    With the regards to the gasket, most of us just left them on. it was a service part that was replaced every year. We rode those bikes as transport, it was how we got around back then.

    Bought the last one in South Australia. Road raced, dragged, hill climbed, toured interstate- the best road bike ever made.

      @@agylub Now I’ve hit 60 it’s so much more comfortable for myself than modern sports bikes with half an inch of hard foam for a seat , this thing is a sofa on wheels .

    That's a great job and a nice bike. I had one back in 1983. Sold it for £750!. Mine had the mirrors mounted on the handle bars. The paint is great. One of my pet hates these days is bikes seem to be drowning in clear coat. They were never like that but your painter has got it right.

    What an amazing job you've done! The only thing it hasn't got (that I couldn't see) is a gear indicator. My friend at the time had a GS550, 1979, and that had the gear indicator. Have to agree about the seat, it was really comfortable.

    • @runesika

      A gear indicator is not a feature of the GS1000S but it does have everything else ! 👍

    Hi I've just watched your video of your immaculate GS1000S what a great job you've done, well done.
    I bought mine a red and white one new in 1980 for £2045 and still got it with 53000 on the clock.
    They're a great bike my wife and myself have travelled around Europe more than once on it and on one occasion due to a tooth ache rode 1080 miles in one day on it. I still got my third original system on it but did give the engine a refresh at 47000 but still on standard bores.
    Like others have said the gasket was trimmed from new. When I look around for spares it scares me the prices of them. Mine is used still on a regular basis mainly local as we now tour on a modern bike.
    Like I said mine is in original condition and I plan to keep it that way as the paint work is standing the test of time very well. The one thing I would like to replace or repair is the seat as its got a couple of little splits in it. In your video I couldn't quite hear where you got your seat from.

    • @runesika
      @runesika  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello , thank you for the compliment. I managed to get the seat from the U.S , it was listed on eBay.
      It is a standard original seat for the GS 1000s , I was extremely lucky to find it complete with the grab rail and under seat trim . The GS maybe getting old but the seat is like a sofa compared to some modern bikes so a good choice for your European trips in the past .

    • @kernowkimpy1600
      @kernowkimpy1600 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@runesika Yes my wife says it's still the most comfortable seat of all our bikes over the years.
      On a trip to Brands WSB in the 90's I had a slight miss fire so pulled off the metal caps replaced the condensers, points, plugs and caps while my wife had a coffee and on we went with no more problems something you would struggle to do on modern bikes, although I have now changed to electronic ignition.

    A beautiful job & a real credit to you. The paintwork looks amazing...definitely head and shoulders above the original factory finish.
    The paintwork on mine is still factory original & although it is now showing it's age I'm resisting the urge to restore it as it remains pretty much as I remember it when it was sold new in April 1980 (£2045 on the road). Enjoy the ride; the GS series probably have the most comfortable seats ever fitted to any motorcycle...

So just wanted to congratulate you, i know the effort it takes and this is as good as it gets. @@runesika In early 1980 I test rode that exact model bike in Australia aged 21 years of age. It was as new. Back then dealers did not have to carry comprehensive insurance. So of course I agreed as I believed I was invincible. 15 minutes from the dealership and on a lovely fine dry morning as I overtook a motor vehicle in the left lane said car decide to quickly change lanes while I was doing a mere 35mph. The impact broke my right foot and snapped the front wheel/fork assembly clean off the bike after which it cartwheeled into utter oblivion. I had no job, it was uninsured and the accident was deemed my fault as I was deemed at fault overtaking on the left. It took me 7 years to pay off the damaged bike as rebuilt by the dealer. It was around AU$3,700.00 in 1980. Cheers.

    All credit to you! As someone who spent upwards of 25,000 quid on a full Z1-R restoration, I would say you are shelling out some really sage advice. If you aim for 10 you might get it. If you aim for 8 you'll get 6. I vowed never to do another one having well and truly scratched that itch. That said, never say never eh?! Well done. and DON"T be afraid to ride it!!

      Thank you , I appreciate the comment . It’s so difficult to stop oneself once you find a N.O.S part everything existing on the bike suddenly looks shabby.

    Excellent restoration and some very useful tips too. I have exactly the same bike although mine is looking a bit tired but your video has given me some much needed inspiration. You talked about the fairing screen trim and this is something I am in need of - along with the trim that goes on the tail cover behind the seat. Any ideas on where to find these bits?

    • @runesika
      @runesika  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My advice would be to scan eBay day and night and hopefully whatever you are looking for will turn up . It took me over two years to find the parts required for this bike , eBay produced a Rev counter , seat with grabrail and under trim (USA), fairing edge trim , F section gauge cluster trim , oil temperature gauge in Fahrenheit , glass for oil, petrol, clock , tail trim (USA ) , clips for tail trim , 2 x original exhausts , footrest & rubbers , front fairing , front mudguard , air box , carb rubbers , left side "Suzuki " cover , left and right mirrors etc etc .
      I don’t think two years would be enough if you started today as I think I was lucky that some of these parts were listed .
      It’s sort of "painful fun " collecting all the parts required but don’t even start it you think any of this will be cheap, if it’s listed BUY IT , don’t wait for a cheaper one because it’s not going to happen .
      The other problem you have is getting people to finally part with and list their stock of parts , an example being I now have a NOS spare exhaust but it’s pointless selling it while I own the bike due to the possibility of me damaging the one on the bike and I would be unable to fix it if I sold my spare!
      Hopefully I’m not putting you off but go in with your eyes open and don’t compromise on anything ( if you can afford to do so )
      . If you didn’t already own the bike I would say buy one with most of the hard to find parts already there , probably cheaper in the long run . Happy hunting 👍

    Hello
    it is a superb restoration of GS 1000 S from 1979
    every detail is respected ...
    I also have the same model same year I also restored it while leaving some authentic original parts to respect the year of this bike.
    I have original exhaust pipe on which it is marked DGM33922 S
    apparently it would be rare do you know the difference with those you have on your motorcycle?
    the sound is different
    if you know the difference let me know.
    I can also see taking pictures
    happy new year
    Robert

    • @runesika
      @runesika  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robert
      Thank you for the comment , it’s very much appreciated. I found two sets of original NOS exhausts (see my earlier video on the GS ) they are both marked DGM33922S this number is also on the top of the air box near the housing lid .
      I’m sorry I don’t know if the number is only correct for the S model it could also be correct for the 1979 GS1000E etc , I also have another air box just marked GS1000 so maybe the DGM33922S air box is only for the S ? . Happy new year too you too .
