Many thanks for the interesting story! I'm learning English as a foreign language, so I sometimes have trouble understanding grammatically complex sentences. I'm wondering if the sentence "What's such a fantastic looking woman was doing with such an ordinary looking man?" is grammatically correct. I'd really appreciate it if you could explain the sentence clearly. As always, I wish you the best of luck!
Hi thanks for you kind words and your interesting question. I have gone back and reread the sentence you ask about and you are absolutely correct I’ve added a ‘was’ when I shouldn’t have so although it would be understood it’s wrong. Let's break it down and correct the sentence "What's such a fantastic looking woman was doing with such an ordinary looking man?" 1. Subject-Verb Agreement and Tense The correct structure for a question should be: "What is/was [subject] doing [predicate]?" The verb "was" is used incorrectly with "What's," which implies "What is." I am guessing that when I wrote it I was caught in the flow of the story and switched was/is and autocorrect simply contracted it. 🤦🏼♂️ 2. Correction We need to choose the correct auxiliary verb to match the tense and structure. If present tense is intended: "What is such a fantastic looking woman doing with such an ordinary looking man?" If past tense is intended: "What was such a fantastic looking woman doing with such an ordinary looking man?" 3. Articles and Adjectives "such a fantastic looking woman" and "such an ordinary looking man" are correct as they use "such a/an" to modify the noun phrases appropriately. 4. Word Order I needed to ensure the word order follows standard question format: Auxiliary verb + Subject + Main verb. So there are two possible correct sentences Present tense: "What is such a fantastic looking woman doing with such an ordinary looking man?" or Past tense: "What was such a fantastic looking woman doing with such an ordinary looking man?" Hope this helps and thanks for pointing it out - Steve
