I was sexual abused as a child by my father, my mother knew but choose to hide from it. I would only get toys if I did what he wanted then I stopped asking. From age 6 -16 I suffered daily with my body in constant fear of the next attack. I was forced to marry at 17, my brothers were allowed to continue education till they all got degrees but I did as I was told. I wasn’t a bad child if anything I was very submissive. I still went back to my parents and helped them with their daily living and what ever they wanted. I guess I still needed the feel to be wanted by them and loved by them. Me doing these things meant that they loved me and any acknowledgment I would get would mean they loved me. I now know they didn’t live me I was just a piece of meat they could use. This is just a small part of my story.
As a result of 42 years of trauma I have suffered a brain tumour, blood disorders, sever depression, pmdd, gut issues and I battle every day to survive the meantal and physical pain. The physical I can deal with but the mental torture of being unloved by the people who we’re supposed to protect you is unbearable.

I'm very sorry to hear about the pain and challenges you've had to suffer, and I admire how resilient you are in continuing to support your parents despite everything. The story you tell shows your inner strength as well as the depth of your love and compassion.
It's heartbreaking to feel unloved by those who should care for and support you, but please remember that your worth is not defined by their actions or acknowledgement. You are a wonderful person who showed great compassion and kindness, and that is something to be proud of.
Seeking professional care for your mental health is a brave start toward healing, and I hope you continue to put your well-being first. Remember that you are not alone, and that there are people who love you including me and want you to be happy and healthy. Keep going, and may you find the love and support you truly deserve on your journey ahead. 💕✨ Sending you a lot of hugs and love 💕✨ always take care

    Out of marriage.

Out of long term heterosexual relationships.

Actually he said during the '30s the ratio was 1:1. Those things you said women should opt out of are the exact things women had in the '30s. The only thing that's changed now is women have taken on fulltime jobs in addition to all of that. If there's something we should opt out of, it's trying so hard to be do-it-all career women. We are clearly not built for this type of stress.

What also needs to be discussed is that when women do feel something is wrong physically and go to the doctor for help, we are less likely to be believed that our symptoms are real. I know so many women living in pain every day. Some know why, but it took them years to be diagnosed and for others like myself, we are still waiting on an explanation outside of "Oh you're just anxious. Try to be less stressed and you'll feel better". Clearly not only is that not working, this video asserts that the stress we deal with is, in fact, causing us to develop more physical issues in life.

It's not about us not being able to modulate our emotions well. We're fabulous well-trained at that. This makes so much sense...I grew up with a verbally abusive father who crippled my mom and I with fear with his daily rage. I developed an automimmune disease at the age at 16. Highschool was stressful, but when I came home I did not have a safe space to retreat to. My heart breaks for the younger me who felt trapped in that household--too scared to runaway, but too scared to speak out against my rageful father.

Same, two of my sisters are narcissists and for 40 years I’ve carried their bulling up until 18 months ago. I never opened up even to my husband because I just didn’t want to burden him or my beautiful children. When I finally had a breakdown, I cried for days, weeks and months! Never been a cry baby either because growing up under their care I wasn’t allowed to cry, if I did I’d get black and blue bruises all over. So I always held back my tears out of fear and I guess - a coping mechanism .Bizarrely crying helped me so much and when my husband and children saw that,
they were the best support especially my beautiful daughter. She was the one who told me the cause of my autoimmune thyroid disease. She did t want to tell me at first because she thought I’d hurt more knowing what caused it. I was in shock, because I always thought, why am I the only female in my family that has this autoimmune.
      Now I know 😢

I'm a med student and absolutely think that high and chronic stress does effect our immunity, especially autoimmunity. Every time I have problems at the time of an upcoming important exam, I get an auto immune condition, that completely goes back under control without medications once the stress is over. It's very important for women to learn how to control the stress, I know it's very difficult but there are ways to mediate and communicate with our partner and cut off the toxic people.

It’s better managed through health optimisation via supplements, diet and exercise, but drs know next to nothing about supplements and diet.
Thankfully the longevity science is doing something about this, all of this “ mind over biology” is thankfully outdated now, we used it for years because it was the only blunt tool we had, thankfully science and technology is creating better tools, but all this “ mind over biology” is only helpful for an extremely small % of people who have the genetics to take advantage of these methods.

@@Vgallo unfortunately, healthcare nowadays is relying more on medications than the mind of the patient, if the patient is going through difficult circumstances, supplements and diet won't help, not saying they aren't good but sometimes all a patient needs is a good support system, that would lift up their spirit and help them a lot. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. You are completely correct. Autoimmune disorders are complicated and multifaceted illnesses, and it's important to understand the impact that stress can play in them. Stress can cause, aggravate, or maintain the activity of autoimmune diseases.
Living with an autoimmune disease can be extremely difficult, and it is frequently a daily battle that is not clearly visible to others. It is important to raise knowledge about the different factors that might effect these diseases, including stress, in order to better support persons who are experiencing them. My poor Mother experienced such hardship through childhood poverty and abandonment. In her thirties her husband died, leaving her a widow with 5 children. Her mother died a year later. She spent the next 35 years being bounced between doctors. Her GP labeled her a hypochondriac. When she was 72 years old an emergency room doctor discovered she had Lupus. She died 5 years later. She was only treated for Lupus for those last 5 years. Her crippled hands and feet from rheumatoid arthritis, her lungs were at 30% capacity. Her digestive system was ravaged so her food was puréed for her. She was trapped in a body that had rebelled against her. She raised 5 children and died with 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. The youngest ones mostly remember her “scary hands” and her coughing to the verge of suffocation. Bloated from too many steroids and wheel chair bound.

This is why getting married and having kids doesn’t benefit most women unless you are marrying a very independent responsible man who can do most things on his own and doesn’t need to be treated like a baby. I truly believe men and kids sucks the life out of women.

Women are raised in gender based shame. Before a girl gets 1st period she already hears opressive, self-limitng beliefs about own gender. Everytime we experience misogynistic attacks whether in real life or social media it feels like stabs in our body, chakras etc which affects reproductive system and what's not. I've read books abt emotions- health connection but none of them talked about how gender based shame affects our health.
Women are also encouraged to live with anxiety, agoraphobia bc we hear fearful messages how dangerous world is for us while never being taught how to deal with stress and anxiety.
I have chronic anxiety since childhood and can't imagine having kids which would increase my anxiety 100x because of how stressful and responsible it is.
Ofc society doesn't care abt women's mental health and pressures them to have kids anyway.
I am grateful for dr. Claire Weekes books on anxiety.

Thank you for your insightful and honest comment. Your thoughts put light on the many difficulties that women experience as a result of societal expectations and gender-based shame. It's heartbreaking to see how these repressive attitudes may affect every part of a woman's life, from mental health to reproductive well-being.
Your understanding of the link between misogynistic attacks and their physical and emotional consequences is impressive. It is important to increase awareness about these challenges, which are frequently unspoken. Dr. Claire Weekes' anxiety books are a great resource for anyone dealing with anxiety. Your bravery in sharing your personal experience with persistent anxiety is admirable. Remember, your voice matters, and it helps to a broader conversation with the goal of creating a more empathic and understanding society. You are not alone in your feelings, and many others can relate to your experience.

There are many things you can look into to help you. Have you ever been tested for Epstein-Barr Virus? It is believed that autoimmune illnesses stem from active EBV. If you have it take Monolaurin. It’s the only thing that can destroy EBV.
Also look into flower essences. They can help with trauma, anxiety, depression. If you are uncertain where to start try Rescue Remedy. I’ve been taking it, and many flower remedies for over 30 years and they have helped me, and the countless others I’ve suggested them to. I’m truly sorry for all the pain you’re going through….I hope you read this and look into them, I believe they will help you…or even those in your life who are unsympathetic towards you and so needy…those are extreme personality types that flower essences can help with as well.

@FrenchViking466 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a complex therapy designed to assist an individual in learning healthy cognitive functioning. It teaches an individual how to understand the impacts of their thoughts, to become aware of the emotional reactions to those thoughts, and whether or not they are in reason with the objective reality. Many exercises are given to aid in the goal, which is to think and emotionally respond to the objective reality in a balanced and healthy way. I was diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder so much of the way I related to the world was purely subjective, which led me to respond to situations in inappropriate ways. The therapy aims to reconstruct the mind and its processing functioning. There are many free pdfs online, and I highly recommend reading one, especially if this seems like something you might want.

Dr. Mate understands women’s general position in the world. What a relief to have someone recognize that many women bear the social and familial role of “fixers” with perpetual understanding smiles plastered on their faces. When covid came along I was horrified, of course, but after a while I realized that what I really want for myself is to be left alone after 74 years of being what everyone else wants. I have always been cheerful by nature and remain so. My selfishness bothers me less every day and I find myself extending my own little “covid lockdown” as long as I can get away with it. I prefer to not even talk on the phone as my hearing is failing. I wish everyone the best but please let me be myself. My upbringing would explain why I’m more comfortable alone but that is yesterday’s news. Thank you Dr. Mate.

I developed MS at age 8. I've tried to tell my neurologist and other doctors (I also have a few other autoimmune conditions that require ongoing medical care) that it's the result of trauma and CPTSD. They just stare at me lol. But once I realized there was a mind/body connection after reading Gabor Mate's book, I was convinced. While I knew I was reactive and not quite as emotionally stable as I wanted to be, I didn't even realize I'd been abused until I started therapy and my therapist actually cried when I explained my childhood. I think we protect ourselves from the reality of how bad it is/was. This is what I did, along with continuing to fawn over those who had abused me, and it made me even sicker. When I could no longer work, or even walk, I made healing my psyche and body my career and 10 years later I'm almost better. I think I'm 90% there and still working diligently to prioritize myself and my health. I've discarded toxic relationships, I meditate, go to therapy and physical therapy, working the trauma out of my muscles with yoga and mindful, meditative stretching, and daily workouts. I went to medicine ceremonies and used hallucinogen healing modalities. I fell in love with my own beautiful, resilient, courageous self! How amazing to survive all this and still thrive! Taking control and healing is incredibly empowering, and just making the decision to do so is healing. It's like realizing you're hurdling down the road in a sports car, but you're in the backseat and nobody is driving because it's your car, and you jump in the driver's seat and take control. Now, instead of having this scary, awful experience, you're the driver of what happens in your life and within your own mind and body. It's amazing. Please heal, please do this for yourself because you deserve that! How we're treated as little girls and women is a reflection of our male-driven, patriarchal, purity culture society, not us. We're beautiful beings who deserved better, but we absolutely can and should give that to ourselves!

They are taught from a very early age, that a good woman must be a perfect daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother etc. She's not supposed to say no, or to look after herself. Anyone that is under stress for a good length of time , will develop Dis-Ease, it causes a inflammatory effect in the body, and affects the Immune system. We must realize that we are spiritual, emotional, and physical beings, and need to tend to all of what we are, to have a healthy balance.

Luckily one of my Doctors not the rheumatologist, picked up on my stress based on hearing the story of my life and she pushed me to see a psychologist..... What's the result.... I say no now without hesitation, I don't linger in situations where people make me feel awful. I cut off toxic people quickly. I don't owe them anything. Not doing this is always an expense exercise for my health an my pockets. The most I have had at a consultation is 8 cortisone injections.... Caused by me entertaining toxic people. Not again.

After a harrowing upbringing, I was bullied beyond belief and bearing by my in laws in another country. I collapsed and was hospitalized for a month. Nervous exhaustion they said. I had 3 minutes with a dr who said nothing more than, one day will will learn to say no. He was right. It took a while but I did and it was effective. When widowed, I went no contact with the in laws. No regrets. Bliss. I have boundaries.

I remember my mom being diagnosed with non follicular lymphoma and she had a history of other diseases such as frozen shoulder, and back pains. I didn’t know what autoimmune diseases were like. But all the doctor informed us was its your immunity system treating your own body as an intruder.
The only information about psychology and stress I had then was from a grade 12 psychology book. That said b cells in our white blood cells acts when the body is in stress.
Thats exactly what i told the doctor as a teenager, then mom s b cells are so used to be in action. That they have started acting on her own body. He didn’t say a word and moved on.

It's sad that you were unfamiliar with autoimmune disorders and stress at the time, but it's admirable that you made an effort to connect your understanding from your psychology book with your mother's situations.
Medical practitioners may not always be able to provide extensive answers during a session, but it is important to continue pursuing knowledge and asking questions. Understanding how the immune system can turn against the body in autoimmune diseases such as non-follicular lymphoma will assist us in understanding the complexity of such diseases. If you want to learn more, there are plenty of resources accessible now that can provide further information regarding autoimmune illnesses and their relationship to stress. It is important to keep informed and to continue pushing for your own and your loved ones' health. Bless You

I totally get what he's saying and agree. I had tremendous stress and a hidden abscess tooth. I became very ill, started having rashes on my scalp and face near my ears, then moved down my neck, upper back, and under arms - the doctor told me I had "auto-immune disease," but never asked about my teeth. Once the pain became intense, I had 3 different dentists tell me I had a problem with my back tooth and I said but the pain's in the front. Only when I pressed hard on the 3rd dentist did he tell me the pain was radiating forward. So I had it taken out and about 3-4 months later the majority of the poison had left my system and so did the "auto-immune disease."

This is so on point, coming from a child who was a perpetual people pleaser, living with polyarthritis I know how good stress can fuel you, but bad stress left me in chronic pain for 20 years. Gabor speaks directly to my soul. The fear I had was to be alone and no friends, but the truth was the more people, the more empathetic I was, and in my role in the community I was trained to help everyone and not be selfish. I felt that! Turns out it’s not the fear of being alone, it’s the fear of hearing yourself and knowing it’s not working. I left my job after 30 years, went home to care for again parents and a sick brother. In all that, my energy was focused, I was doing what felt right for me, prioritizing my health and mindfulness Pilates and the isolation I dread became my sanctuary, and for the first time ever, my autoimmune disorders are not firing on all cylinders and the stress level dropped. Amazing mind that Gabor. I was so lucky to have met him in my community. I didn’t know he was my catalyst to healing down the road. ⭕️

For a few years now I have been battling with extreme pain in different parts of my body (especially pelvic area and lower back), arthritis, different female health issues and edema. I'm not even sure it's officially arthritis and edema; this is what I presume from the symptoms of what I've researched. I have debilitating reflux most days and always seem to be feeling on the verge of a cold or the flu. I have to constantly treat symptoms of something or other, it's like whack-a-mole. I'm always exhausted, like I need to lay down. I'm only 38 but I feel so old in my body. Functioning as a single parent and working more than 1 job feels like an impossible feat most days. Sometimes even washing the dishes is insanely challenging - the energy just isnt there. I haven't been able to see a doctor for a full health check-up as they are exorbitantly expensive where i live and i don't have health insurance. Without sounding dramatic, some days it feels like my body is ravaged with cancer. Ive never had cancer, but it's like it feels like what i imagine it would feel like. If that makes sense. My entire childhood and adolescence was trauma after trauma, extreme poverty and then eventually I just became a proverbial punching bag for so many different people: family, partners, friends, colleagues. All this time, ive felt like i was a hypochondriac. Or that all these illnesses/issues were all in my head. It doesnt help that i look "normal" and people always tell me i look good (funny enough, especially when my pain is at its worst and I feel the most ill). I eat healthily, i have vision boards, i do affirmations and have mantras, practice positive thinking, read the right books. I don't smoke or drink. I do everything "right". When I try to work out though, it's like i just can't stick to any constant routine as i just start to feel ill or im too tired to do it for more than 2 days. I thought I was lazy or a failure or looking for excuses, even though logically i knew that couldn't be the case. Now after seeing this, I feel like I've finally found something to explain all of this. I dont know if anyone's even reading this, but it really feels good to finally understand. I hope this happens for someone else like me ❤

He was surprised that I had tested positive for intrinsic factor antibodies (indicates pernicious anemia). I continues to suffer and began to have more digestive problems. I now know that it’s a second autoimmune disease called celiac. I avoid gluten and have replaced what, barley and rye grains with brown rice, corn or corn flour and no more white bread, pasta cakes, cookies, pie crust because most are made with gluten in the flour.
I still have serious symptoms including fatigue which has been remedied some with iron supplements (iron bisglycinate). And b vitamins also give me more energy.

You sound like me and your symptoms you talk about are VERY familiar to me. Eventually diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Epstein-Bar Virus and a few other things. I did everything right too, but the overwhelming stress component starting in childhood has stayed through adulthood. I have deliberately stayed unmarried, etc. for the last 20 years just to keep myself in a normal functioning flow to lessen the stress. My Rheumatologist retired me medically a few years ago to save me from myself in order to keep me from overdoing (we are always perfectionists in everything, aren’t we?). When the stress is gone, we get to feel what “normal” might have been like had we not experienced the life we had. It can get better. Find a good doctor, therapist if you need or want one, and people who really “see” you. If it takes some isolation in order to get your body and mind connected again, then that’s what you create for yourself if you can. It sometimes takes a huge step back in life in order to move forward again. I hope you truly find what you need to heal…💜

Very interesting!!! In my first marriage (to a narcissist), I developed Hashimoto disease (thyroid disease that causes slow metabolism). I did have anger, I did say « NO! », but him being a narcissist, no was not an option. Then I developed Crohn’s disease. At that point I left him, but there was much emotional healing to do; in that process I also developed Graves’ disease (thyroid disease that causes the thyroid to be overstimulated). Yes, Graves and Hashimoto contradict each other, and although it is quite rare, it is possible to have both. Yikes! And just a few years ago, I was borderline for Myasthenia Gravis (which affects the nerves in the face which can cause temporary but recurring paralysis) but that has since subsided (thank God!). So, yes, I’d say stress has a lot to do with it. The notion of being the one who has to make it all work out is a little insane, but we women all do it. To this day, I still do it, but now I am married to a wonderful man…but I still need to work on things, like asking for help instead of trying to do it all on my own. In hindsight, I would counsel women not to enter into a permanent relationship until you have a strong EQ. Once you have sound emotional intelligence, you can help your family to identify their emotional burdens and enable them to overcome them.

It makes sense. It is definitely stress. Emotional stress over long periods of time. Especially dealing with narcissistic and abusive family members as a youngster. I am highly sensitive anyway and was always the black sheep so it doesn't surprise me that I have Lupus and RA now.

A huge present day stress factor are the algorithms on TH-cam and elsewhere, that constantly feed us more videos on issues we may have watched about subjects that concern us - reaffirming and building our fears. I feel this is partly why it's now hard to have a discussion with anyone, as everyone's so convinced they are right.

It might not necessarily work, but I recommend reading "Niacin: the real story" written by some Doctors. In it he refers to many studies but one of the key findings is that stressful events lead to not only a shortage of vitamin B3 in the body, but also to a dependency to it.
The main author goes on to say that he's cured a number of people from a variety of conditions brought on by extreme experiences by large doses of B3 (nictotinamide) and, while it does take time to recover (more than 6 months), they do.
Vitamin B3 is cheap and widely available, so people looking to try something to improve their situation haven't really got much to lose by trying this.

Grew up in violent home too. Also husband cheated while overseas. He had cancer 3 times. Now I am alone. It had all affected my health.

We women through centuries were taught we were NOT allowed to say NO, to BE QUIET to keep the peace and to feel GUILTY to do anything or buy anything for themselves including buying feminine napkins which are necessary. It has been pressed upon us via social and family cultures and any woman who spoke up or fraught for women’s rights are considered a B itch and trouble maker. Now we have modern stressors that no women face before, along with the old paradigm of thinking. We as women are better now then our ancestors, but our ancestors died young. We live longer and autoimmune and fibromyalgia, and other diseases are manifestations of us living longer with the same problems with new stressors. So in one way we do have it better however our health says it’s not. Our bodies are screaming!

In "When the Body Says No" (I think), Dr Gabor Mate goes through actor Gilda Radner's life and subsequent death to see how her biography affected her biology.

I think as more public figures open up and talk about mental health therapy and its impact, especially its link to physical health we will see a change.
the awareness i hope will aid funding allocation, general acceptance and normalisation of therapy and other mental health care options.
So ppl can look after their mental health just as easy as seeing GP when ill.

honestly, i've developed a fear and anxiety over the years of any guys who call themselves "funny", especially guys who are funny in public, and there's a reason for that. there's a fear within me that they're looking at me as their next target to make a joke about and humiliate in public.
ever since i was a little girl, to be quite frank I was taught by my parents to be obedient. I'm more of the sensitive type tbh, so that turned into me over the years becoming both externally obedient as well as mentally obedient to people and not being so aware of who I am or what I'm doing. the only thing that I could hold onto to ensure I'm still me is music and my passion for it. so I sort of learned to cope by always listening to music in my head or visualizing scenarios with music playing and being more in my mind and oblivious to someone trying to joke on me or trask talk me. doing that just helped me avoid the threat.
this turned into many cases where people thought that because I didnt respond when I was pranked, harrassed or humiliated, they can keep doing what they're doing on me and I'll be oblivious to it. It's not that I'm oblivious, I just ignore it and hope that they'll stop but they don't. and the times I tried to hit back saying it's not nice and stuff, there will be that one guy who will make a joke and everyone will just start pointing and laughing at me, making me feel alone. i'm not very good at comebacks, and there were scenarios where people found that "cute", but it honestly just makes me wanna go insane then and there. there were so many situations like this throughout my childhood where people saw me as either annoying because of how oblivious I was, or a scapegoat that they could just keep picking on cause I wouldn't fight back. not so much harrass, but more of pick on and use as their model to joke about and humiliate. and i wanted to feel "cool" so I just either stayed silent or laughed along without being aware of how nastily or terribly this person is joking about me to the point where they're attacking me for no reason. many guys throughout school thought they could prank me in the same way, and it even turned into every single time that I was being asked out or being kissed by a guy as just a dare or a prank. Later on, minoring in theatre in college, my professor told me that i was a good actress but when it came to improv, I was the worst in the whole class because I just couldn't spontaneously come up with funny or random situations that would keep things going or just go with the flow and be willing to take a risk then.
and it sucks cause at 24 (i'm straight), even though I've developed avoidance issues where I disassociate when it comes to romantic feelings I have for anyone, i'm still that girl that can envision having a beautiful relationship with someone, my inner child still loves those genuine romantic movies where they're both laughing, feeling good in each others prescence. but i fear that if someone is good at joking around, that they could turn around and make the same jokes on me and take me for granted and look down on me as easy to use because of that. but now because of my fear of a funny guy, which many guys seem to be, and many people claim that they want, if I FEAR that very thing, i wonder how can I expect a guy to like me? the thing is, even my parents who didn't really get me tbh, it turned from them trying to help me cope with a joke, to me becoming and feeling like a joke. That's why even the movin in 2019 Joker really hit me hard, because sometimes even I've wondered what if I just hit that breaking point sometime.
Thank you so much Dr Maté for speaking about this, and through hearing your words it made me introspect and really think hard about it! Oh, and no, your humor does not make me feel anxious at all haha it doesn't even cross my mind. Think it's cause I feel safe knowing that you have the best intentions in mind and it's just to enjoy not for anything else

You've clearly gone through some difficult situations, and I'm sorry to hear about the challenges you've had coping with humor and wit in your life. When we waste time worrying about hard facts, studies etc. we waste valuable time. Once upon a time gut instinct and common sense were used. Not hard to understand how much the modern way of life has not only not improved us but made us work harder, longer and divided us from our children's day to day lives, while strangers take care of our most precious - our children. Woman wanted equality and sadly that is not what we got. So many are very unhappy in this mad dash to acquire and be the perfect Mom's etc. It's no wonder so many are sick.
