I'm here thinking about Irving's first point, about how things used to be more wholesome, social, and convivial when he was a child. The thing is, I was born in 1985 and I also feel this way. It's not possible that both of us are right - if things really were on such a decline when he wrote this 200 years ago, then there would be no such thing as holiday spirit or family gatherings by the time I was born. This must be one of those things all adults feel - it's probably not that things were actually better then, but that all the adults around us went out of their way to make the holidays special for us, and we were young enough to feel the magic. Either way, thanks for posting this. It's a tradition for me to read this story collection every Christmas, and this audiobook allowed me to listen while taking my dog for a nice long winter walk.
