    It’s really great that you’ve highlighted Chris’s genius in this song. Most of the modern digital files have pretty much EQ’d it out. Yes without bass?!? I can’t stand it!

    One of greatest Yes' mysteries revealed. 90% of today YesFans never saw Chris' fingers on fretboard playing this song live - not counting old lucky guys who went on Topographic Tour concerts.
    Very tricky bass figures here. Even on good audio, with good headphones, with my ear opened for smallest detail, very often i've lost the track with bass line on this song. It's not ussual Squire style. To me it always sounded more like Wetton. Once again, thank you Miguel for your brave and imaginative approach. Those aspects were something i truly adored in Yes and honestly, your work is one of the very few things, that keeps my love for Chris and YesMusic still living.

    • @lionelgibaudan3592
      @lionelgibaudan3592 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The same for me over the years about the bass line in this track... I tryied to guess some bits of the bass and today I hear the whole thing and I know that Miguel is doing it with perfection.... I know how he is a perfectionnist, I trust him...

    • @ArtB414
      @ArtB414 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lionelgibaudan3592 looks like we're on the same spot:-)
      It took me years of expertise how to sort out and put togheter the bass notes from 11:14 to 12:14 and i always failed. Now i can see how things really are. It sounds like a half-free form/half-well organised clever trick.

    • @miguelbass
      @miguelbass  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you Art and Lionel! One of the big challenges was exactly to detect patterns that bring coherence to the idealization of the bassline. Of course we cannot be always 100% sure but that preliminary work, helped me to identify some of those patterns, which may indicate the intentions of Chris, and, to me at least, make sense within the song's structure. Lionel's example was precisely one of the cases.

      It beggars belief that Yes never played this stuff again after 74. Yes fans would have been over the moon if they had announced a tour playing this stuff again when the original members were still alive. Imagine if they had recreated the 70s tours with the music and stage sets. It would have been a huge hit. instead we get the dross that is modern day yes. Who cares if they play the old stuff when its only Steve howe and a bunch of Americans. And geoff of course but he can't really play Wakeman and Moraz's stuff

    • @leosullivan9228
      @leosullivan9228 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      to be fair it takes years of musicianship to catch up to the leading edge. live in '73, who had any sense of the structures? Steve and Billy are up to playng this live if fans wiil consistently request it. and Geoff ? he may actually be able to play Remembering, esp if he's not too proud to let a sequencer help for those long slow synth beats that did in Rick@@uv77mc85

    Definitely not a tune for the feint of heart. Really impressive playing as always. I commend you for taking on all of these challenging songs and mastering them. It seems like you could join up with some like minded musicians and form a Yes tribute band...maybe you already have. One other observation: so much of Yes music is driven by Steve Howe's brilliant parts, whether solos or all the elaborate and nuanced licks. Of course, it goes without saying that Squire's bass lines really shine--they're just so original.

    Nicely done, Miguel! I'll bet about half way through figuring all that out you were thinking "What have I gotten myself into?!" 😆
    Question unrelated to Chris' bass work on this: I'm guessing part of the appeal of "The Ancient" for you is Steve's acoustic playing. But what would your countrymen who are students of Spanish guitar think of his playing? Would they find merit in it, or would they dismiss it the same way people like Leonard Bernstein dismissed Kieth Emerson's attempts at classical piano?

    • @miguelbass
      @miguelbass  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      About "Spanish guitar", I can't comment on the Spanish native perspective because I am Portuguese. However I think Steve has assimilated in his (very successful) way some elements of Spanish guitar styles (e.g. Flamenco) - in the same way that he also applied classical guitar and american folk guitar styles to his playing. I think Spanish natives, especially those familiar with Flamenco music, will find more of a "foreign accent" on Steve's incursions, but in any case I don't think those aim to be completely faithful - Rather reflections of his influences withing his very personal guitar playing style. Thanks for watching and Happy Holidays.

    This track always bugged me, Steve pushing everyone out of the way with endless notes...Rick with nothing to do but chord washes...most disjointed yes ever...but flashes of melody rhythm and more as Alan and Chris went their own way here. and a couple of nice tunes. Ah Kin indeed.....

    • @MrFy2013
      @MrFy2013 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Rick does not play just 'chord washes' on this track (though they are very effective where he does play them). The opening section has him playing a bubbling, very Wakemanesque rapid organ figure throughout (one that first appeared on 'Six Wives' and would reappear on 'White Rock'). After 'they marched as one with the earth' there's a section featuring him playing a stately lead figure on his Mellotron and Moog. After that he carries the second melody after each of the two 'names of the sun' rounds, he trades the lead line on Moog, with Howe, in the short 7/4 interval between them, and he reappears with a countermelody line on Moog during 'Leaves of Green'.

    • @SunFellow941
      @SunFellow941 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's possibly my favorite arrangement Yes ever did. As soon as I first heard the album this was the track that amazed me. Wakeman does some wild mellotron chords-- really dissonant-- at one point. And the percussion arrangement is one of the best of three incredible ones in 1973: "Toccata" by ELP, "Larks Tongues in Aspic part one" by King Crimson, and "The Ancient." But Yes, Steve is the highlight throughout-- his mad Stravinsky period. I like the fact that this song is mostly instrumental. It represents the pinnacle of artistic freedom in 70s prog.
