    My wife and I do proctor care for teenagers. When a caseworker is trying to place a new kid with us the first thing they mention is whether or not they're a sex offender. We always ask, "What kind?".
    99% of the time it's something like fooling around with their girlfriend and their parents didn't like it. We truly need a different term for these kids. I know, a teenager maybe?
    I'm pretty sure I've been desensitized. If someone tells me they're a sex offender I reply with, "Okay.".

      Thanks for your sensitive approach to these issues! In many segments of the foster care and adoption system even children who have never been accused of sexually misbehaving are unable to find homes who will love them simply because they have been the victims of abuse and are thus labeled "potential future sex offenders".

    Another problem with the registry is how it destroys someones drive to be productive in society. If you get out and you have served your time, you want to get a job. You want to make things right. You want to prove you can operate in a normal state of mind and live a normal life.
    But when you want to go get the job you want they say "no". When you want to go see a family member's high school sports game they say "no". When you want to live with a supportive friend but they live within a certain distance of a school, park, or playground they say "no." If you get convicted of public urination, they also say "oh by the way you can't care for the elderly in a nursing home and you have to delete your social network accounts". There in lies the lack of a true system that can take a look at the crime and categorize it accordingly.
    A lot of the reasons that you may see people go back to prison is because every time they say "let me do these things to prove i can be productive" they continually keep getting restricted. It's no wonder that any type of person after getting out of jail has no motivation to do things when they constantly get shot down trying to do things that they said would help you maintain your sanity.
    Honestly, the registry is just a "feel good law" so that sheriffs and politicians can get more votes the next time they run and can say what a great job they did making sure the sex offenders don't run rampant. But go dig up all the new cases not stemming from a recidivist and they are no where better off.

    The Sex Offender registry is an abomination.
    No matter the crime (and I think child molestation is heinous, as well as that many that do it deserve death), no one should be on any list once they serve their time.
    If it's deemed by the judicial system that a person should no longer be in jail, that person should have all the freedoms available to them that anyone who has never been in jail does.
    It's downright evil to have laws discriminating against people who have in the past served jail time, for anything. If we truly think a person is a danger, they shouldn't be let out to begin with.

    • @TheAlexagius
      @TheAlexagius 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ***** victimless crimes aren't really crimes and so they shouldn't exist.

    • @Thurgor_Supreme
      @Thurgor_Supreme 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The problem is that we don't have an actual rehabilitation system. If there was something like court-ordered therapy in place or having your paychecks go to the victim until they're made whole, then we could get rid of this "once a criminal, always a convict" stigma. But no, all we do is throw people in a cage and let them rot, and if there's anything left of them by the end of it, we just piss on the ashes. Our society is diseased and disgusting.

    • @DRourk
      @DRourk 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ***** Not at all.
      No one should be sentenced past the time that they are reasonably deemed to no longer be a danger.
      Again, anyone not in jail should enjoy all the freedoms of anyone who's never been in jail. You're effectively sentencing someone to life if you put them on a list or deny them rights based upon a transgression they served their time for (if they are released). If they really pose a danger, they should not be outside of jail to begin with (and depending on the circumstances of their crime, perhaps not even alive). A person who has served their time in prison and has been released should be able to get on with their life. Denying them that does no one any good (except perhaps the businesses that make money off of all of this; which is another problem: the profit incentive needs to be removed entirely from the penal system.).

    • @DRourk
      @DRourk 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** You need to re-familiarize yourself with what 'violent' means. Also, there are plenty of non-violent crimes out there. Theft being one.
      The pertinent factor is if there is a victim or not, not whether it's violent or not. No one should be in jail, arrested, or anything else negative for a victimless crime.

    • @b-rad578
      @b-rad578 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      theknightswhosay alot less than you think. search any local registry near you and filter if by actual "predator". Many registries will differentiate between predator and non predator. A person who got caught with a couple pictures of child porn unknowingly on their computer still shows up on the same list as a sexually violent predator, but YOU have to do the little extra step to find that out. Most narrow minded people who don't understand these subtle differences are the ones who think every one is messed up in the head regardless of their crime

    As a guy living in Norway I would suggest the following. People under the age of consent does not have the same laws for them. Its stupid that a kid can get his life ruined by doing stuff he may not know the consequence of. I would also say that the age of consent is abit high in the US but that is a minor problem compared to the story of a 12 year old forever being prosecuted for something stupid he did when he was a child.

    • @5tevef

Where’s the registry for murders or ppl who have killed others drunk driving? Who’s to stop them from hopping into another car and doing it all over again? I wish I could understand exactly what it is about America that has led us down a path FAR more punitive than any other developed nation. Since we're a "nation of immigrants," and therefore the places we have come from are not nearly as keen on punishment of citizens as we are, how did we then get this way?
    I wonder whether it could be as simple as ambition. Are US prosecutors more 'vicious" because they're more ambitious?

      hoosierhiver Perhaps, but the problems still remain. If you make integration of a criminal after their sentence is served all but impossible, you are setting the stage for more crime further down the line or making the default penalty for most crimes life imprisonment.Not to mention I have yet to see any evidence that registries reduce crime, and just seems like an updated version of the scarlet letter, with the scandalous nature of anything sexually related being of more importance than actual harm reduction. It's public voyeurism.As it is, with the state acting as the ultimate helicopter parent, making even children walking to school illegal, I don't see much of anything changing with registries, except ever increasing amounts people being included on its rolls.

      A despotism under a democracy could see "a multitude of men", uniformly alike, equal, "constantly circling for petty pleasures", unaware of fellow citizens, and subject to the will of a powerful state which exerted an "immense protective power". Tocqueville compared a potentially despotic democratic government to a protective parent who wants to keep its citizens (children) as "perpetual children", and which doesn't break men's wills but rather guides it, and presides over people in the same way as a shepherd looking after a "flock of timid animals". ~Wikipedia

      I thought he said 16. Still, 9 years? For consensual sex with someone who is of legal age in some countries. Still pretty fucked up man. The fact that you have no sympathy for that person shows you have priorities wrong. People do less time for armed robbery, aggravated assault...
      Shit I just saw a case the other day where a woman held a knife to a police man's throat in a police station, tried to cut his throat but didn't succeed because she stopped him, and she only manage to give him a small cut. She got off scot free on the argument that she was just threatening the policeman and planned to take him hostage so they would release her husband. She said she felt scared and trapped as a woman. She got community service. Another one where a woman hired a hitman (undercover cop with a camera proving all of it) to kill her husband. When the undercover asked her why she said it was because there was insurance money. In court she made the argument that her husband was abusing her, and she got off on probation. The justice system is fucked up man. Especially when there's no doubt that that 14 year old didn't press charges, wasn't "traumatized", and in all likelihood just wanted to have sex with an older guy. I'm not saying what he did shouldn't be illegal; it should be. But 9 years and a sex offender list for the rest of his life? For what he did at 19? If you think that's okay you're a thoroughly fucked up person.

    • @user-vd2jk7dl3p
      @user-vd2jk7dl3p 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Colin Bell in some countries 9 is the legal age. So what? He was an adult at 19 and 14 is a child and LOOKS like a child. The fact that does not disturb you means your priorities are wrong. We are taking the story of a grown man who thought it was OK to sleep with a 14 year old boy that he "had known for a long time and was really close to". So I doubt the sexual interest in the boy started at 14 but more like 12 or 13. I don't know about the other guys' stories and I am not saying that everyone on the list deserves to be there but that dude in particular needs to be on somebodies list. ( and I would say the same if he were a woman). Also I think we should keep in mind that we only have one side of these stories. It is really easy to feel sympathy when you don't hear from the other people involved.

    Arguing sex offenders pose no threat to children is completely false. Convicted sex offenders have a 5% re-offense rate (meaning 5% of all convicted sex offenders recommit a sex crime). That is the smallest recidivism rates out of all criminal offenders (murderers have a higher rate of recidivism at 6%).
    Statistically speaking there's a 5/100 odds of a sex offender molesting another child. There are also dozens of other factors not calculated in this statistical analysis, one such being identical circumstances to the original offense.
    A sex offender who molests a child they are baby sitting if given the opportunity to continue to baby sit children, after a period of time of comfortability will have increased odds of re-offense.
    So the question is what is a permissable risk %? The answer is 0% even if 1% was the odds it's too much.
    Florida is on the right track with sex offenders, separating them from society is the correct course of action.
    Florida has several towns in which sex offenders are permitted to live that keep them out of civil society. A sex offender shouldn't be left homeless or jobless (an unintentional side effect of their criminal conviction in most cases) yet it's a side effect steaming from their own decision to harm others.
    States should provide housing and separation from society, giving them their own towns, with jobs, housing, etc.

    so if that 14 year old girl was having a "consensual sexual relationship" with another 14-16 year old its ok? No! When youre 14 you have no clue who you are and what you are doing in life! This GOOF is 19 (NINTEEN)! so HE SHOULD KNOW BETTER! A 14 YEAR OLD GIRL IS A CHILD!!! What if this girl was his daughter and some 19 year old is perving on her, how would he feel bout that???

    That would suck I may be wrong but from what I have noticed there is more hatred for sex offenders then any other group and people don't really care what they are actually on there for so ya everyone would be judged just as badly.

    So few of these cases are violent. Almost all of these cases, regardless of the age of the people involved, are completely harmless and often times beneficial. Society is so into this idea that kids cannot give consent that they go ballistic with the legal system and end up hurting so many people in the process. Rape should be charged, not consensual sex.

    • @itzystreamingplaylistsonch5471

      He was re arrested last year in Wichita Falls for another sex crime. smh
      Disappointing really. This guy was getting support from his community and fucked up again. He didnt learn his lesson and he is reoffending. He knew what the consequences would be like. And he still chose to take that risk. He deserves whatever he's got coming to him. I would of been more sympathetic if he would remained clean. So, I guess the sex offender registry really kept the community safe didn't it?

    Wow you people are damaged.
    While I do believe that if a person has stayed out of trouble for a long enough period of time that their name should come off the registry. This idea that the registry or laws to protect children from predators are draconian is insane.
    I am sure that if it was you or your child whose life was ruined by a predator you would all feel differently.

    • @fbibarbie
      @fbibarbie 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree I think the main problem is that all sex offenders on considered equally bad socially I dunno if making a different sight for minor ones would help there should be something done some someones life is not completely ruined and assume by everyone to be a child rapist.

      Yeah, not towards the person but towards myself. If you can't do your job as the parent THE CHILD'S FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE. THEN WHY DID YOU HAVE THEM EM? I had the same argument with my mother as to why she had me. Her response was because she felt like it. NOW, tell me if you are the parent WHY WOULD YOU SAY SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO YOUR CHILD?
