I also have to say that thrift stores should be very grateful to resellers. There is only so much they would be able to sell off in their local economies and resellers are a HUGE part of their business. It shouldn't make them price up their items, that is greedy on their part. They were given the item in hopes the item could continue to find use. The thrift stores provide jobs in their local economies, so they play a great part, the resellers find the item and get them to the person searching for that item. Not everyone has time to thrift or even knows how to.

The "gentleman" who badmouthed you in that comment needs to be sure that he produces all his own food, because the supermarket he shops at is reselling products they did not produce themselves, the clothing store he shops at is reselling products they did not produce themselves, the department store he shops at is reselling products they did not produce themselves, on and on and on. As you point out, donating items to shelters and charities has ZERO guarantee that the donated items will come anywhere near the people who need them. Reselling is what keeps tens of thousands of people from needing public charity, keeps tens of thousands of tons of material out of landfills, and helps keep perfectly usable items in use that would otherwise have to be replaced with items manufactured using more of the resources that were already used to produce the item being resold. The real vultures are the people who believe that they are so morally superior that they should be given the items they want at other peoples' cost.

I have family that just want to throw everything out. I'm trying to rescue as much as I can because there are so many amazing items. I recently sold something within 2 hours of listing it because it was from the buyer's hometown. I was so happy that something I saved had memories and meaning to someone else who will cherish it.

As a person with health issues that would not allow me to work a regular full time job, reselling allows me to be a productive member of society. I pay my bills, do cat rescue and care for a 90 year old woman that I live with that would be in a nursing home otherwise. Reselling supports us along with Social Security and proves that if your willing to work (even if you cannot do it on a regular 9-5 consistent day in day out basis) you CAN make ends meet with your own two hands and take pride in what you do. I LOVE reselling and frankly the reselling community has LONG proven itself with its generosity and kindness shown to many, many reseller's that got sick, had some sort of disaster or whatever. You won't find a more supportive and generous community...imo. I am proud to be amongst them.

@@Ughstopped Interesting. You don't know me or any of my situation except for what I have shared. But you ASSume that I just have free time. I am not "well off" but I am making ends meet by doing what I do. I don't sell used clothes. Not every reseller sells clothes. Did you happen to read my post where I said I am the caregiver to a 91 year old woman who was my neighbor? Did you happen to read that I rescue cats and occasionally other animals? I was on disability and it has since switched to Social Security which should tell you I am at least 65. I have Psoriatic Arthritis, Fibromyalgia and am in kidney failure stage 3. So tell me again how much time I have on my hands? The last thing I need is something else to do. I need time to take care of me but I also need to survive. I am not panhandling or begging for a dollar from someone on a street corner. I am providing a service that there is an apparent need for because otherwise no one would be interested or buy from any of us. But they do. And most of us give much better customer service than any store in business because we CARE about our customers. While you sit in your self righteous arm chair making incorrect judgements about people you know NOTHING about... WE are working for ourselves to make a living that is 100% honest. Goodwill does NOT serve the poor. They do not hand out free clothing or goods to ANYONE. EVER. Everyone has the same opportunity as I do to go in and buy whatever they wish. Everyone has the same right as I do, to do whatever they wish with the items they buy. I am guessing you are one of the self appointed "WOKE" loons who want to cancel people for the slightest infraction, change the English language and meanings of words and label things left and right even when your clueless about what any of it means. Why don't you people stop sticking your noses into everything someone else is doing and try doing something constructive and non-judgemental for a change? Probably too much like work for you.

I believe resellers are filling a gap in the economy by connecting people with the items that they want/need. For example, when it comes to vintage kitchen items, which is a lot of what I sell, they can be very hard to find. Someone in another part of the country might be looking for the broken creamer to match their china set and might not be able to find it locally. By finding that item and listing it, you're providing a service to those who would not have been able to purchase it otherwise.

They’d find fault if we pulled it out of the landfill too. We’re taking away from the seagulls who could use it line their nests 🤣 I absolutely loooove being a reseller. There’s nothing like receiving a message from someone who wanted to replace a favorite item that was broken and they found it in your store or someone found a piece of clothing they wore to a special event that made them feel beautiful. Ask any thrift store employee how much is thrown out. They rotate their items every month and dispose of them after. I shop at the last place they go before the landfill. It’s HEARTBREAKING what is thrown out. I’ll challenge anyone who thinks I’m taking from someone in need or I’m not providing a valuable service. Game on!

One of the toughest parts of walking away from a corporate management bank job to be a full-time reseller was wondering what people would think. It still feels awkward to explain sometimes, but luckily I am old enough now that I mostly find those awkward reactions as amusing. Great points, I think most of the hate comes from ignorance about what we do, how thrift stores actually work, etc.

A few months ago a lady purchased a special edition item from my store. She sent me a message that her father had passed away and was looking for this type of item to decorate his wake service, but was unable to find it till she saw it in my store. A month ago a young lady bought a particular 2004 Starbucks cup from my store, she said her little sister had lost that exact design theme cup. She tried to find one for years because it reminded her of that special time of her life, and now she had it.
As a reseller and a buyer, I have come across items that I would never had thought I would own in my life. Bottom line: reselling is more than just making money. We get help people treat themselves to something that they need and/or is dear to them. We get to bring a smile to their faces and thus have some impact in the lives of people we may never meet in person, and bring usefulness to otherwise unwanted things.

I was very new to reselling at the time, and was honestly kind of confused why someone across the country would even purchase it. Well, the buyer left me a positive feedback, saying her grandson had lost his & she was very grateful to have found him a replacement! When I started out reselling on eBay, I shopped at a well-known outlet store. They always had a published policy (In a frame on the check-out counter) that said they would not sell to resellers.... But they did. A group of resellers would rush in as the doors opened, and load-up on the day's new items. One customer, who could never get her item before the resellers, actually sued the store for not enforcing their own published policy!!! She WON! Resellers were told that they could no longer buy from that store! Credit cards were "flagged." I'm in Michigan, and soon after the ban on resellers, I was on vacation with the family. We decided to go to the same outlet store in Ohio. Not thinking, I paid for my purchase with my usual credit card. A few seconds after my card was swiped, a manager came flying out of a back office door to tell me that I wasn't allowed to purchase from that store either. My credit card information was, indeed, on a list of "DO NOT SELL TO THIS PERSON." Fortunately, I had signed and finalized the sale before they stopped it. (Now, several years later, some resellers are back in that store. In fact, when the store opened after the pandemic, a manager ASKED me to come in and make a bulk purchase so they could free up some space in the stock room. That was a GREAT HAUL!!)

I resell vintage books. This summer I was on a line waiting for a library book sale and got into a conversation with a woman who was so mad that there were "scanners" in line ahead of us. She said they should go to the back of the line so they can choose first. I told her that in the end they leave hundreds of dollars to the library, where most of the other people leave with just a handful of books, if that. How would the library survive without this kind of help. Isn't that the whole point? I, myself don't scan books I buy books that do not have ISBN #, some don't even have copyrights. No matter what, we are helping the shops, libraries, families of estates, etc. How is this wrong? Let them think what they want.

Once she found out I sold on eBay, she heard it through the grapevine and asked me, she would not sell items to me anymore. She told me it was disgusting that I took items from her shop to resell and make a profit....."I saw your auctions!" she said....."I saw my items on eBay!!" I still browsed in the antique shop, and made a mental list of what I wanted and then a friend would go in and purchase the items for me. Sad that it came to that.

I love this video! I am a reseller as well and although I have a career in another field and do reselling fashion as a hobby/part time, I enjoy it and am not ashamed of it! I know people often dont understand how one can re-sell "used" clothing but I think it just is something not everyone will understand and that is fine. I feel that reselling really helps not only yourself but other businesses you are buying from and it also allows things to be recycled and reused through resell. I also am very happy I found TH-camrs who encourage and support each other in this business and community.
P.S. You made a very excellent point about the emotional attachment people have towards clothes and not other items. I can give an example, I am a RN and I wear scrubs to work. I had two pairs of Figs scrubs that were in colors I no longer could wear at work and these colors happened to be discontinued colors worth a good amount of money. so I decided to re-sell them online in my store. They literally sold within minutes! My co worker heard that I re-sold Figs scrubs and thought it was very "Gross" because I am reselling a pair of scrubs I wore even though they were in excellent condition and disinfected and washed. He couldn't wrap his head around it. Not everyone will understand how some items are able to be re-sold and that is okay.

Resellers do the leg work for people. Much like a designer who sources decor for a client or a builder sources material for a house. Reseller shops for a living technically. I resell at a booth, I decorate our flip houses, and I build new houses, all rolled up into one. Resellers provide a service to the customers. It is a great occupation to be in.

I agree to a point. It's aggravating to go to a store and find that something you're looking for is completely sold out. I had made a tribute Christmas tree for my grandmother that had just passed. The ornaments I was looking for at Hobby Lobby was completely sold out. I travel extensively for work and since I was unable to find it at any of the local (30 minutes o less drive) Hobby Lobby stores, I stopped in 16 different stores within a 120 mile radius on my work travels with little luck. Hobby Lobby Online was completely out as well. But I did find them on resale sites. The original price was $7.99, and the 50% off sale was going at the time. I found them on resale sites for prices ranging from $16 (lowest I found) to $34 (at the highest) This was absolutely ridiculous! Buying stores out of items (especially around the holidays) to force people to buy them from a reseller at outrageous prices if they want/need them is ridiculous and shameful.

You hit the nail on the head but I also have to add that environmentally so many of these products are made of different chemicals so on top of being stored in a landfill it's polluting the air, the soil its buried in and what about the people who live near those landfills. So many are poor and whose going to take care of them, the average consumer won't. When is enough going to be enough. In your business at least people want what you have. What I didn't realize until I viewed your podcast was how much money Goodwill spends on trash pick-up, that million dollars could go towards services to help those less fortunate. Until recently I had no idea that all this waste goes to landfills and not just any landfill most of this excess goes to landfills overseas. It's all so frightening. Thank you for making us aware.

Reselling is my sole income, based on chronic health issues that took me out of the workforce. I have to remind myself of that when I feel embarrassed or worried about what people will think. You're right, we're just taking it off their hands and passing it on to someone else.
And for people say we're taking from the poor.... Absolutely not. First of all, I grew up below the poverty line and everything was second-hand. And we never lacked. And as you said, so much of it will go to a landfill. What we do is actually good for the environment!

The service that you are providing is finding items and then putting it in the hands of someone that will value and appreciate that item. I'm into vintage stuff and most people see this stuff as worthless junk. So when its up for sale at a garage sale its one step away from the landfill, people that find and resale these items to people that see the value of these items is doing a great service.

Another point is that there are people who have a physical limitation that prevents them from going to retail stores to shop. There are also people who live in remote locations where retail stores are long distances away who rely on online shopping. For people in these categories, resellers offer a chance to buy not only merchandise found in regular retail stores, but a chance to buy something vintage or unique.

  • @sharonwebb2721

Unless you are being deceitful, like you tell someone you are sending the item to the needy and they give you a discount for those items, or something similar, why would anyone, who bought something from anywhere, or got a gift they just will not use, why would anyone feel embarrassed of their job, or reselling it. It is great for the environment! It is called 'recycling'. My husband worked at Lowe's for a second job, he would see them throwing out perfectly good items, maybe with a crack, or chip...or just no package....a return. Tons of this stuff. He once asked if he could take something, do you know what their policy is? NO, they cannot give this stuff to any employee or charity etc....I believe it has to do with lawsuits....everything seems to these days. But what a shame. All this great stuff going into landfills. Resell, it keeps things out of landfills, it is used again so it keeps a new item out of the landfill too. If you are honest and not trying to rip people off, go for it. Making money by recycling is great. Why do you feel embarrassed? Do you think companies that make millions selling bottles and paper etc...to be recycled feel embarrassed? No, they do not. If someone over priced their item....I see ridiculous prices for stupid things, you can always search for that item and find a more reasonable price. So what if they overprice, you do not have to buy it. Working to take care of your family should not embarrass you, if your work is not something that hurts people, animals or the environment. IMHO

  • @shaneknight4842

I agree with your statement. I'm personally not a reseller. I just observe (watch a lot of TH-cam videos while doing other things in my daily life, lol). What you say is very true in my opinion as well. I've always viewed our communities retail stores as resellers. I understand Target/Walmart/Costco.. ect, are reselling a product to the local community that they had to purchase from somewhere else. Whether the product was made in the U.S or offshore and has been imported isn't even apart of this debate. U.S made products at factories have to also be sold to retail stores inorder for it to be sold to the consumer. Thus making the retail store a reseller. We could even go a step further and call a manufacturing plant a reseller of those raw materials. Because the first process in this chain link fence is unearthing the materials, selling them to a manufacturing plant to be made into products. Then the products need to be sold to a buyer (Target/Walmart (general retial stores). If those stores can't resell those products quick enough to the consumer or they need to make room from new inventory they will usually auction it off to another bidder. The link in the chain just keeps being extended further and further and one point independent resellers get ahold of it and have a chance to turn a profit and give that item a little more use for someone.
In my opinion it's much better for a person to resell an item than send it to a landfill. Because at that point nobody's benefiting. And usually what ends up happening is America (mind you I'm American Indian) they say we don't want to pile all this trash up on our land so lets push it on over to another country or place and let them deal with it. The people who run this country don't like to highlight the damage being done in other parts of the world. But it's a very disgusting situation. And of course America isn't the only ones taking advantage of these poorer countries and people. Not to get too far off topic but yes obviously people just nit pick a certain part in the chain to point a finger at someone. It's always easier to point the needle a different direction. Keep doing your thing as far as I'm concerned. 👍

    Hi Ashley,
I’m so glad to hear you have overcome the negative comments from others for what you do. Never apologize for this!
Your comments are dead on regarding the value of resellers!
I know because I get 100% of my items for reselling out of dumpsters. Talk about a stigma!
Interestingly enough I end up donating about half of what I find. I just don’t have the space for it all. This includes clothing of all types, toys, small (working) appliances, books, etc.
I’ve been doing this for almost three years and honestly, the money I get from the items I sell isn’t all that much but helpful to me and my family, which includes four young children.
The most surprising thing I have learned is a lot of the items I find and eventually donate come from garage sales. It seems many of these folks would rather dump the items they didn’t sell into a dumpster instead of donating them.
I’ll never understand the psychology behind this but I do find it interesting.
Just my two cents on the subject.
My motto for dumpster diving is “Keep what you need, sell what you must and give what you can.” It has worked out extremely well for me and my family.
Keep up the great videos! Jay

I agree with you 100% on all of your points. I think of it as I am a Personal Shopper FOR The Buyer and the difference between what I pay for the item and what I charge is MY COMMISSION. Being a reseller is NOT EASY... it is a LOT of work, but we do it because we understand the value of particular items and realize there are BUYERS who are actively looking ONLINE for said items. I absolutely LOVE the hunt and get giddy when I find something that I KNOW someone else (Buyer) is going to be giddy about getting for MUCH LESS than retail. To me, its a win-win. There will always be those who look down at Resellers because they believe they are ABOVE digging for treasure... I'm totally fine with that - THEY are the ones who keep ME in business!

I find that most people who claim to be advocating on behalf of some downtrodden groups are truly just masking their own frustration. Such as only being able to find a certain item on eBay for 4 times the price that they actually want to pay for the item.
I saw someone the other day trying to make the case that aging collectibles should not be able to be “price gouged”. I guess they just want everything to be exactly $20 forever by government mandate.
