You hope that the strength of the crew and the integrity of the ship itself will carry you through to safety at the end of your voyage. Because of that kind of reliance on one's ship it has always been tradition for sailors to think of a ship as being a woman, which is why everyone has been writing comments as "she".
@Thespides lol, germanys military was being deactivated anyway, so it would have gone into dissuse and been broken down, this way its actually preserved

My nephew sailed her twice. Once as a crew member and once as a member of her command. He was an instructor at the CG academy.
My husband misses this ship! He was the SK1 for two tours and left for shore duty August 2002. If he had the chance, he'd go back!
