To be fair, his plan is already in motion when Malfurion discovered that he was the cause of the splitting of northrend
I thought about but if the spell was harmless and would just kill the Lich King, I'm sure he would just explain that to Malfurion and Malfurion would not fight him and let him cast it. Illidan knew the Spell will have severe Ramifications for Azeroth through global warming and would indirectly cause a lot of people and nature to Perish. He Knew Malfurion would never let him do that, that's why he fought instead. On Illidan's side He did not really care. He was hoping to get closer to Kil'jaeden and buy his Trust so he could destroy the Legion. The Reward was an excuse. He knew no matter how big the consequences of using the Eye like that, Azeroth would still survive. That is still far better than Legion destroying the entire universe.
Novel _"World of Warcraft: Illidan"_ covered that part
But as Uther/Bolvar said, no control will make the scourge even more rampant. Illidan will cause more harm in destroying the Lich King.
I just realized like someone like movie thanos,illidan is a rationalist who believes himself a destiny to save the universe. Of course they are both flawed no one will argue that, but they have good intentions but are willing to stoop to lowest lows to do what they think is right.
After 13 years, this game still looks brilliant, gameplay, mechanics, atmosphere and lore is just superb!

It was just a minor set-back
He was. All he wanted to do was save his people from the magic addiction. But sloppy writing turned him into a villain in wow burning crusade.

Shows you what Malfi is all about. He doesn't care about the world. He cares about Tyrande. Therefore he's a selfish prick unlike Illidan, who actually gave up the woman he loved, the respect of his people, his eyes and much more to save the world Malfurion "cares" for oh, so much.
He never gave her up, he was never chosen by her.
He had the oppurtunity to destroy the skull of Gul'dan but instead he chose to absorb it for more power. "If I claim this power as my own, I will become stronger than any of Archimonde's lieutenants".
Illidan is cool af but he's no hero, he did what he did for power.

Congratulations, you are retarded. Like you just ignored the fact that he is an archdruid. Yeah sure, being a druid doesn't mean you can't be a selfish prick, Fandral Staghelm is a very good example. But it does make it pretty much impossible to not care about the world, since melding with nature is a prerequisite of being a druid.
But I understand that for you anything more complex than "green magic" is too much.
Malfuron's voice actor did a fantastic job int his scene
I love Illidan, i always felt bad for him that he never found love. I love the dynamic between the Stormrage brothers, and to be honest, I fell in love with Maiev Shadowsong. Kael'Thas is voiced by the awesome man with a master plan, Quinton Flynn! I fell in love with Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, so much so that i named my late Husky after him. Much love to the OG Warcraft fans, currently playing through Warcraft:Orcs and Humans

WOTK? People keep saying it's going to shit but seldom give examples.
I do remember playing Warcraft 1 and Warcraft and with Warcraft 1, the story was rough, 2 was more refined and three was where the main idea of how the world works while connecting the other two previous games. WoW has an interesting aspect because most people don't realize that at least 60% of the lore people like comes from WoW or novelizations. Sure does it have some spots that are "Eh" but alot of fiction does, especially when it's tied to gameplay. I'd say if I had to place a "Writing go to shit'(and I use that term loosely) it'd probably be Shadowlands, but Blizzard had a scandal, people leaving and Covid making working harder so it isn't exactly a surprise
Yesterday I mentioned that I didn't like this part of the story much and it's basically because I think the characters are acting out of character ;]
Tyrande would not essentially sacrifice herself for Kael'thas' cause, we know she doesn't trust strangers and on top of that he is the descendant of the highbourne elves and their relations with the night elves were not so good to begin with.
It doesn't seem fitting for Maiev to fangirl over Malfurion as well as to abandon Tyrande and lie about her death (mostly judging by the books)
Malfurion banished Ilidan and refused his help when the fate of the entire world was at stake, but now he all of a sudden does the exact opposite to save Tyrande, even after Illidan tried to kill her several episodes ago.
Not to mention that Illidan's now telling Tyrande that he never meant any harm to her and she believes him after the recent events

+xLetalis I think that after the final battle in RoC Tyrande understood that strangers may not be bad since Furion trusted them and his plan worked.
Maiev did not like Tyrande for setting Illidan free, but that's not why she lied to Furion. She needed him focused on defeating Illidan. Though I would do that a bit another way - by telling she was lost, not killed.
When Illidan met Tyrande here, he only rooted her in place. Order to kill was given when others came to kill him when Tyrande simply wanted to stop him.
And Furion banished Illidan because he was afraid of Illidan's demon form and (over?)confident in own ability to defeat Archimonde. Here Illidan offers a chance to find Tyrande using the ways unavailable to Furion. Why not take that chance?
Just my opinion. One part I don't like here is why couldn't Illidan explain what is he going to do with the artifact if he believed that it is right thing to do? Even without mentioning some other details.
-Its perfectly in character for maiev to lie about tyrande, she is hellbent on capturing illidan.(books are not even canon, she killed innocents to stop alliance&horde interactions)
-Tyrande knows about illidans feelings, and he is an ancient friend. His demonification may have confused her though.
-illidan would never even think about hurting tyrande, where the hell illidan tries to kill her

It's all based on mistrust, I find the scenarios fairly realistic instead of what you often see in movies. Malfurion especially has forsaken the trust he has for his brother and that he'd truly save the world. Illidan may WANT to save the world, but what says his own means wouldn't end it anyway? Illidan has always been about sacrificing things and Malfurion the opposite.
Though it makes sense that one thing Malfurion would trust his brother to uphold, is helping find Tyrande, especially when he had means he didn't. It's easy to get desperate when a loved one is at risk, when it's harder to grasp about a world being at stake, it's hard to compare the two.
In turn, Illidan has kinda given up trying to explain his plans and actions, knowing no one will believe him anyway or understand his concept of sacrificing some to save the many. He knows his brother or Tyrande wouldn't be onboard with that, so better to save the trouble.
Kinda ironic that Kael is assisting the night elves and attacking "illidan and their vile snakes," whereas next campaign, they join the dark side.

Well, the night elves just assisted his party so he assists them back. And when Vashj tells Kael that the very guy he had fought against several chapters ago was the only one who could help him with his magical addiction... well, can you blame him?
Kael'thas had always been a confused guy lol. It wasn't that far fetched that he turned 180° in TBC.
To be fair, he and his people were suffering from magic withdrawal symptoms and were about to be executed by the alliance until Vashj saved him

I would say that had Illidan been successfull in casting the spell, it would not have only caused destruction of Lich King, but likely whole of Northernd, causing similar cataclysmic event as explosion of Well of Eternity.
I very much doubt that Kil'jaeden would have used Illidan to get Eye of Sargeras for merely to destroy Lich King/Ner'zhul, although when that failed, he still wanted of Ner'zhul's destruction. But I very much suspect that the use of Eye of Sargeras would have caused some catastrophic event if succesful

The wardens are loyal but not directly responsible to any other night elves as confirmed in Legion.
Maiev was a former priestess herself so I suspect they can’t deal with her like they would another normal night elf. Also, she has many watchers who hate Tyrande after she killed them to set Illidan free so they would gladly join Maiev. Furthermore, Maiev is an exceptionally skilled warrior so she’s not easily brought down even by Tyrande and Malfurion themselves.
No. The Wardens operate separately from the Night Elf army, and they respond to Maiev only.

There was a side mission on this level to rescue a human paladin. The reward for completing this side mission is the temporary acquisition of a paladin unit. He goes away after this level.
Honestly this game is better than most of the games today.

This is the 2nd time Furion stopped Illidians plan. First, he stopped him from killing Archimonde without even reaching the World Tree by making him leave. 2nd, he stopped him from destroying the Lich King. Really? But at least he is showing that he still loved his brother in the departure.
lol Illidan never tried to kill Archimonde, and he is not strong enough even when he turned into half demon. Also Illidan would have destroyed the entire continent not only lich king, so Malfurion saved many innocents.
