  • I tested the Akai Pro AMX and AFX controllers for Serato DJ. The AMX is the real controller that activates Serato DJ and the AFX adds extra functionality. Check out all the features as I go through all the pro's and cons.
    01:47 AMX
    11:33 AFX
    I want to thank Tone Control for letting me use the AMX and AFX for this review. For more info about Tone Control and all their equipment check out www.tonecontrol.eu

    +djtlm in the AMX review you said there was no way to nudge/pitch-bend on the AMX but you can nudge/pitch-bend he same way you move the track back and forth to set que points. While the track is playing hold down the search button for the playing deck you want to adjust and turn the Browse knob clockwise or counter clockwise to nudge the track ahead or pull it back. Just an FYI for anyone interested.

    I own both these units and the main reason I believe the cross fader 'feels' so bad is not because of the cut-in distance but rather that it's not affecting the audio directly. The AMX is a software controller so therefore you get the latency inherent with the 'cuts' being processed by Serato's internal software mixer. I've had the innofader removed and even followed the steps on the innofader website to manually adjust the cut in distance using the Micro-switch on the back of the innofader. This makes no difference. It's still 'laggy' to react. Native Instruments managed to get it right with the Z2. Shame Akai didn't with Serato. Great review, keep up the good work.

      +Tim Pell That's a possibility too. I've had better results scratching with the DDJ-SB and the Numark Mixtrack Pro2 and those faders were nowhere near as good as the innofader so you could be right and then it's not the innofader that is at fault.

    On the AFX, if you select deck 1/2 and you are in the sp6 mode, you can control the volume with the big knob in the middle!

    The AMX and AFX is worth the purchase. I only use this for very small events but it lived up to what I needed it for!!! Using the SP1 instead of the AFX. Never thought of it!!! Might have to look into that. Great review!!!

    You did a great review as always. Good job TLM! I got the AMX a month ago in order to use my old Technics sl1210 in DVS mode with Serato DJ and I'm pretty happy with that because I can do my mixes and my scratches and it's a lot of fun. As far as the mini Innofader , even if I'm not a pro scratch Dj, I can say that I have better feelings with the crossfader of my DDJ SB so I totally agree with you. I raccomend this unit to people like me who want a good quality usb mixer to use DVS with Serato and stay on a budget. I can't wait to use my new set up in the next SSS5! I hope you will do a tutorial on the Serato Flip soon, I need that. Thank you and Happy New Year!

    Can be used as a serato AI, connect one side of the output to the input of a bigger mixer and the headphone line using the Jackpin to rca cable to the other input of the bigger mixer and adjust the sound from the AMX

    Thanks for this info. I finally decided to get another controller for FX. My current controller had buttons that miss hit, which caused too many errors. It was also very easy to understand you. Some other vids had guys with very thick accents!!

    I'm using the AMX for half a year now and I really have to say that I like it. Sure the height is a little difficulty but you get used to the fact that it is lower than your turntables.
    Talking about the Crossfader I haven't had any issues with it except that it will reopen shortly sometimes if you put a little too much pressure on it to one side. Concerning the scratches I have no problems with it but I'm new to scratching so my scratches are not yet that good anyway and I have no real comparison...
    But as @djTLM said you will need an extra controller if you want to mix with the AMX properly (unless you want to use your keyboard for that). I'm using a Novation Launchpad S which I have mapped to control the import things like cue points and loops and with that I'm good to go

    I have the AMX and it's feels like the my scratches lag. But from the videos i've seen there seem to be no issues. I also have ddj sr, and scratching sounds on point. I've seen the AMX used a soundcard for a dj tech mixer. enjoy the videos keep them coming.

    Hi DJTLM,
    On 5m30s, you are completely right that doing the loop roll with touch activated, is very hard NOT to touch the bass kill - since everything is so small.
    Also agreed that out-of-the-box, the AMX really needs the AFX for a lot of missing functionality, namely hot cues, loops, etc.
    However I really really like the ultra-portability of a single unit to play in Planes, Hotel, by the pool, etc.
    This is why I bought the AMX on purpose just to use this “All-in-one” Traktor mapping: 4x decks, 6x hot cues, Loops, 5x insta-FX pages, “super cross fader”.
    Also, my own upcoming extension adds Beatjump, Loop roll, Selectable FX control, Zoom + Layout changes, Library adv browsing.
    maps.djtechtools.com/mappings/4397
    keep up the great work!

    I enjoyed your review but i was a little disappointed you didn't include some footage using the DVS with your turntables. I agree with your opinion on switching back and forth between decks 1/3 & 2/4. I've always had dedicated control between right and left deck so I picked up the Akai AMX & 2x AFX. Works great and buying two AFX cost just slightly more than the Pioneer DDJ-SP1 you suggested with the upside of having some additional great features that come with the AFX. I like the digital display showing the parameters for the loop and fx. Touch-activated fx are are handy and a sold feature at any price point. I really wish they worked in a way to shuffle between sample banks so I could keep my hands off the laptop (Slightly annoying). I've also been using the two AFX controllers at the clubs I spin at to give the gear they provide on sight more of a controller type functionality and again keep my hands of the laptop. luv what your doing for the DJ community with your channel. Bless

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dj R-Les I had some turntable footage, but it was lost. But in all honesty, it didn't add any extra info. You just saw me control the music with the turntables like with any dvs.
      Did you have any issues with the crossfader?

    • @djr-les6858
      @djr-les6858 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No cross fader issues for me so far but I'm not nearly as advanced as you are in scratching. In all honesty I'm still learning and/or trying to perfect some of the advanced technical scratches so I may not even realize that it's not doing what it's supposed to. If it's not working right I've probable just been blaming myself. I have the DDJ-SX, NS7II and 1200's w/the AMX/AFX set up. It all seems pretty much the same to me. On another note, I'd like to see a Audio-Technica AT-LP120 review. I'm curious how they compare to other proven turntables and clearly you have the skill and experience to make a valid assessment. Please do a review of you can get your hands on them. Thanks and keep doing what your doing. Much appreciated

  • @AveMcree
    @AveMcree 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    10:00 btw, if you're a right handed scratcher, the fader has a bug in it where your cuts won't be as crisp :( I forgot about that. I scratch with both but my right hand is my stronger hand... It sucks that AKAI won't address this 2 year old problem

    I have this setup and it's only good for mixing. When I used to do heavy scratching it would switch to hamster (and when I was in hamster it would switch to normal). I used to get a lot of audio drop outs as well. I've posted a lot in the Serato forum concerning this unit so I gave up on it a long time ago and switched to the Rane 62. Going to sell the AMX but keep the AFX.

    A DJ Buddy buyed the AMX and we did a scratch session. I also noticed that i have big problems scratching with the AMX. But its a simple physical reason. It's all about the size of this Controler.
    Me ( and u to ) are mixing mainly on mixer with a bigger size and weight. The AMX is very small and light in comparison to other Controllers and Mixers. This caused a few Problems.
    First of all, u need to set something under the AMX to get it higher. You got the perfect high? Yeah but it still have some space between the Controller and the Turntable. So what happens while you scratching? The Mixer is moving a bit to the left and right wile the fader movements.
    Lets pretend you got the perfect high and you can gap this space btw the controller and Turntable ( I found out that the Ortofon Case fits perfectly for that ). There is still a problem. The Controller can still Moving Upwards between the Turntables. On your scratching style ( I'm speaking to you DJ TLM ) it might happen, that u can Pop the AMX out completely btw the Turntables.
    The Way i scratch is, to lay Down the Fader Hand on the Mixer and work with my Fingers. So there is also missing space on the Controler for me ( and maybe other DJ's to ) to scratch smoothly.
    I Just wanted to give an answer for you, why you have some problems scratching with this controller. I might be wrong on your case, but that's what i noticed for Myself.
    Thank you DJ TLM to do so much videos helping all of us DJ ( regardless newcomer or advanced DJ's ). I enjoy every single of your video even if it's helpfull for me or not. It's just because sometimes i see myself on the same situation :)

    Nice video/review. Thanks for sharing. Hey, when it comes to your DJM900SRT sure it may not be labelled as a HiP-Hop scratch mixer but since pioneer designed it for Serato they did put a great scratch fader in the mixer. It will even take up to 10million cuts/crabs/flares etc etc before the fader starts to crap out on you. It's not an INNO fader & I forget what they call it but it's an incredible scratch fader. I'm sure that's the reason you don't have any problems cutting on it. Lol.

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Tony Draper Yeah, the fader on the 900SRT is nice, but it's still nowhere near as sharp as my DJM909 or my PMC05PRO4 or my DJM-S9. But the SRT's fader is a lot more suitable for scratching than the fader in the normal 900

    • @Djtonydraper
      @Djtonydraper 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +djTLMtv
      Oh yea.I totally agree.To this day I feel that my 909 has the best fader feel I've ever used & it's the reason I'll never get rid of it.Also the bumpers on the S9 are what make that fader feel so dope to me(no clicking).I love the S9 & so glad I finally got my hands on one.It's funny though cause when your a scratch Dj/turntablist or whatever you wanna call us we can always get down no matter what kind of fader we are on as long as the fader is decent.Thing is they all feel a bit different & we always need to adjust to the fader no matter what.I can be on my STR & move over to my S9/909 & I always need to adjust.I may need to speed my fader hand up or down to get the same results, especially when it comes to flares.Hey man I heard the S9 & SRT faders are the same,minus the bumpers on the SRT.This could be 100% false but I'm gonna look into it &see if that's really true.Keep up the good work bro.I always enjoy your videos & love the fact you are helping the younger generation.

    Amazing video as always can you talk about Serato flip and I guess other expansion packs for Serato? Do you think there necessary? Pros and cons? When djaying how often do you use the effects? Another question do you know if there is any issue if you have Traktor as well as Serato on the same laptop? And sorry final questions can you use any like launch pads with Serato? Is it possible to hook up the maschine studio with Serato? What are your thoughts about maschine studio/Maschine. Do you think you could make a video of you Going through a basic set you would do live. And walking through how and what you did. I'm a beginner DJ and I just know the basic stuff. But when I find myself watching videos on TH-cam of people's mixes I constantly and asking how they did that, or what they just did right there. Sometimes I can figure it out, but I'm thinking the only way to find this out is maybe a one on one session with a DJ. But I can't seem to find anyone at the moment. Maybe I need to do your skype lessons you were talking about. But maybe even a video of you walking through your lives sets would be helpful. Just a thought hope it made sense... Thanks!

    it's interesting that during certain actions (e.g. @ 4:45 during the touch-capacitive eq kills), SDJ is displaying continuous usb dropouts (watch the right hand corner of the SDJ screen). I'm having similar issues on various setups (SL2, Pioneer S9, Akai AMX), even though I'm on a Core i5 with 12 GB ram and SSD. I don't have this in SSL. I really want to like SDJ, but because of this unexplainable issues, SSL is still my primary choice.

    This was very helpful! But I'd like your advice...
    I’m a novice DJ-I work with 2 technics and a basic mixer with no pads, so all of my cues/loops/hot keys/sp6/effects are done through my computer and/or mouse. I’ve been agonizing between the Neon Reloop and the AKAI AFX, but I truly can’t decide which would be better for me. All I keep hearing and seeing about each one is they do basically the same things but “this one is so much better in this area than the other”.
    I’m only going to buy one for now (I realize some DJs use both in their setup), so any advice/guidance regarding which I should get immediately would be more than helpful…

    Hey DJ TLM, I am just starting in the sense that I will be able to buy gear soon. I have been practicing on friends' controllers for house parties; at home, I mapped Virtual DJ functions to keys on my computer keyboard, and it actually works well enough that I have recorded professional sounding mixes. I'm looking to buy the AMX and the DDJ-SP1 as a combo to start working with Serato for a semi-professional modular setup. What's your opinion on that particular combo? It seems like I'd have all the functions needed to perform, apart from pitch control. Sync would have to be my friend until I could work up more cash for something else.

    Ive had same issues plus a few more with my AMX bro. It definitely seems to miss clicks in hamster scratch and transforming I've found.. Sometime's the fader bleeds into the other channel, its like the hamster is on but only one side. Ive just started trying out at a few gigs and just last weekend the master volume dropped by half for no reason and only corrected when i slightly touched the volume control. Same thing happened a couple of times in the headphones and with headphone volume knob.

    Toss in a lightening cable and the ability to charge the ipad and I'd be all over using the AMX with djay 2 and/or DJ Player.

    hi there!! nice job !! just recently discovered your channel = ) = )
    i just bought the AFX, do you know a way to scroll through the waveform song, but really precesily??
    I can't find the way to do it....
    I mean, the typycal spot, you have your cue point outside the begginning of your wavefor, and you would normally adjust it with your mouse to the beginning....
    is that posible to move through small portions precesily with this AFX???
    thanks again, for your help and all your work!!

    @djTLMtv I am having trouble setting up my DVS, I have 2 pioneer cdj800mk1's, and the akai amx, can you show us how to set it up with cdj's and vinyls? or do you have any troubleshooting tips?

  • @mhaluuun93
    @mhaluuun93 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you get the Akai AMX and some Serato controls (vinyl), do you really need to buy the DVS Expansion pack? Because I brought my laptop over to a friend's once, they had a Serato Mixer (Mixars Duo), I plugged the USB into my computer, and it didn't say I needed to purchase the DVS expansion pack... I just had to download the right drive in order for the mixer to be connected to my laptop correctly.

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The AMX is seen a a controller and dvs is an extra feature. The mixars duo is a serato mixer. So the mixars is meant for dvs and will work out of the box.
      At least, that’s what I think.

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And yes, with the AMX you will need that expansion to make dvs work

    Hi! Sorry for commenting on video from 4 years ago, but I'm having issue with this product. It happens to have random master volume drop out, and random crossfader reverse. Do you know any solutions? I sent it to the company, but they gave me back saying there isn't any problem.

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late reply. I have no idea what the problem could be. Drop outs could have something to do with your computer and the buffer size in the software, but random reverse on the crossfader is weird indeed

    I have been thinking about getting this as something i can take say on a plan and i guess to "scratch rudiments." and to maybe do some small parties when I travel. In your own opinion do you think this does a good enough job or would i be better off using something like a SB or something similar. to buy this and the AFX would be around the price of buy an SR but I do want to keep my backpack with just my computer and a controler. (i usualy fill it with nik naks when i go on holiday.

    Can you adjust the pitch in REL and ABS modes. Shift and gain only works in INT mode. if so.. How?

  • @12spike
    @12spike 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you try the crossfader with the record in thru mode? I wonder if that would have made any difference to see where the delay could have been. I also found I had to decrease my usb latency down as much as possible to crisp up the response, but what specs are your mac? I have a PC intel i7 with 8 gigs of RAM.

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +12spike No, I didn't try thru mode (good idea). The latency shouldn't be a problem. It works fine with my 900SRT. But maybe the fact that the AMX is usb powered somehow causes more latency, even though I haven't had that problem with any other controller (SB, SR, NV, NS7II, etc)

    Quick question: I caught some Reloop 8000s on the cheap, will they match up well with the AMX and I can skip on the AFX? I'm just really mixing stuff and not doing a lot of scratching.

    Would I need a soundcard like the Denson S1 for this to work or will the AMX rub without one using vinyl?

  • @MrSirjamalot
    @MrSirjamalot 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When I was using traktor, I had a case for my traktor control x1 that gave it some height to the mixer. Maybe that could work with these units. They look about the same size. Also I have an NS7 could the AFX possibly work with it?

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @MrSirjamalot

      +djTLMtv I checked out the AMX and decided on the Reloop Neon because the pads are a lot bigger than on the AMX and it works great with my NS7.
