    Alot of people did this in the 19th century with BP. It works really good. They had a powder horn for the most part so they could use more and even cartridges were BP.
    PRO TIP: If you want a fool proof fire starter. Wet black powder in water. It will come pasty. Take patches for muzzle loading or the wife's makeup pads, and soak them in the wet BP.
    let them dry. NOT IN THE SUN OR NEAR ANYTHING HOT. BP is extremely sensitive!
    Whenever you need fire, one spark from a flint and steel, or a sun beam from a magnifying glass, a simple static spark from your own skin and boom. FIRE!

      Now would this technic also work with black powder substitute like hogdens FFFg or FFg?

    • @northernwoodsman
      @northernwoodsman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BillHinson no I dea. Substitutes might act like BP, but they are not the real thing and far from it. They add alot of ingredients in substitutes.
      You could try it. Wer a bit of powder in a bottle cap or something and take a square of toilet paper or a rag to soak it up.

    This method of using gunpowder to aid in getting that ignition really works well with the fire rolling technique too. Even a single granule of BP, or a single rod of smokeless, and you're going to get a hot coal very quickly.

    Hey, Dan, good idea thanks. But try this...no pliers. Just use you knife handle or a stone and put the bullet neck on a rock and tap around the circumference of the shell. It expands the brass allowing you to pull the bullet out with you fingers. I used to do that as a kid to get powder for my homemade cannons.

    Thanks Dan , for this very savvy and practical hack for hunters/outdoors folks . I suspect that most people needing to use this will probably be using something other than a pair of pliers to remove the projectile , like their knife . Or perhaps a better alternative would be to " sandwitch " the cartridge's bullet between two rocks , something rigid like the lanyard hole of your axe shaft , or in a real pinch , the end of your rifle barrel ( NOT recommend , as this will almost certainly damage the barrel's muzzle crown and possibly get stuck , rendering your firearm temporarily useless ) , then " prying " out the bullet by levering the brass case back and forth . Or doing the opposite , by wedging the case between something instead , then knocking the lead sideway back and forth with the spine of your knife or whatever you can find . Dunno . Will have to experiment w/this . After all , we're bushcrafters ; we ought to be able to find a way , right ? (;-) .

  • @craigkirby9202
    @craigkirby9202 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you tried just taking the projectile from the round, keeping it upright, placing it in the rifle, and holding a tinder bundle to the end of the barrel? I remember an Australian guy who was lost in the outback for a while starting a fire by doing something like what I describe. ( I can't remember the details as it was 30 years ago or so) You could also probably do it by slamming two rocks together with the cartridge between them.
    Anyway... Good tip. One more thing to file away.

  • @nicholaschristodoulou2203
    @nicholaschristodoulou2203 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excellent instructional video! Seems to me that the game changer with this friction fire technique is the gun powder which ignites the tinder bundle so well. It got me to thinking .... as this would be excellent for a hunter who obviously carries gunpowder, what could a hiker as myself use in lieu of the gunpowder that I would normally carry? I wonder if Vaseline ( which I normally carry a small tube for numerous uses to include as a fire accelerant) would work? I would replace the gunpowder with some Vaseline and even put a little of it on the tinder bundle to insure a burn. It would not ignite as quickly as gunpowder, but would it ignite in such a scenario? Guess there is only one way to find out. Thanks for getting my “mental wheels” rolling. Always enjoy your videos!

  • @mg556linked

    It's cool how quickly the friction gets the powder going, but, if you have a cartridge, why not use the primed brass fired in the rifle, with some wadding place in the case, to light the powder, tender kindling, etc? Assuming you are already cannabalizing cartridges, it seems a waste not to use the primer.
