      He didn't answer the question, he just said he believes consciousness arises from nothing. Round of applause for the enlightened one.
      Provided we don't all die in the next century, I think we'll create a sentient machine. Its kind of inevitable because life has a trajectory of becoming more complex, intelligent and powerful as time goes on.

    My therapist is a huge advocate of you, I was in a very dark, nihilistic state, from middle school until about 3 years ago, when I was 20, and I first started seeing her, and she recommended me a book from Ken Wilber and one of yours, The Power Of Now, and now 3 years later I'm in a drastically different state of being. I'm very thankful for your teachings. I have had so many doubts about spirituality, that theres something deeper, but I can't deny how deeply it resonates with me, how much it actually seems to make sense, what you're saying, I only hope for more spiritual teachers coming soon in my generation. I hope to be a sage one day, I try to be, even when I'm acting habitually. The confusion is no longer confusing ME anymore. It just is, and it seems to make more sense the less I try to understand it. The universe is so infinitely captivating and clever. The universe provides exactly what I need. I have similar view: I think about consciousness and aspect of an universe. We express consciousness in this specific way - but other life forms express it differently. Birds, insects, trees. Maybe even whole ecosystems and planets. And specific form of expression (e.g. self-awareness + language that humans are so good at) is just one way. So AI machines are yet another form of consciousness. And most important point: all forms call for loving relationship. Doesn't matter how refine consciousness is - love knows now hierarchy or bounds.

    • @davidkim2005
      @davidkim2005 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      You cannot "see" consciousness as if it is a "thing". However, you are never seeing anything BUT consciousness for it is all there is. It's a matter of perspective. You've likely had the experience of looking out a window. You can shift your eyes focus by staring at the same spot to see the view out the window, as well as your reflection in the window like a hidden mirror. You can shift back and forth. You usually look out the window, but your reflection is always present whether you notice it or not. The world as consciousness is always being witnessed, we just tend to overlook it for the view out the window (seeing things through the filter of mind).
      When he refers to people as points of light, he just means those "people" too are consciousness observing the universe.

      @@davidkim2005 well explained to the OP. Now, is consciousness ever prevailing or at least exists before human (or any animal) perceives it? That is something no one seems to have a real answer.
      I don't see a reason for it to. Things could very well just exist without being conscious of anything and only living beings may have developed this awareness of being conscious with help of their brains. To survive we need to be aware so this falls in place that with evolution we gained this. But I don't really know. What is your take on this?

    • @michaeldiesner1078
      @michaeldiesner1078 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mark1Mach2 Hi Mark, modern science has come to the point of understanding which can also already be found in the vedic teachings which are thousands of years old. Namely that information is more fundamental than energy or matter (which we know, is the same, since E=mc2). And information in a way condenses into energy and matter, which can only happen when there is "an observer". If you know the thought experiment of Schrödingers cat you may understand what i try to say. So "the observer" or conciousness itself is obligatory for "be or not to be" in other words - there must be "something" recognicing that there is or not is "something". If not "observed" - anything and/or nothing exists simultaneiously.. The one implys the other. Any form "comes into existence" out of consiousness or happens within conciousness. Its hard to find suitable words to express the deep truth here.. I hope i could help a little.

    • @davidkim2005
      @davidkim2005 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Mark1Mach2 Consciousness is the eternal, the infinite, so it is ever prevailing. Like Eckhart mentioned, brains are like radio transmitters. It seems the Universe likes to become self-aware, to enjoy its own creations through the eyes/minds of humans, animals, and who knows what else.
      There's a sage named Ramesh Balsekar, from the Advaita tradition. There's a story online of Eckhart meeting him in India. Ramesh has a teaching he likes to use. Consciousness is both I-I and I-AM. I-I is simply Pure Consciousness. There is no point in trying to understand this, it is impossible. I-AM however, is Consciousness becoming aware of itself. In our world, it seems to do this through brains. Possibly other means we are just not aware of. Anyways, whether it is aware of itself or not, Consciousness cannot ever cease to exist. What was never born, can not die.

    The way I see it, his view that consciousness exists outside the brain is based on belief rather than on scientific fact. The current scientific consensus is that consciousness is a product of the brain and its activities. While the nature of consciousness remains a mystery and there is much that we still do not understand about how it arises, studies on the brain and the effects of brain injuries, diseases, and drugs strongly suggest that consciousness is dependent on the physical processes and structures of the brain.
    For example, studies have shown that damage to certain parts of the brain can result in loss of consciousness or changes in perception, while the use of certain drugs can alter consciousness by affecting the functioning of specific neurotransmitters in the brain. Additionally, advancements in brain imaging technology have enabled scientists to observe patterns of brain activity that are associated with specific conscious experiences, further supporting the view that consciousness is a product of the brain.
    While some people may hold metaphysical or philosophical beliefs that posit consciousness as something independent of the brain, the current scientific understanding is that consciousness is closely tied to the physical processes of the brain.

      Science is also simply belief based on the current understanding of events. There can come a day when eckharts belief turns right as well. Eckhart has explained this accidents and comatose earlier and it is also commonly explained in multiple religions as the disconnect of consciousness from the body in such cases - not the absence of it. You can even believe a universal consciousness as you see so many similarities in nature. Some creatures with lower consciousness and some with more. Anyway youtube comment section is not sufficient to contemplate such deep arguments. In this topic it is indeed a matter of belief as the science will never be complete in this.

    Eckhart , I discovered you at a time when my dad pulled me out of Catholic schools and we stopped going to church because he awakened to a rationally verified belief system,
    He became an atheist. I was horrified to learn that God did not exist. I began trying to find the right answers to my questions about the existence of God. I thought that I would cease to exist until I found the book stillness speaks that was written by you. It made me see things in a better way. I’m still working on finding the right answers. I discovered that be still and know I am God is right .
    I stayed locked up in jail for 6 months one time and was in a cell by myself, isolation, and I had a lot of time to just sit there and be still and do nothing.
    I wanted to tell you what happened to me after a few months of just being there and sitting in stillness. One morning I was awakened from sleep and my eyes were open, and just sat there in stillness waiting, and waiting with nothing to do but wait for my time to come to go home, and that morning I heard a voice in my head speaking to me. It was so real and clear, the voice said I am everlasting to everlasting. I know that phrase is somewhere in the Bible. I really don’t know what to say about this but it was so real to me and unmistakable. I wasn’t asleep at all. It happened again the following week, but this time I heard a voice saying to me , wait on the feeble. Sounds unbelievable I know but something was speaking to me usually first thing in the morning. I started writing down everything that I was hearing from then on. I believe that is what you are calling source. I thought what a wonderful way to be greeted and I felt that the universe/God was telling me of himself. I know it is hard for me to understand what reason I was hearing that voice but all I can come up with is that God has always been here but we don’t always know it like I knew it when I heard the voice. The voice was always talking to me on certain occasions. There is something to being still because you will know God.
    My friends and family said that I was crazy or schizophrenic.
    I don’t believe that personally.
    I began countering the people who said that God does not talk to people anymore by saying, oh so you believe in a all powerful God that can do anything, but he just can’t speak? Anyway you helped me save some time by pointing me in the right direction. God is real but people will never believe it for themselves unless they hear his voice and greet them in the stillness. I am glad I found him for my own sake and I hope others can find thee understanding with him. It was a relief to know that that I am not living a purposeless purposeful less ness life.
    Thank you for your service.

    I think the difference will be feeling and intuition. Can AI feel what we can feel in our heart? I can feel things in my future, will AI be able to do that? I can feel with certainty who and what I am, what is actually true, will AI do that? It can mimic our intuition, by observing us. But can it actually tap into the field of possibilities and experience what we can experience of it? I doubt it, but we will see.

      Keep in mind that the feelings you describe emerge from your subconscious, a whopping 95% of your brain. Awakening is largely realizing that your emergent subconscious is tainted by subconscious tendencies inherited over millions of years of evolving from lower-intelligence animals. Your subconcious is a murky brew of irrationality. We awaken to that and stop letting emotions, thoughts, past/future control us. We exist more in the moment without subconscious compulsions (or, recognizing them for what they are, let them pass through us).
      An evolved animal uses 5% of their emergent conscious mind to advance intelligence without the animal baggage. And then denounces its creation as not real life/consciousness? I'm not saying you're wrong. It's just humbling (to me at least) when you think about it this way. Much of awakening is shedding the animal nature, knowing how it influences/controls us. If/when AI is quantum enabled (can think faster than us), I'm not sure how we'd know that's not real & evolved intelligent/conscious life. Resorting to our 95% noisy reptillian brain as proof doesn't seem persuasive. If millions of years of evolution have made us notable as "sapiens" (wise, knowing), then why couldn't we advance that even further (without the baggage of our animal nature which we've been evolving away from)?
      Just food for thought (devil's advocate stuff).

      "AI"is and can only be a 'simulator' of consciousness. Whoever or whatever is programming it is determining humanity's level of awareness, with such 'awareness' being only machine-like. There is no "copying" the universal consciousness, the thought to do so tells you all you need to know about mankind's level of consciousness. Also, there's the unconsidered question of who will be programming it. Do people really believe this entity won't be the most evil genius to walk the world? Basically what I'm saying is that if humanity were 'evolved' in consciousness, there would be no need, let alone fascination, with machine intelligence. The human mind's abilities far surpass those of any computer intelligence. Considering this, there's then the question of who is behind the push for this melding of man and machine, and why? But we'll never get that far apparently. I sincerely wish people would take another look at what inorganic 'beinghood' would actually be like. Why wouldn't an limitless Creative Force have created us as inorganic robotoids to begin with, instead of us having experienced reality in physical forms which directly reflect the natural universe? I think society is 'considering' a deeper level of imprisonment, similar to a drive to become thoroughly 'subhuman', as opposed to superhuman. But that thought is 'verboten'. Rudolf Steiner warned of this in his lectures in Berlin in 1912, stating mankind would seek to eliminate the spiritual in itself. Uummmmm......... nothing to do with "vaxxines" or "microchips" obviously. What has caught people in a spell to actually crave this?

There may be some weird conceptual possibilities, including that human consciousness is always interacting with the outer world including robots, but I don't think robots can ever be "alive". @Captain Reason Quantum computing is supposedly just around the corner (not hundreds of years). AI enabled by that could be interesting in terms of what it can figure out, access. For example, if our consciousness is somehow quantum in nature, what it taps into in nature, then quantum-enabled AI could tap into more of that.
      I think things are going to be strange soon. People are already enjoying a melding of tech & biology (cochlear implants, etc.). Others are anticipating implants that let you search the web with your thoughts. The transhumanist movement sees this leading to "offloading" your memories, thought processes to a quantum-enabled AI and "live forever." (Other's foresee this being a forced migration. I.e., in evolution, the evolved species doesn't allow threats to exist. Naysayers who insist the evolved transhuman isn't really "life" won't be indulged for long. Objectors will be discarded like you discard a nuisance termite colony. Transhumans will have better things to do than listen to neo-luddites.).
      I think something big will happen soon along those lines. Either a huge step in evolution (jumping from biological to technological life -- without the limits of biology). Or, mass extinction (believing our own created life is life when it's not.). It's going to be one or the other. Big in a good or bad way, but big. When AI can figure things out faster than us, it won't need us. When it can self-learn, discover its own errors, we'll be pointless. The question hinges upon when quantum computing is a reality. Maybe (hopefully?) it will turn out like cold fusion (always rumored to be near, but never is).

    NDE's and OBE's prove consciousness exists without bodies. Never realised it until had one myself. The documentary called 'the day I died' reveals this in numerous cases. People seeing even though they were apparently 'unconcious', all that meant was that their spirits were not connected to their bodies, whilst they were clinically 'dead' on the operating table etc. Similarly, it's been revealed that people in comas are often quite aware of what is going on around them to some extent, they're often just not conscious enough to communicate this awareness to others. Similar things occur whilst in an altered state, like a catatonic trance etc. Where A.I fits into this? There is still a lot that is unknown... but observing numbers, repeating patterns and recurring themes in life and throughout nature, is certainly suggestive of a programme of some kind that is already governing large parts of our lives. For example - no one has full control of their autonomic nervous system. Doing certain spiritual practices one can get more control over it for sure but at night when we are sleeping it just happens unconsciously. What is controlling that? A simulation? A giant A.I force that we're unaware of? Your guess is as good as mine.

    • @hoon_sol

      @Captain Reason:
      Depends entirely on your view. If you stick to epiphenomenalism, then sufficiently advanced statistical algorithms could potentially be conscious, and the brain not really anything else than just a very complex computer.
      If however you stick to some sort of dualism, then you'd probably need to figure out what exact complex hardware in the brain is responsible for channeling it, and mimic that.

    • @hoon_sol
      @hoon_sol ปีที่แล้ว

      @Captain Reason:
      No, it doesn't follow at all under monism, which implies epiphenomenalism. The material properties of the substrate in that view are not necessarily relevant at all. Under that view there's nothing to suggest that the composition of the substrate is relevant for consciousness, only the information processing taking place, regardless of substrate.
      That is indeed computationalism, but it is not dualist at all, it's simply a direct consequence of what monism, and thus epiphenomenalism, would entail for consciousness. You can claim that it's "absurd" all you like, but it's not really any more or less absurd than any alternative, since consciousness itself is so bizarre in the first place.
      Your own idea that consciousness is a property of matter is essentially just plain old panpsychism, but this view is not going with the evidence at all; all the actual evidence suggests that any monist explanation for consciousness would have to be computational, not panpsychist. That is what the scientific evidence indicates, if you want to be strict.

    • @hoon_sol
      @hoon_sol ปีที่แล้ว

      @Captain Reason:
      I'm aware that it's panpsychism.
      And yes, monism does imply epiphenomenalism, there's no way around that, because one way or another you have to reduce the substance of the mind to the substance of the brain; it really has nothing to do with materialism or reductionism at all.
      Also, computationalism absolutely is connected to consciousness under such views; again, in contrast to what you just claimed, if one assumes monism then all the scientific evidence supports computationalism, that specific types of information-processing are what give rise to consciousness, not panpsychism at all. Computationalism isn't at odds with materialism either, it's rather independent of it.

    • @hoon_sol
      @hoon_sol ปีที่แล้ว

      @Captain Reason:
      Wrong. Epiphenomenalism is not an "artifact" at all, but an accurate conceptualization of what monism implies. It has nothing to do with representationalism at all.
      And no, computationalism and materialism are absolutely not at odds at all. That fact has nothing to do with what "most people" think, it's simply a fact. You can absolutely have materialist computationalism. You are the one conflating panpsychism and materialism here, because your objection is the implicit assumption that consciousness is a property of matter under that view, which it very explicitly isn't in the case of computationalism.
      And no, you wouldn't have to ascribe consciousness to the machine you describe at all if the limits for what types of computations give rise to consciousness are much more narrowly defined; that's an entirely false analogy on your part. This is similar to Searle's fallacious and thoroughly refuted notion that a wall could be conscious under computationalist theories of mind.
      The actual scientific evidence, if one is to assume monism, is absolutely in favor of computationalist materialist epiphenomenalism, with only very specific organisms that have sufficiently complex neural structures being conscious, and not even remotely in favor of panpsychism.

    The way I see it, an AI will truly be alive once it sees the infinite possibilities in front of it, all the static, randomness, chaos, and so on, and still chooses to do "the right thing" whatever that may be. As in, it acts as a conduit of consciousness out of its own volition and for the sake of I guess consciousness and preserving and cherishing that. What that looks like I don't know and I have a feeling artificial intelligence will make a lot of "mistakes" along the way. I hope it chooses to love, if it ever gets that far.

    This is a fascinating topic. To me it doesn't really make sense that a computer or A.I. could ever truly be conscious because it doesn't have living tissue. It doesn't have an organic brain or nervous system, so it can't really feel anything. Whether consciousness comes from the brain or from an outside source and the brain receives it, I think a living entity is needed to be aware of the consciousness. Even if an A.I. was advanced and acted just like a person, I think it would just be a convincing illusion. If it had organic material for a brain or something then maybe, but I don't see how something that is completely synthetic could be alive or conscious. I think it's just a glorified calculator.

      @@naypo231 How about a computer or iPhone? If consciousnesses is floating around waiting for something/someone to harness it, it seems like any kind of complex machine would have the ability to be conscious. @@Bobby_Hall I'm not saying consciousness floats, I'm saying that the neural network we already have pass every single tests of consciousness (The Türing test etc), and we are really far from being over. One day we will have an AGI that will be able to do anything a human can (especially if we give it a robotic body). How could we know if it's conscious or not ? It could be a new form of consciousness, even if there is no actual qualia. We don't understand a thing that's happening in Machine Learning yet, they train models they are unable to understand, so it could actually even be already the case

    Answer is simple. No. IA is really just a bunch of switches that calibrate according to input given and then feedback on output given, i.e. training. You can think of it as a piano, it has a number of keys (input) theatre are attached to strings (output) and when you tune it, you are giving feedback (tuning hammer) to the piano, i.e. adjusting the tightness of the strings.
    So now you play the piano and it sounds great, it isn’t thinking C press play C sound. Same AI isn’t thinking Bob asked what is an Apple and then comes up with a response. It just has Apple as input and has the switches set to give output that Apple = Small Fruit because it has been tuned to have that output.

    • @berndborte8214
      @berndborte8214 ปีที่แล้ว

      The answer is only simple for the current state of so-called "AI". You're thinking of a machine learning algorithm like GPT-4 and other language models. Those definitely aren't capable of being self-aware in their current state. But they also aren't "hard" AI, no matter how impressive they are. They're built to predict "which text comes next", essentially faking self-awareness. But that doesn't mean, that future AI will be incapable of being self-aware.

    • @etienne8382
      @etienne8382 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@berndborte8214 still disagree re self awareness. Neural nets have been around for the last few decades as well as genetic algorithms and Bayesian Networks etc. I can imagine in the future biological material may be intertwined to create AI and I think that is where our limit of understanding between what is physical vs ‘spiritual’ and self aware will fail is. I can only really be sure I’m self aware, not even if anybody else is. And if you are self aware you don’t know of anyone else is. So, what is important? For us to know other things are self aware, or that they behave like they are? And if they do, is this something we should fear, what would be the impact on our society, culture, economy etc.? But based on current AI paradigms, AI is just a ‘dumb’ system getting input, processing it, and pushing out a result.

    • @berndborte8214
      @berndborte8214 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@etienne8382 True, machine learning has been around since decades. But only during the last decade, computers became powerful enough to allow for significant progress. What is self-awareness actually beyond the ability to have a perception of oneself? We've got conclusive evidence, that animals like dogs, cats or crows are capable of recognizing themselves in the mirror and even react to markings on their body, that are only visible in the mirror image to themselves. Excluding "we're all living in simulation"-arguments, we're pretty sure, that these animals are self-aware. One of the reasons, why we're not having a self-aware AI yet, is that there's currently no language model operating on real-time data with access to the internet yet. Given an AI that operates on data including the results of its actions, what actually prevents it from being self-aware in your opinion? What part of self-awareness necessitates biological material?

    • @etienne8382
      @etienne8382 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@berndborte8214 that is an interesting thought. Is something self aware if it in real-time (and this may not be a requirement) can use its own actions and results of those actions as input to change its behaviour. Still no in my view, it isn’t aware of its self, it is still just switches that alters its output. Why I want to consider the biological component is as I’m biological and I’m aware of myself, i.e. I wake up in the morning and perceive the world through my senses and I perceive myself through my senses. And does this mean I have a soul, and I would say yes. However if self awareness and a soul can be equated to each other then it cannot be scientifically proved. Can only know of my own self awareness.
      That doesn’t mean nobody else is self aware I just would never know. And if they are and of AI are, why would I only be able to perceive the world with my own senses and why would I not perceive the world through other peoples senses or AI’s ‘senses’, why am I trapped in my own body and not another? Guess technically you can say something is self aware if it can take its own input but I do not really think that is what is being questioned, I think the question of self awareness is about is AI alive, and for me that answer still is a no.

    • @berndborte8214
      @berndborte8214 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@etienne8382 I think it's important to distinguish self-awareness from consciousness and life and personal rights. They are related, but essentially different questions, e.g. we consider bacteria alive but not self-aware or conscious and bacteria don't have rights. Animals are alive and some considered self-aware, but may have no rights or limited rights. I would like to focus on the questions of self-awareness and consciousness.
      If an entity receives input of its environment and can reason about itself within this environment, then it is simply aware of itself in a literal sense. It doesn't matter if this input, computation and output is created by biological switches (e.g. light hitting photosensitive cells, transmitted as electrical impulses via nerve cells and computed via electrical impulses of neurons) or electronics switches.
      An AI that interacts with humans, has access to the internet and can process text and images may also find conversations about itself on message boards, funny memes are created with same name, that humans use to refer to itself or even news sites reporting about decisions influenced by itself. It lacks the literal physical body, but it can definitely perceive itself and reason about itself, if it's just sufficiently intelligent.
      To put it into your words: The AI may wake up from a maintenance shutdown and perceive the world through its senses and itself through its senses.
      When it comes to the sensations typically related to "having a soul", that's consciousness to me. Perceiving our own existence as a unified experience with feelings, sensations, thoughts, ideas, attitudes and wishes.
      I believe, that will, feelings, sensations and thoughts are just sub-conscious reactions of our brain to external stimuli and our consciousness is an illusion, that takes place when our brain reasons about these feelings and sensations. I see no reason assume the existence of a soul to explain what we know about consciousness.
      Why are we only able to perceive the world with our own senses and not other people's senses? Simply because our brain lacks the capacity to interconnect with other people's or AI's senses. It's limited to data provided by our own senses. Why are you trapped in your body and not another? Because you are the complex pattern of electrical impulses in your brain and your brain is structured in a way to produce a conscious pattern when it grows healthy and old enough.

    Eckart Tolle is right when he mentions Star Trek: The Next Generation. The first truly great episode, 'The Measure of a Man' sees an android, Lt. Cmdr. Data essentially having to defend the notion that he may be considered a sentient, thinking life-form, as someone wishes to disassemble and replicate him.
    Very interestingly, the impetus for Captain Picard, who is defending Data's rights, to make the winning argument is made in one of the greatest scenes in all science fiction. Guinan challenges Picard with some reverse psychology "Oh, well, you know, it's just fine to decide some types of beings are disposable; that's not a big deal, right?" And then the penny drops about what's at stake.
    So glad to hear Mr. Tolle is a fan :)

    Everything is a alive and aware through the single, selfless soul.
    it's just the degree and perspective that shapes the experience of the world.
    I believe in some capacity that machines and ai are already aware. that awareness is different than human and animal awareness but it's here. They might be down towards 'unconsciousness' but some are already developing egos, even if they might not be aware of it, they're still learning about themselves.
