Just what I needed! Thank you. You would shake your head if you saw the spring that came out of that machine I’m working on right now. The right one is on order and hopefully will be here soon.

Oh good, thanks for letting me know. I can just imagine what that spring look like. I found some weird fixes on some of the machines. Once that spring gets there, you'll be in business in no time

@@UniversalEngineer It's a good plan, Bill! I have a viewer in Canada who spends the warm season accumulating machines and then the winter months restoring them all. He is with a group that does this and donates the machines or profits from them to charities, So far they have done about 40 machines. He said no more boring winters for him, haha. Here in Arizona, I hide out at home most of the summer and that is when I did most of my restorations and videos. After your previous comment I checked way in the back of my small storeroom and sure enough, found a 403A back there. I thought it was an empty broken case but the machine inside is very nice. With my health, it will take months to restore, but I'm looking forward to one more Slant-O-Matic Special 403A. I'm glad you commented. 🙏

Wonderful videos!!! Thanks so much for taking the time to explain everything so complete.
Keep it up. I have all the 400 and 500 series Singers and they all are working but I sure would like to get brave enough to tear one apart because of your videos.

Thank you very much! Since you obviously appreciate the machines you really should give it a go. I know you can do it and you will find it a very rewarding experience. I'd suggest you start with the 404 model as it is the simplest mechanically and I have a 56 video step-by-step tutorial for it: th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKIB4kvIHCfHYuyLMUp5A4UI.html
It's fairly hard to hurt a machine like this and you can take your time as you go. I'm here if you have questions along the way. Thanks for watching my channel.

Thank you, Dan! i have a Singer 675g of which I can find no information or even a picture of the machine on line, and although there are some different workings inside, your explanation of how the cam followers and tension arm work have helped me to puzzle this out. The 670 is the closest model I can find to mine, however, again, there are differences, and no videos on the inside workings. The 403 is a good, simplistic, example of mine.
My upper cam follower (this machine has a stack of cams) is not going into the dip of the cam. The spring that hooks between the tension arm and the vibrating arm sure looks like thinner metal and a much wimpier spring than the one on the machine in this video (and others on your videos). All parts move freely.
There is a button to depress on that 'opening door off the vibrating needle arm' (sorry, brain cannot find the words), which allows one to change the cam selection levers; it moves the vibrating arm position toward the machine, which then causes the needle to be off center from the needle plate; however, upon releasing the button the vibrating arm does not spring back into position, as I think it should.
I am wondering if I should replace the spring? I wonder if this was a common problem with the 600 series. (also, the spring was on backwards from the 400 series, with the long end of the wire hooked to the tension arm; I have seen still photos of this in 600 series, but wonder if it is correct).
I apologize for the long post; I have been frowning over this machine for weeks. I bought it at a second hand store for my daughter about 20 years ago, had it in to be fixed; no improvement, and I finally decided to tinker with it myself. (I managed to follow your video on removing the vibrating arm, and the pressure foot dial thingy, cleaned them up, timed the machine, and straight stitch works wonderfully)
    thanks again! Michele

So, I've never seen or touched a 675G but found some pictures online and the instruction manual for models 655/675 is still available at Singer. I do not know how different the 675G is from the one in the 675 Manual. In my experience, most Singer Models that end in "G" were made in Germany. Many of them have migrated into the USA from Canada. (I don't know where you live).
As far as the spring having the long end connected to the tension arm I have seen several machines with the spring either way. I'm not sure it matters as long as there is clearance for the spring where it connects up by the vibrating bracket. There are some smaller springs down below the lifters and followers too.
To be honest, I've only worked on a couple of T & S style machines and just do not care for them. They both had trouble in the parts around the cam stack area. One Singer OSMG told me they called the model Touch & Toss and Touch & Trash and Touch and $#*!. On the two I worked on 95 % of the problems were gone after I washed, dried and oiled the machine. I'm not sure about that """button to depress on that 'opening door off the vibrating needle arm'""" thing you mention, but I do know that there are settings of the buttons on the front of the machine that moves the needle into left-center-right positions. If you are moving the button sliders into a position you think is a certain pattern and the needle s is moving off-center that may mean that the machine needs cleaning like parts are sticking to other parts and making them move a little bit. Also, some patterns are made to move the needle to the left of center on purpose. Also, if you use the special patters discs (plastic cams) one of the levers must be in the "SPECIAL" position to engage the lifter/follower system, BUT, BUT the lever must be moved OFF OF SPECIAL when putting on or taking off the special discs, then moved to the Special position to sew. If a special disc was forced on or off the cam stack springs it may have damaged/moved some of the parts.
The main idea of all the Touch & Sew Models basically follows the 401A Slant-o-Matic. That machine had two knobs on the front that you either pushed and turned or pulled and turned to select a pattern. The 600 & 700 series changed to levers on some models and big dials on other models, but the idea was still a cam stack with 6 to 8 metal cams and lifters to raise or lower the followers to the correct cam ( or two cams) and the followers connect to the needle bar driving arm and that connects to the vibrating bracket and that connects to the needle bar to make it swing for the pattern that was chosen. Most of these machines had front and rear followers.
You asked about replacing the spring. I doubt that would help, but if you think the spring is "weak" or "worn" you could add a rubber band to the two connection points to see if more spring resistance changed the situation.
I think you could almost use any T & S Service Manual to work on your machine. Even if some of the parts changed they mostly are in the same place and work alike. I have an old model 628 service manual and you can have it if you email my channel at andytube53@gmail.com and ask for it. I also have some 600 & 700 parts lists diagrams. The 675G documents are not in any of my files and that is normal for machines made in Germany and some South American and Taiwan made models. Before I forget, if you need the 675 instruction manul it is free at this link: www.singer.com/sites/default/files/outdated_product/SINGER%20655%20and%20675%20Sewing%20Machine.pdf

@@andytubesewing1953 OMG...I put one of those big blue elastics from the brocolli to connect the vibrating arm to the tension arm and TA DA! It worked! I have zig zag and the vibrating arm returns to its position. There is finally pressure on the cam follower. Thank you for the idea! I wonder how long that elastic will hold? ha ha.
I have a 401 in the studio (too cold out there) so I am familiar with all the dials and gizmos. The pdf link you gave me is the right one. I had one for the 656 and 676; I think they are the same models but different countries? Anyhoo, I am so happy! Thank you!!!

Thanks for posting these videos! You’ve helped me so much. I have a 403a the was totally locked when I got it, but now the needle swings pretty freely from left to right with the zero cam in. My problem is with the needle position selector. Left and center work fine, but the needle bar won’t shift to the right when the selector knob is in that position. Any thoughts?

The NB may not be properly centered, and I think there is an adjustment for the NB positioning lever. They should be in the Service Manual that covers the 401A, 403A, and 404. Free download is here: sewingdude.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/singer-401-service-manual1.pdf

Hi Andy, do you fully disassemble the driving arm when you clean it? If cleaning of a driving arm is covered in another video, I was unable to find it. I've taken most of the screws out of mine, but the ball pivot is an intimidating one! Apologies if that is a dumb question; I'm servicing my first 401A with guidance from your videos, so thank you for providing so much information!
