The Oval track is really cool, I've got 94 Diskont and 'Do While' is a great track. But I do think that the glitch scene became better about 2000, with the classic Click n Cuts series.
I remember this show! This is a pretty good example of the fuckin weird stuff Mixing it would showcase on Friday nights, even farther out than Peel at his freakiest. - Such an odd show for an otherwise pretty stuffy and old fashioned BBC classical radio station.
I don't understand ! Like lot of French I'm a big shit in english. So, it would be very nice if someone make me a summary of what Richard James said. Then I translate. :)
He was saying that he makes some of his own instruments and keeps them in his parents house in Wales. He'll make a bunch of samples at his parent's then take them to London that will keep him busy for about 4 months. He also mentioned he likes about 1% of Jungle because he likes the crazy rhythms and he's inspired by the Jungle tracks his mare Luke Vibert makes. He also said he used to make a track in a day. Now he takes his time and he spends about 3-4 days making a track.
Ventolin is amazing. You must be from this new weak ass generation of kids that only likes soft fluffy crap all the time. That's why music now has no balls, no fire, no energy whatsoever. All sounds like it can be played in a library or office somewhere as to make people as comfortable as possible at all times.
I know this is an old comment, but there is a group called "Stock, Hausen and Walkman" which I believe is not affiliated with the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, although it is a play on his name (among other things.)
What?! It's one of Aphex Twin's best...he even put out a single of that song so I guess Aphex twin doesn't know what's good. You must be from this new weak ass generation of kids that only likes soft fluffy crap all the time. That's why music now has no balls, no fire, no energy whatsoever. All sounds like it can be played in a library or office somewhere as to make people as comfortable as possible at all times.
Karlheinz Stockhausen was producing pretentious, unlistenable twaddle just to get attention when my parents were teenagers. It was pointless rubbish lacking talent and musicality then, just as it is now. Nothing I've heard of his work has altered that in over a generation. I'm not a fan boy of RDJ's works, some's good, especially his ambient work, some not so great but still recognisable as music, IMHO. But I'd at least acknowledge that he makes music that people can and still do go to listen to, live, for enjoyment rather than a snotty talking point in a vain attempt to elevate one's pitiful social status. The fact that those other irrelevants of society, critics, ("oh, darrrling") love KS tells you every last thing you need to know and ignore. But the real measure of RDJ as a person over Karlheinz is that he doesn't knock other composers. As soon as you start making cynical, snide remarks about a new generation of artists, you instantly lose your relevance. Not that the German gentleman ever had any, unlike some of his fellow countrymen and women, later electronic composers such as Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Propaganda, Phaebel or Martin Sturtzer, to name just a few. Well done RDJ for not taking the bait.
What's with all these guys going into a purely experimental direction? No composure at all, no pattern to follow.. absolutel rubbish. Richard, don't lie you don't listen to that shit lol
Meanwhile Iannis Xenaxis in one of RDJ's influences. LOL you're the kind of person that's the reason he shunned mainstream success for most of his career.
Starting off with "Ventolin?" He means business!

Out of all his tunes, that Track ‘Children Talking’ was what converted me, got me into aphex twin. Listening to that high in 2010 was something else.
why in gods name have i never heard this interview
Because Radio 3 tends to be there for the pretentious middle classes with nothing useful to contribute to the world.

Those last two tracks were incredible. The rest of it (with the exception of the AFX stuff and the Oval track) was pretty diabolical lol.
Very good interview, great post.
I'd say interesting interviewee, not so great interviewer. The man didn't even know of the film Forbidden Planet. Better research needed.
Great show, really interesting insights to the man.
Thank you for this my friend.
