I live in Germany. I have bought last year a VW Golf MK3 Convertible from 1997 and I am having it right now completely restored in Poland. Bought it from an old lady who was driving it since the beginning. She loved it and took good care. Everybody was asking me why I bought this car and nothing special. I'm a mechanic in Minnesota and I can tell you not only is that rust very repairable, but I also worked on at least 4 cars today that were significantly worse than that. There's cars around here that we can't even lift on a two post anymore lol.

My first car was an 01 GLS I got for $4500. I had it for 6 months, and it was by far my favorite car I owned. A drunk driver ended up totaling it in my driveway, and his insurance gave me 9k for it. I keep telling myself when my kids get older and I have project car money I'm buying another Mk4.
The flood of memories that I got from this video. I grew up with a Mk3, then bought it from my parents, and modified it thru my 16-26 age. The problems with rust on the gen 3s is insane. Broke my heart truly. So much so that, my new hatch (fiestaST) is getting washed every week and will never see winter. Looking forward to updates to this project 🙌

Same thing happened to my 1995 Evo 3 that was imported from Japan. The left and right rockers and pinch welds were completely rust through, a HUGE hole in the side of the trunk (hiding behind the back bumper) and the floor board had a bunch of spots that needed patched up due to a bolt in roll cage it came with but the rest of the body was SOLID! Everyone said i should just trash it and import another Evo 3 or 2 body and just swap everything over but i dont have $10k+ i can just throw down on a rolling shell lol So, i found a local mobile fabricator and he comes by every month and works on the rust for about 8hrs at a time and its all starting to come together and prove to people it was worth saving. There are only 3 or 4 Evo 3's in Colorado and i didnt want to lose mine! So watching this video brings me joy knowing you are keeping it and fixing it!

James, think about this (this is basically the project i finished...and sold when my kid was born, so i could have a bigger car, also project at the moment :D) : 2008 polo, 1.4tdi .
Sounds crazy to modify them, but it's incredibly rewarding and quite unique. Had the BNM engine (keep away from BMS code) , 70 hp. Changed injectors(AL code), fitted bigger turbo(1749VA), strongflex all around except dogbone (would'v rattle like crazy with that), changed the seats to red leather alfa 147, JDD gearbox with axles and mounts(stock has a tiny disk and low ratios -192kmph topspeed. JDD has the tallest of them -260kmph topspeed ).
Ended up at 149.9 hp and 341 nm...good amount of torque steer and smiles. This build costs pennies, it's simple to do and it's sooo different from anything else.
These (modified) are very rare in EU also, but i dont think you would find any in the US...plus great mpg (i was averaging around 5-6L/100km, that's about 40-50mpg). If you want pics or info, just contact me :D. I did all my research and the fella that tuned it is the same that has the current WR for 402m on this engine ...11s, 290hp+nos (you can search for "blue arosa")
Also, good job with the channel! Greetings from Romania!

Older VW head here... I grew up driving in early watercooled VWs. First car was a '78 Diesel Rabbit L . I still have the '86 GTI my Dad bought brand new in the garage, it has a 2.0L bottom end and that's about as MKIII I've ever gone. I also still have all of those PVW mags you showed in the video. I have a mk7 golf r. First VW I have ever owned. First European car I've ever owned and I've had 20+ cars and I absolutely love it. I fell in love with it. I also joined the local VW Facebook group after I went to a car show. Every one was super cool and nerdy and welcoming. There really wasn't a group like that with any other car I've ever owned.
probably because we, the people who love VW, are one-of-a-kind, kinda like the community for old Land Rovers. everyone who doesn't love VW, are going to argue why their favorite make is the best, while we, VW fans, can only defend. fact is, that VW probably isn't best at a single thing, but the car as a "package," it's a perfect balance between good and perfect at pretty much everything. only problem I can come up with, might be the cost of repair, when something goes wrong. for example, I had a early 2000 Passat, I needed a plastic part to repair a vacuum leakage, that single part did cost me about $100 here in Norway. the car did run fine most of the time before replacing that part, but when the engine got up to temperature, over time, it would be more likely to stall itself at idle. it was my first car, so as a beginner, driving with manual transmission, I quickly learned proper clutch use, and got incredibly good at hill starts. someone crashed the car in August 2020, and I still miss the car, even tho it still had issues running at idle. anyway, after that car, I bought a 2002 Golf, really cheap because of minor issues, fixed all of it, and had a completely roadlegal car for less than $1k, but I didn't replace it's timing belt in time, so it didn't survive more than 22k km. now I got a 2011 Passat, 1.6 TDI, tuned to 140 hp, and I really love that car as well
I was in the euro scene back in 2008-2012 and the vdub kids were always pushing the boundaries as far as style went. A ton of trends were either started or popularized by the vdub community.

I’ve always been a 90’s Honda guy and always will be when I want to make big, cheap power, but I got a MK7.5 GTI a couple years ago as a family car, and it’s such a great balance of new features, good looking, easy to mod, has an LSD, and easy to make decent power on. I love this car.
The 7.5 is so easy to mod, that's around when they finally started making it so you could use a flash instead of having to pull your ecu for your initial tune.
Just 90's cars period man, everyone was turning out amazing vehicles and the EPA wasn't screwing everyone left front and center like they had in the 70's and 80's. Too bad they realized that and went back to the same old screwing in the 00's
A brave man admitting to being a Honda guy on a video about VW tuning. We used to do horrible things to Hondas that showed up to meets. I remember at a Waterfest in Englishtown NJ someone's' Honda was completely wrapped in masking tape. Not an exposed inch and pretty thick.

"oh I need new brake pads? might as well throw all full adjustable control arms, coilovers and a big brake kit on it" 😂
@PemaMendez990 exactlyyyyyy😅
If I'm going to take the tires off I might as well replace everything in behind them so I don't have to go through all the trouble of taking the tires off again
The sentence "I got my car back from Donut" really shows how corporate Donut has gotten
In hindsight it was obvious. Wheel pros bought up every car media company they could to inherit their debt. That’s why donut and hoonigan suck now. Donut basically HAD to own all the personalities and cars as a buisness expense to get rid of the debt through tax rebates. It’s a really shitty and shady tactic but it’s slowly saving a company nobody knows about. Monopolies suck because they have too much power to let themselves fail. They’ll just take everyone else down instead
Not really. It obviously wasn't James' personal purchase, Donut likely helped pay for a lot of it. Things can get complicated but that doesn't mean they tried to keep it from him necessarily
so all cars is not from they? like miata for zack and bmw, i wanna understand , so donut buy the car and they work on it just for the cotent? i think the cars are they but donut just pay the upgrades. but i now hilow is full donut

Everyone I know had a golf or a car that share platform with golf like Skoda Octavia/fabia, Seat Leon or Audi A3 etc
Here guys are stocked about cars that are probably lame in usa, pickups and mustangs are something exotic and interesting lol
We have always loved anything with easy access and less problematic mods. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that our government has screwed us out of having cars to be happy about so we look for them elsewhere to import. I still havent gotten over the fact that they took the Pajero from us, it feels particularly insulting when corps had to rebadge just to get even basic level models into the country. It also doubles the sting when you realize those terrible regulations affect the rest of the world since our market dictates a lot of broad decisions made by most manufacturers
Golfs are super common here too, that's why there's a big scene of people working on them. Definitely recognized as good cars too.
I love the Golf too, but sadly cars like it are disappearing from the US market. Every other car now seems like an SUV or truck. I would instantly buy an eGolf if it were available here.
@No-mq5lw trucks are just big SUVs for fake men at this point. And SUVs don't even deserve their name anymore because almost none of them are actually utility vehicles
I am currently doing the "might as well" treatment on my '06 SAAB 92x Aero. Pulled the engine for head gaskets...Now I am building an STi Type RA short block and matting it to an '06 STi six speed. While you're in there, "might as well" touch every bolt!
Anyone who still drives a Saab is awesome in my book, still hurts that they folded
@@victorkreig6089 I got a 2001 9-3 :D
@@elRiku00 ah back when they hadn't gone full smooth body yet. I hope the rubber seals in the back window are holding up well!
@ I think they are allright, sometimes water gets in to the trunk, might be ventilation flap on the passanger side. Love my 9-3 but rust is a real issue here in Finland for my baby ;_;
The emotions you can feel from this video is 10000% genuine. The excitement from that past you seeing dreams become reality, the nervousness and anxiety of potentially having to start from a clean slate, the passion really emits from this video and it feels so good to see james in his happy place 🙏. Thank you for giving us the inside look at the craziness you call your life 😎👌
*The return of the king*
Mk 6 Golf R(2 door in America) owner here. Absolutely love my golf. Current project/daily driver car. Was never a huge VW guy until I got one. Will never go back again.
Always wondered what happened. Never saw anything on donut or the underground or your insta. Great to see it back
Hi James, my mom had a ''raspberry red'' 2 door golf mk3 back when I was a child. I have so many great memories with that car, but rust was an issue. Glad to see that you'll provide us golf content!
Only owned one VW and I think it’s been my favorite car I’ve had the chance to own. $1500 04 phaeton that had a burble and 2 step tune and massaging seats is hard to beat
VR6 and 16v swaps. MK1 to MK3 builds back in the day. Brought back a MK1 teaching my kids to drive on that now. Let’s go 🎉
5:38 Brb, gonna go rebadge my mk6 jetta "Golf w/ a Butt"
I can attest as a 2013 VW GTI (MK6) owner.. These cars are absolute gold if you can keep up with maintaining them. Huge aftermarket support, tons of fun, and beautiful all around. It’s sad to think they’ll be gone soon😢
0:51 - Am listening
This brings back a memory of a MK3 Golf that I saw when I started working as a paperboy (just revealed that I am old) in my neighbor.
Not the H2Oi feels trip I thought was coming today...
James, it's so awesome to see the life on your face throughout the videos on this channel! It truly looks like you're getting to do what you love and you do it so well! Excited for this project.
Side note, I've been driving an '07 Rabbit for a few years after my old car died, and it's really exciting to see my car/engine mentioned on car channels for a change 😄
Thanks dude. Thats so kind. I’m really having fun with it.
0:27 as someone who has been here from the beginning, this is really the best part to see for me. It means I’ll keep James in my life for a while longer.
Car content is back, let's get up to Speeed!
21:35 You casually smoked out the entire garage and possibly part of the neighborhood lol
I was dying when I saw the whole layer of smoke behind him
@@KelsomaticPDX I bet he was too (literally xD)
I absolutely love my MK7 GTI : ) Its a great budget tuner DD, growing up on the eastern shore of Maryland H2Oi was an annual pilgrimage in Highschool and the 2-3 years after.. Good times.. Now they banned it because It just turned into a takeover of OC lmao people ruin everything good..
I'm Volkswagen for life.. The first car I bought was an 89 8v 1.8 auto Jetta, I still have it 15yrs later, I recently purchased an 07 Rabbit 2.5 Auto and absolutely love it.. My Jetta needs some work and thinking of doing a 2.5 and manual swap..
James, ik you ain't gon see this, but you have one of the most tasteful VWs I've seen on the internet, you're partially the reason why I'm trying to find a Corrado, lol I'm not having a good time ;)
Corrado is...perfecto. Like an evil Golf on roids. One of my fav aesthetic designs of all time. Nothing like it. AWD VR6 would have made it a monster.
@AaronHendu yeah, my goal would be to rwd convert it, and do some wild swap, idk something not VW, something cheap-ish though
Nooo I don’t need vw prices to go up
Literally going to buy a new gti Saturday hopefully it won’t disappear now🤣
The golf at 0:14 is from Jp performance
Yes. The "G3" project.
Replicated felt like a stretch😂
@@dudechillininthesky9244 yeah that car is only like 3% Volkswagen anymore and has a twin turbo v10 from an R8.
@@dudechillininthesky9244probably a joke
@@shadsuuuAudi's still VW though.
So so so stoked to see this! My dad and I are currently working on both a Mk2 and Mk3 VW Gol (Brazilian version of the Golf), absolutely love these cars!
Can’t wait for the project car vids, I was concerned that the golf was stolen or sold…i love this car
16:23 How is the book club not called “speeed reeeading”?
Yeah. I’ve got a mk2 golf Gti project and love it.
This video hit on so many levels. I still have a mk1 project buried in my garage. I remember the heyday of the scene and still have a bunch of friends that I met through the VW community. I also met the most important person in my life through the VW community, my wife. Your car is exactly my style, and my mk3 Golf was very similar with all that 90s goodness. Same cup mirrors, Hella dual rounds, Kamei badgeless grill, dual DTM exhaust, and Porsche phone dials. Such a timeless design and a great era for VW build quality. Except for the epic rust issues that plague the mk3.
i really like the calm and normal speaking pumphrey
I like his screaming persona it's funny
12:00 hes riding around in a G wagon
Jeep*
@@MrGulnw pretty sure a Jeep doesn't have a Benz emblem on the steering wheel 😉
I was kinda thrown off by that too haha
Older? By chance looks basic but I like
Huuugee thank you for making this video, I own a 1988 w124, there's rust that worries me very much, countless stuff that needs replacing, seeing this video has taken some weight off my heart because there's been so many points where I've thought about it being the best to sell my ride but I never could, it's my first car and it's special. Got my full support with this epic Lil golf.
2:30 bro forgets honda exists
It still didn’t start with Hondas
Yawnnnnnn
Least obvious rage bait
I remember when the Honda kids started copying the VW kids too.
He was referring to that specific style nothing more.
07k gang 🤙🏾
0:35 always has been
Gotta say nah bro. VS VR commodore.
Not only am I super excited for this series, regardless of being a JDM lover, but I think James’ videos are the perfect mix of fun and professional. I love it. I watch loads of car guys on TH-cam but James is by far my favourite content creator. Buzzing for this and a huge fan! Notifications are ON.
This is one of the reasons I follow you! The VW content! I own a mk3 golf with a butt 😂 the VW community is still strong and people like you keep it going!
My first build was a 12v mkiv vr6 with a gt35r. I miss it and have been eyeing another build lately. Glad to see these might make a comeback!!
If you want a great deal on a mk3 look around the salvage yards. My daily driver was rust free and arrow straight just sitting in a yard. 4 years and 75k miles later I couldn't think of a better car to save. I am looking forward to seeing how this turns out. VWvortex is still alive with some excellent mk3 restoration projects being documented right now.
wow, so pumped for tis as a series! gearing up to build a 2k caddy right now, getting back in VW like my younger years. The mention of all the old mags and forums, pure nostalgia!
fell in love with this build when i first saw it being built on DAP Autopart’s video and the reveal on donut underground. so sick to see it again even if it’s in kind of a rough state. hope to see more vids (don’t hope mk3 prices go up because im currently hunting for one)
I cant wait for more 90s vdub build content. I was a mk2 guy but my best buds had mk3s. Even painted a plaid hood on one. We totally would've been homies!
My Golf Mk1 standing strong at over 600k km already, no problems, no rust, perfect condition, I'm just too broke rn to engine swap it and mod it, it only has a custom steering wheel and suspension for now, a little lowered, but not slammed, it's my daily and will stay my daily until the day I die, I love that car so much, every ride is like the first one, feels like you're back in the 80s
I legit can’t wait to see this rebuild once it’s all said and done 😁😁
Where I used to study, they actually have 2 golfs rn. And one of the golfs, I learned to change a timing belt on for the first time. It was a beater MK3 Golf that they bought for cheap for his wife to fix up.
