Rams NEW LOOK 2024 Defense under Chris Shula: What's Going to Change? What Will Be the Same?

- The Rams’ defense is a pretty big question mark going into 2024. Aaron Donald is retired. Raheem Morris is the head coach of the Falcons. Eric Henderson is at USC and is no longer coaching the defensive line. Giff Smith is now coaching the defensive line after spending two seasons with the Chargers as their outside linebackers coach (similar to Brandon Staley when he was in Denver, under Fangio). He was also their interim coach for part of last season after Brandon Staley was hired, so he was highly regarded in the Chargers’ building. Shula had previously coached inside linebackers, but that role will now be taken over by Greg Williams. How will Chris Shula implement everything he's learned since being in the building and apply it to the Rams' 2024-2025 defense? By combining methodologies and creating something that's consistently unpredictable.
This defense doesn’t need to be #1, they just need turnovers. Same thing with the 2018 defense, they gave up a lot of yards and touchdowns but managed to create turnovers so the offense can rack the score up. We lost AD, but people ignored the fact we signed/drafted 5-6 starters
Lot of reasons to believe they’ll generate more turnovers this season and start hot. The secondary last year was pieced together in panic. And there were so many unknowns to start the year last year in the front 6/7. Now it’s go time
They keep talking Stanley and the number 1 defense. That defense didn't do anything in the playoffs. Compared to the defense under Wade (Superbowl appearance) and Morris (Superbowl appearance). I need the DBs to play better commit less Pass Interference calls and the the defense to generate consistent pressure, that plus turnovers they'll be in good shape.
When talking about the Shula promotion McVay mentioned early this offseason how important it is to have people you trust and enjoy working together with during the grind of a long season and how a connection like that is valuable between coaches. I think that ended up being one of the deciding factors for McVay. Must also be nice to give your longtime friend a big time promotion. Thanks for the episode. Training camp is getting closer and I am so excited for the season.
look forward to your show, one of best shows on rams,,,keep on keepin on
Thanks you guys. You did a really good job explaining those different defenses.
I think the defense will surprise and do well. Excited to c how the defensive front does.
@@mikeromero8162 they’re going to be fun. Shula will keep up with the stunts Morris implemented with his pass rush by committee. Plenty of zone versatility in the secondary. Increased blitz’s from Morris but with everything being disguised. Can’t wait to see it in action
One thing that hurt the D last year was lack of turnovers. I believe our secondary will be better this year and the push rush will be better which should create more turnovers.
Been impressed with Rams defense this preseason, and their O line.
Great analysis and level of knowledge, I learned a lot.
Love to hear that! Thanks brother. Here to help answer any questions you have along the way. Defense is TOUGH to understand, especially with the ways it has changed over the last 5+ years
I just hope there is no more Soft Zone Bull Sh*T
Great stuff as always!!!
Go Rams!!!
@@BrianBeadle-qc2zb thank you sir!! Go rams!
Both edges are similar builds, more compact, but one is a bit more quick muscle, and the other is burst speed.
Great analysis , great show 👏
It will be interesting to see how Shula commands the unit, especially with a leader like Donald departing. Might start out shaky and develop into a staunch unit as the season progresses. Great pod, GO RAMS!
Great comment, AS ALWAYS. Thanks brother. Think you’re spot on.
I agree that much is about who coach wants to work with.
I simply believe scheme is based upon the roster fit...linebacker is not a huge priority unit for Rams. It has been the line and secondary. It is "like" a futbol team using a single Defensive Midfielder to play between the back and front end of defense.
Don't forget that Kobe Turner was double teamed more often then AD was, last season
Yes - curious how many doubles Kobie got when he played NT vs 3T. Think Donald still had him beat on triple teams, though 😃
@@ramsbrothers
Agreed
cool channel, thanks for the videos. if you can get some highlights/visuals in your videos, i think it would be more interesting.
Thanks! We’re working on it!
👍 Saw CS on the Behind the Grind and hoping he has a good year.
He has the same energy as McVay… infectious. Gonna be fun to see them work together at the highest level
I see an attempt by Shula to have a more well-rounded defense, since auto double/triple teams on AD are gone...offenses will not plan like that against Rams D this season...hope is the 2 edge rushers meeting at the altar to bless the qb, with enough pressure from interior d-linemen.
I think the defense is going to be better than people think, we have alot of young talent that are going to surprise teams even without AD, I expect Verse and Fiske to play solid and Young and Turner are going to go off, Turner will get about 10 sacks and Young has put on 10 pounds of muscle and will be a problem, the secondary has been totally upgraded, I believe we will blitz more because our CBs are better this year and expect turnovers, we will see 😁😎
Love the show guys! New subscriber here. Brother on the right screen, where did you get your shirt? I want one as well😂
Great job and content 👍
Thank you!! More coming your way
He definitely would’ve gotten a job with Miami that interview put alittle pressure on the Rams to promote him.
Please coin the name RAM SLAM, because they'll be like that, take my word !!
I love Nick’s shirt! Where did you get it?
Aloha 🌺 and Mahalo My Ramily Ohana Last year we had the best rookie offensive player and the top 2 rookie defensive players. Now we have Verse and Fiske.
The staff has been a nonstop poaching Carrousel since McVay’s 1st year. Luckily Shula has been there since day 1 as well. McVay wouldn’t promote Shula if he felt he wasn’t ready.
They really tightened up the back end of the defense which will take some pressure off the young front 7 and Sean Desai was a critical hire in helping out Shula. Hopefully they put it all together which I think they will.
We think so, too. Plenty of reasons to be optimistic. ESPECIALLY in comparison to what they rolled out last year and how well the young kids progressed at the end of the season.
@@ramsbrothers I live in Chicago and will be at week 4 and I'm also going to see them in LA for the 1st time against Miami. Can't wait for the season to start!
Hopefully, we can get more turnovers sooner in drives, so it makes for a shorter field for the offence.
It was one thing I was disappointed with Raheem about. A lot of times, when we got the ballback on defense, it was way deep in our own territory, so we couldn't jump out to a lead and get the running game going.
Thanks guys, defense confuses me, so I am just going to hope they improve from last year.
Oh it’s tough to understand for sure. 4 different schemes is a lot. Let us know if you ever want/need a more detailed explanation for something - always look forward to your comments!
I hope chris shula lives up to his family legacy, he has the making of a rock star coach
👍👍👍
The Rams Defense need to start week 1 .Go level Goff repeatedly and show the NFL they are a force to reckon with. Its revrnge time for Higbee and their dirty play vs Puka and willams .1 point win is the best they could do .They cant double Donald and Turner like lastcseason . Not with Verge and Fiske on the Line.
Bro where did yall get the shirts?
Homage (Donald shirt) and the other from a friend!
@rams bro do you think b jackson can play inside lb ?
Yes. He can probably play a little 4i
Boy i hope so. I think we're banking on too young a group. I hope Im wrong. The hype machine is too loud on these rooks.
Well it wasn’t loud enough last year for the rooks so maybe balance is being restored lol
raheem morris! lived and died by the sword, got lucky with a young D(with an aaron donald on the line helps!), gambled!!
@@chloemplaydiy945 he didn’t really gamble. Blitz rate was low. Was creative with his line stunts and had a high rate of rotating DBs post snap. Only “gamble” was in short yardage situations when he switched to man
@@ramsbrothers its your channel, of coarse you wouldn't agree with a blue collar rams fan, cuz you think your all smarty pants about it all! but when you have a 90% rookie defense!= like i said, you live by the sword, and it can either go really good!= lettin a bunch of rookies go kill the ball, and it work out, or it could go in the other direction!= chaos!!! it is what it was!= a 90% rookie D, with aaron donald on the Line, a smart Qb & a good run game..., raheem let a bucnh of kids go kill the ball, and it LUCKILY WORKED!!!
@@chloemplaydiy945 lol it’s not an opinion man. We were just giving you the facts. We’re also… blue collar Rams fans. But ok.
@@ramsbrothers yeah whatever!!
They defense worse Raheem Morris is boring. Soft zone easy first down
Defense.
The 10 minute scoring drive. Drove me nuts.
This is why we spent 25 minutes explaining why Shula’s defense won’t be the same
@@ramsbrothers REEER.
@@derwolfpack3599 what does that mean?
@@ramsbrothers A little snarky don't you think? Talking to people as though they were children, dad.
