Nyx, what happened when you lost your stuff was actually, that the skelleton shot and killed you (if you look at the death-message it says "sunrenity was shot by Skeleton"), dropping all your stuff, THEN the creeper blew up a split second later 'killing' all your items before they had time to potentially escape the blast radious.
