
Judy jumped in front of a subway train
Eddie got slit in the jugular vein
And Eddie, I miss you more than all the others
And I salute you brother
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died

Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends, and they died
Herbie pushed Tony from the Boys' Club roof
Tony thought that his rage was just some goof
But Herbie sure gave Tony some, some bitchen proof

Brian got busted on a narco rap
He beat the rap by rattin' on some bikers

By the very same bikers

The Quake SF 1982ish, my first introduction to Jim Carroll Band.....
WHAT A MASTERPIECE. RIP MR.CARROLL.❤
Man all my friends have died but this song helps me celebrate their lives but cry inside simultaneously
😊
Hear, hear!!!
Still as amazing as when I first heard it more than forty years back. The guitar work is brilliant.
Then I woke up
favorite song for holloween play list for holloween partys
Musician, writer..Jim Carroll was pure punk.
This is a good bridge jumping song. I love it
"Peacemaker...What a joke"
“Who’s Milton”
I can be your friend milton
@AZURE we just talked about your name like 3 hours ago
What people think this is about: a talking shark.
What it's really about: kids dying in the ghetto.
If you grew up poor in NYC in the 70s and 80s this song describes your childhood.
The ATCO Records 45 rpm vinyl single Bubbled Under the Billboard Hot 100 Charts at No. 103 in late 1980.
Great punk rock song.
This is one of the most warped yet catchiest songs I have ever heard so far.
Haven't heard this song in long time. Good one.
Nice song, guys ❤
Love it
This is a great song so awesome that I play it at least 2x a year. In my head is another story, probably once a week
All of these years and I never knew that Jim Caroll and his band sang this song.
Fabulous
I don't have enough fingers on my hands for all family & friends who died, this song is the perfect homage to all of them, pure love
This is a dope song
My friend showed me this song on vinyl!!! Such a happy song. 😂

Live fast die young
Leave a good looking
Corpse
What I thought at the
Time was just a nother
Stupid line
Came the truth
I ain't lieing
Now alone at 44
I'm the only 1
Surviving
43 and the first time hearing this song absolutely love it
*Here because of Stevie P. 💋 thank you!
They should use this in the opening credits if they ever make a Suicide Squad TV series.
The opening credits looked like something out of a 90s-2000s Tv Series.
So 5 months later there is a kinda Suicide Squad show, and it has a dope intro. Not sure if I'd prefer this over Wigwam.
Hey, wasn't "The Peacemaker" out 9 months ago? So they did make a "Suicide Squad TV series lol! And its AWESOME!
He's not wrong
You'd think going into this song at first that it would be dark or depressing but then the balls-to-the-wall guitars kick in and then the lyrics themselves: more sad, poignant and absurdly funny than dark at all. RIP Jim - a fantastic creature of New York City in one of its best periods.
I love this song and the marvelous revenge of the little yellow bird
