      Same. I shot nikon for more than a decade but when I needed video that Sony was offering, I switched. Nikon was late to the party but it looks like they brought party favors now. In other words they’re catching up and maybe even surpassing some.

    Long time Nikon user here. Stoked to see people finally understand what they are capable of. Admittedly they lagged in video - but I am about 90% stills in my business. Almost 20 years on Nikon. Oh and the menu system is fairly easy once you understand - but the best part is setting up what you need in their "I" menu. Once that is done you don't ever have to go into the sub menus. Everything is a quick change from there.

    • @cammackey

      Yeah the stills the menus are fine.. but fir video there are a lot more settings needed to be changed

    You can never get enough credit for how much passion and craftmanship you pack into your intense masterclasses. And many thanks for embracing this camera, that sort of has been flying under the radar. It makes more and more sense that Nikon and RED are reshaping the cinema landscape together.

    Open gate would have me fully sending to Nikon 100%. Also, in the camera, de-squeeze in as many flavors as possible. Maybe anamorphic IBIS even if it just helps smooth out the handheld jitters. Would buy yesterday if they make that happen! Right now shooting Panasonic for anamorphic and Sony for other stuff, I really am not a huge fan of L mount, though, so being able to adapt to E mount would be such a game changer! Love the video Cam, keep it up!

    Hope to see you post a video of your workflow using Z8.
    Video content about Nikon NRAW N-LOG exposure method and post-production material restoration.
    At present, the LUT provided by Nikon does not work very effectively. It cannot be used directly with DaVinci, nor can it be used as a reliable reference on an external monitor.

    • @JohnShyloski
      @JohnShyloski 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The Nikon N-log color space in Resolve is excellent. Just setup Resolve to color managed assign the Nikon files to N-log (ProRes). You may have to set the files data level to full vs video depending on your shooting setup (internal card vs ninjav) and hdmi settings. Looking forward to possibly having Red Raw in the future!

      @@cammackey a video on lut support and working with N-Log would be helpful for a lot of users. Took me a little bit to figure out the best method for me using a color managed workspace in Resolve. Resolve color manages N-log pretty well when setup correctly. Never had good luck with Nikons Lut.

    • @gabmwrider
      @gabmwrider 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JohnShyloski A whole lot of confusion out in the wild about use of Nikon's LUT with Resolve...as you say it is totally unnecessary with Resolve. Whether shooting NRaw in NLog or one of the other formats in NLog, Resolve can manage it automatically if you prefer, or using a CST if you want to manage manually. No need to even have the Nikon LUTs on your computer with Resolve.

    I feel the exact same way, I'm excited about the merger and the possibilities for new tech. Imagine if Nikon made something like an FX3 or FX6 but with a RED sensor and R3D? That would be so sick. Nikon was my first film camera back in 2005 and my first digital camera back in 2012. Their lenses have been used in cinema for decades (adapted) so it's about time they start getting serious about cinema cameras.

    • @cammackey

    If you want people to stop asking if you're switching cameras maybe you shouldn't make videos with titles like, "I'm switching" or "I'm done with Canon" or... well you know. Come on bud, don't blame the viewers. Not busting balls but when you said that, I tilted my head with a puzzled look similar to the one my wife gives me when I say I'm quitting drinking.

    I so agree with you on your view of Canon. It would be high time for them to open up the possibility for other lens manufacturers to play along on the RF mount. I think that Nikon's purchase of RED will kind of force them to do that, otherwise over time they will see other players really eating into their customer segment. *in your case, literally just buy a $1 smartphone stand from the dollar store or use a book, to prop up your smartphone, problem solved regarding the LCD screen. Its even better than using a fully articulating screen because it's closer and you can control the camera. Just place it out of frame to your right.
    Nikon expects you to use your smartphone if you need to see live view b/c a fully articulating screen also has its many issues. You can fully control all Z cameras wirelessly with your smartphone. It's been like that since DSLRs going back to the mid 2000s.
    I used to just attach my smartphone to my wrist/forearm underhanded. I didn't use it much b/c I was 99% behind the camera.

      I personally hope they change it. It’s the only thing I disliked about the Komodo. It’s great if you’re a canon shooter… but so many of us have jumped ship from canon since they’re so behind on so many things and other companies are offering way more for less. So either a z mount or l mount would be amazing

      And yes I ran a handful of test. With extended oversampling off.. on.. raw high quality on.. off.. same results.
      I noticed you don’t see the shift until you hit record, but when just monitoring it’ll look fine. So I’m hoping it can maybe jsut be adjusted in firmware. Or even better, if it’s just a specific setting. Hopefully someone can figure it out!

Also with all that Nikon offers for film makers in the menu and camera, waveforms, open gate etc, hopefully that pushes Sony to do the same FINALLY.

      This has always been a problem with Nikon’s implementation of video. The funny thing is the data is often there (and the camera is capable of capturing all of it), it’s just in how the data is being converted.
      Definitely look into your post processing chain and see if there’s anything that could be changed. For example, are you using the Nikon LUT? That will clip all of that info out.
