  • Wolf Cleugh cottages from about 1890 to now. Once the home to the Clementson family, whose lives, particularly that of Matthew Clementson, were to change as a result of the initial 1850s gold rush around Ballarat and Bendigo in Victoria, on the other side of the world in Australia. Wonder what could have happened to make them just leave their home to fall into ruin.

You seem to be documenting my family, John! My 6x great-grandfather Anthony Maddson died at Wolf Cleugh in 1771. It's fascinating to think that such an idyllic location today, would then have been a polluted industrial landscape, surrounded by spoilheaps. Another very moving piece of footage. Thank you.

Thanks again, after posting this video I was contacted by a distant relative of the Clementson family who had lived there, some of them left to mine for gold in Australia. Now I have another bit of history about the place, just wonderful! If you're on Facebook you should join 'We Love Weardale' and 'Weardale through time', lots of history for you on there and maybe some connections.
