Lightroom's still the go-to; although I'd like to make a full switch to Photoshop eventually for what I really want to do with my editing ;) I also like playing around with Luminar just for kicks. haha
These post production tutorial vids are awesome, Mark. I was a newspaper photographer in the infancy of digital, and we used Photoshop for importing and cropping our images, but we were strictly forbidden from touching anything else. Adjust exposure or breathe on a tone curve, and angry men in ink-stained overalls from the printing facility would be cussing and yelling down the phone at your editor because of the destructive changes made to the images. So as a result, we were professional photographers who knew absolutely nothing about Photoshop editing. Having just gotten back into photography after a fifteen year hiatus, I can't thank you enough for helping bring me up to speed with clear, concise tutorial videos which save me the pain of going through the Adobe user guides. Absolute legend.
I'm an old Navy Photomate and learned the technique of burning and dodging in the darkroom. I've never used it in Lightroom however. Thanks so much for the video, you're a great instructor!
I've only recently discovered your channel, what can I say, Wow Wow Wow. Very clear and consice tutorials that are easy to follow without getting bogged down, with just the right amount of technical stuff. The best channel on the internet for sure. Thank you for taking the time to share.
Your videos have gotten me interested in not depending on CR to process my RAW images, and to reintroduce myself to Lightroom. The range of adjustments in Lightroom really exceed the capabilities you have in CR. Thanks for opening my eyes to it's capabilities and processing potentials. You the man, Mark.
Fantastic tutorial Mark! Been doing graphics for 25 years but when it came to photography I thought being a purist was the way to go and I'm quickly seeing that Pro photographers don't feel that way at all because like you say, you see 3D and your camera is 2D, so we need help it bring out what we saw when we were there. Love it! Thanks mate, you changed my mind.
Great video Mark! I remember it by using the opposite letter - if I'd like to B my image the result will be D and if I'd like to D my image, the result will be B. i.e. 1st letter refers to Burn/Dodge and the result letter refers to Darken/Brighten, respectively.
I really like how you keep your tutorials simple. Too many try to make it look like you need a masters degree in computer science to use Lightroom or Photoshop.
This is probably the best example of dodging and burning on TH-cam, well done. I bought a course from another photographer a while back and he brought up the importance of this as well. He said clients would tell him that his images have something “extra” over the competition and it’s the single change that got him the most work. 👍🏼
I use Lightroom only. You explained dodging and burning so well. I've never used it because I didn't understand it Thanks Mark. I will have to start doing more.
I too have suffered from flat light syndrome. I was aware of the ability of dodging and burning to control focus in an image but the ability of adding texture is an application I haven't explored much. Looks like I've got a new method to add back the texture that I saw when I clicked the shutter. Thanks.
Mark, you are one of the best teachers of photo finishing. You make it look easy and fun. Have been leery of screwing up my pictures. Your pictures are so good, I know you wouldn't use Dodge and Burn if it wasn't the right thing. The change it makes speaks for itself. This is where I am in my development. This video was great timing, by the right instructor. I am convinced. Thank you.
Thanks for his video Mark. I’m not blowing smoke up your skirt when I say you have a way of making things easier to understand than anyone else I follow. Including some of my favorite photographers. Thank you!
Wow. You are seriously my hero Mark. I do a lot of Milky Way shooting in my back yard and I have really struggled with the noise pollution from a city to the south. In just a few minutes messing around, I can tell this is going to be a HUGE help for me. Thank you so much for doing this video.
I worked in an Air Force reconnaissance photo lab back in the 70’s. Remember dodging and burning prints with my hands in the light from a projection printer to bring out shadow detail of high-value target sites. It was amazing what we could do with those techniques.
Great video, explains what some photographers make out to be a dark art in an easily digestible 16 minute session. Thanks for taking the time to put these tutorials out, very much appreciated
That was the most educational VDO I watched for a long time, except yesterdays watching other VDO you posted. Thank you so much for your time sharing your experience with us.
I found your video excellent. This now makes sense after watching numerous confusing so-called tutorials. I use LR exclusively as I find PS too complex. Thank you for making a video that I can understand and use.
I always knew what dodging and burning were, but I never realized how powerful it could be! This video proved that, and is now the thing I am trying to master most! Thanks, Mark, awesome video as per usual, only found your channel about a week ago and I am making my way through all your videos, really inspiring!
I’m always learning from you! I had no idea there were all those adjustment brush presets already built in, like the brush and burn brush. I’ve always just selected the brush and done it manually. Thanks again for opening my eyes!!!!
3rd video in a row that has changed my workflow. Have been quite afraid of this tool but changing the flow has helped to make subtle, less HDR, changes. Thanks again.
Great video. Over the past few months I've really applied this technique to my own photos. It's allowed me to feel more confident in my process but I can now look at others people work and almost reverse engineer what they did as well. Thanks for the video!
Thanks Mark, another nice video. I always like how you talk these things through in a nice straightforward way. One of the things I really appreciate is that you explain the purpose behind what you are trying to achieve rather than just the actual process which really helps bring the skill to life rather than just learning a load of keyboard shortcuts! Nicely done. Also kudos on the walkman on the desk!
Again I learned something new. Have always heard the terms dodge & burn and also like you thought they were above my pay grade but you made this so easy. Never could get my photos to have that pop and thought I was doing something wrong but this is what people are most likely doing. THANKS! Brad
I have always seen the dodge and burn in snapseed but never knew how to use it or when. This enlightened me. This will transform my edits. Thanks mate.
great information and explanation. I've had LR for years and never knew how to effectively used it and never used dodge & burn. I just went and used those tools with a recent photos and wow! Thank you.
Learned something really useful with the hue/colour adjustment, I don't remember seeing anybody touch on that before. I'll have to check Affinity Photo for that option, that's really useful. I think I learn something new from just about all your videos, super helpful! Thanks Mark for all your hard work, it's really appreciated!
This helps me so much I've always heard about dodging and burning, never knew what it was. Thank you so much your video's always help with my photography and post processing.
Very helpful - got this one bookmarked. Planning on going back to my favorite recent landscape from a trip to Ireland and work on some D&B. I always used these tools mainly to fix problems rather than enhancing an image. Thanks for your help. And Oh, I love the lava lamp.
I had the same issue with the terminology as I do not have the context of the film processing. I remember the definition exactly in the same fashion as Mark, Burning a paper will make it black hence darker! Thanks for this lesson and I too had no idea the brush came with a dodge and burn setting.
Great video my friend! Very helpful, as usual. I never really thought to use dodging and burning like this. I'm really glad you put this video up. Also, I really respect that you don't try to be "perfect" in your videos. Many of the other youtube folks always edit out their mistakes, I like that you don't. It's very respectable. Thanks for the video Mark, see you next week!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This was so helpful! I've always wondered how to dodge and burn digitally and now I know. I even learned a couple of other things by watching you click on different panels. Thanks again!
This really helped me a lot understanding the power behind this technique. I am just trying it out on my most recent photos and I am very pleased with the results. Thank you!
Mark, thank you very much for this great tutorial. I just came back from a trip in French Brittany where I made tons of pictures and I can’t wait to dodge and burn ;-)
Mark another great video. This is SO very helpful. I am in process of moving over to LR from ACR- Adobe Camera Raw and have been a bit intimidated but LR just has these great features. I didnt know about the dodge and burn. I try to give my photos punch with the basic panel and i can see why i have been frustrated - dodge and burn brings it to a whole new level. Superbly informative video Mark. You've magically shared some useful and very crucial tips on post processing. Takes me back to the days of film. Thanks man. Well done.
How do you know what I need to learn all the time? :D Perfect timing, awesome vid, very helpful. You grown to be my favourite photograph channel. I love your relaxed style and that you make these without unnecessary talk or intros and fancy stuff. Simple straightforward content. Thank You Mark!
thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU! :) This tutorial breaks dodging & burning down into a simplistic approach I can actually apply to my photos. I had no clue the huge impact dodging/burning can have on photos. I really appreciate your videos, you have taken seemingly complex techniques and made them doable. Many editing tutorials are so confusing that I don't come away with much, if anything in the end.
I really enjoyed this; I often come across flat images of mine that I couldn't really figure out how to turn into better images, and now I know! One small feedback: there are so many tiny detailed settings in Lightroom that it would be good to quickly explain as you apply it what they mean...for example: what is flow and why do you want it at 50, why is the feather at 100 (that one I know, but others may not)...keep up the great work Mark!
Nice video dear Mark thank you. ❤ I totally agree with all what you said, especially the second reason, it's sometimes so important to emphasize the difference between the light areas and the shadow areas. I try to understand where is the light coming from and thus I can decide where to dodge and where ti burn.
Thanks Mark for a very informative video you explained the terms very well as i have always found the terms confusing and i had no idea that those tools were even in Lightroom Thank you once again
Thanks for clarifying the definitions of Burning (darken) and Dodging (lighten) in an easy to remember fashion. I also would not use this tool because I did not understand it. Some of my friends use it to enhance portraits, also. I will try to use this more now that I have a better understanding of the purpose.
Thank-you. I didn't know there was a Dodge and Burn option in Lightroom. I always used the Adjustment Brush. And then I'd go to Photoshop if I felt I need to actually use the Dodge and Burn. Thanks again.
What photo editing software are you most comfortable with?
Mostly Lightroom, learning Photoshop
Mark Denney Lightroom/Photoshop.
Mark Denney LR/PS using TKAction luminosity masks

Such lucid explanation, Mark. And I've said it before, the total absence of (needless) background musak is so very refreshing.

Great stuff again!! Always wondered about dodge and burn. I guess it’s subjective as to what gets dodged and burned but I’ll figure it out
Yep it's all up to what you think looks best, but the general guideline is that you burn the shadows and dodge the highlights.
Great tutorial Mark, straightforward and no-nonsense! Liked and Saved for re-cap reference 👍
