  • "Who were the Hollywood Ten? This 1950 documentary gives us a closer look at the ten blacklisted film writers and directors who defied the government and the sentiments of their day by refusing to testify during the HUAC anti-Communist hearings. John Berry, who directed the documentary, was blacklisted himself upon its release." (Ironweed Films)

To regain his standing in Hollywood Edward Dmytryk, one of the Ten, when released from Danbury snitched on the director of this film, John Berry.

Reading some comments, I can understand why the USA is the most modern and the most medieval nation of this world. At the same time. Not so good news really.

Exactly. We wish we could be as honourable. Today so many people would just rat out everyone to save their own skin. We only wish we could have such guts under such circumstances.

No matter what. These were all men who sincerely believed in themselves, and took a couragous stand against these political bullies. Family men all, who thought of others before themselves, and believed in principals deep in their moral fibre.
Today people believe in Walmart and entitlement.

The red scare was nothing more than a second Salem witch trial!

As is briefly stated in the commentary: the gavel-banging 'answer the question.. that's not the question' Rep. J Parnell Thomas, chairman of HUAC, was jailed for theft. He served time in the same CT correctional facility as some of the Ten.

Sent here by Eddie Muller of TCM’s Noir Alley. He mentioned this documentary on 11/12/22, and I’m glad to see it’s available for all to see.

I thought under the bill of rights we are allowed to be affiliated with any political party? Isn't that one of our freedoms?

tomness64 - Yes I agree with you. What gave those people the right to take their freedoms away? Their freedom under the bill of rights to be affiliated with any political party.

I wish they showed this moving documentary to us in High School while they were showing us red scare films and pro-war garbage. We got the impression we were being raised for cannon fodder. Thank you for posting this.

I must say that I am sympathy with the Hollywood Ten because I believe they were standing up for their rights in the face of an American government inquisition during the Cold War, an era of tragedy and farce.

For those who missed The film Trumbo, here is a video that's a chilling reminder of how our government can trample on our liberties. It only requires federal govt to incite fear--then all of our freedoms are up grabs.

Actually in the case of the Soviet Union it was their excuse to have a dictatorship of the proletariat (or dictatorship) because they felt they knew what the people wanted (lol). However, if you can honestly state that the US government is not statist in REALITY then more power to you. You have basically only two parties that can win power, that are really pretty much the same. And can do what they want when they want.
