1969 a 12 year old kid looking for a "rock" concert naively scored tickets for a show of "nobody he had heard of" artists Bo Diddly, John Lee Hooker and Charlie Musselwhite. On that night Elmo Watt was born when Charlie stepped on stage and ignited a flame in my soul.
I forget which of his albums I bought first; but it changed me. Now LOTS of albums and about $1000 worth of Lee Oskar's later I still can't play well--But I had fun tryin. He didn't just give me harmonica he gave me the Blues, what a gift to a 70's rocker. I enjoy the other great harp players too -but Charlie? I love Charlie
Yu guys, Charlie Musselwhite is a national treasure, a worldwide gem. He's been called our Elder Statesman of the Blues. I always think back to a show in Portland at a place called Springer's in 1969, Tim Kaihatsu on guitar. Tim was warming up his scales and Charlie walked out and lifted his dark glasses and smiled. I knew right then we were in for a treat. Thank you Charlie for all these many years of great music. You're the real thing, and not all of 'em are. I mean by that he stands shoulder to shoulder with Muddy, Wolf, Little Walter, Otis Rush and Otis Spann. I didn't even need to say that. You guys already knew it. And for standing next to this great blues man, Thank you Henrietta!
used to catch him in Sebastopol and around the so co area for many years..when i lived there...nor cal was always packed full of the great bluesmen at the local spots! ahh the good times ..let em roll*

Sometimes I hear him using an A harp-3rd position. But I still feel stymied! Charley is better every year on his vocals. Think I got it-3rd position-he really has mastered the scale at the bottom end. Lovely!
Musselwhite's version of L.Walter's "Just a Feelin" sounds more like "just an estimation" to me. I'm a harp player going back many decades when harp players were trying to sound like Paul Butterfield. Musselwhite's 'processed' amplification destroys the upper register and jacks up the bass response, delivering a 'beefy' and full tone. BUT, it ain't Little Walter's by a mile. Charlie has his own sound, which is curiously strange by comparison to many modern players. Kim Wilson has TWICE the power and three times the variety for my money. Rod Piazza has been playing as many years as Charlie. This ain't "Blues with a Feeling" or "Just a Feelin" by any stretch of the imagination. Turn off the mic signal processing Charlie. Listen to Kim Wilson, Jason Ritchie, Mark Ford and many others as their delivery is clean NOT BASS WRAPPED!

For you harp nuts out these, Musslewhite is playing in 3rd position on an A harp.
That works, also, I got it with a Will Wilde special tuned Low E harp in Second position . Get some great high bends
