I used to live to the West of Hull in the '70s and watched the Humber Bridge gradually take shape. A very curious thing happened to me last year while I was on a motorcycle tour which took us through Lincolnshire. We had stopped off at a friends house for coffee and he handed me a mug which was a commemorative one for the opening of the bridge. After 5 minutes I did a double-take of the mug and realised it was forty years to that very day that the bridge opened. My friend had no idea and had just taken out the first mug he saw. Our route was taking us North to Hull that afternoon, so we crossed the bridge on its birthday.
