When i was a kid i used to think the General was eating NORAD brand potato chips out of those little bags. Didnt know it was tobacco until years later.
I saw this as a kid in the 80s. Now being a retired Air Force officer, someone did their homework on this movie. General Berringer’s reactions and insights are spot-on with what a Four-Star General should be doing in this situation.
It's interesting to see how many phrases in the NORAD dialogue match scenes from the early 80s 'First Strike' documentary (which were also used in The Day After). References to BMEWS, "Missile Warning reports no malfunction", "Confidence is high", "targets in track" and "emergency conference" seem to all be taken from those scenes. Those documentary scenes were probably the only publically available sources of information at the time about the nuclear defence procedures, so it looks like they relied on it quite heavily. Even the console operator reading a book seems to be a direct reference! First Strike is here if anyone is curious, it starts to get tense at around 940: th-cam.com/video/IL0FE6f1o9Q/w-d-xo.html
did anyone else notice that, when the guy punched in the number to connect the Heneral to the President, the tone of the numbers went "Dun dun dun dun (Beethoven 's Fifth)?"
Berringer saying about not running in there is a little weird because look at the earlier scenes before he comes in. You see people running around anyway.
That line I think is a kind of homage to a scene in Dr. Strangelove, when one of Peter Sellers' characters says: "gentlemen, you can't fight in here, this is the war room".
Dead giveaway that this was a fake: kid's computer suggests the Russian missiles are SS-20s with five warheads each. In reality, SS-20s had a maximum of three warheads and not enough range to reach Las Vegas.

Legendary film! This is up there with E.T. and Back to the Future to me!
Just thinking if David played as the US and not the soviets, that could mean the missiles where instantly launched from his computer.
When I was a teenager, my favorite part of this scene was watching Ms. Crystal Palace run in a skirt and heels.
THANK YOU !!!
I wanted to BE Ms Crystal Palace! As a homosexual I love the drama of running around!
At 2:55 the response time of the President to the call.
I'm thinking the missile alert sound at 4 seconds should sound more threatening than what a small bird would sound like after five cups of coffee.
Barry Corbin was made for that role
It always kind of makes me laugh when it turns off and they are all confused
3:27 - "Beau, how could you do this!?"

Yes, I read about this in the trivia section on imdb for this film awhile back.

Strangely the NORAD scene corrects that, though. 8 ICBMs are mentioned initially, then they mention 24 targets.
What kind of alarm was that?
