I'm sure you guys are aware of this already, but if you have the 'OK google' function on your phone, you can go into your settings and listen to all the recordings the function has made of you, and it plays a few seconds either side of when you say "OK google". So it's obviously able to record you in the background all the time, which I thought was pretty spooky.
This comment is a year old and it creeped the fuck out of me. And I thought Google was my friend!

I deleted Facebook for the same reason. I was talking to my mom about these smoothies I like and literally the next time I opened Facebook I saw an advert for them. Then another time I was talking with her about my sister being pregnant and how excited we were, then I opened Facebook and there's ads for pregnancy tests. Goodbye!

In regard to the morality question involving convicting the robber and the kidnappers that have your daughter, wild card: Cheat the system and convict the robber, get your daughter back, claim mistrial as you were judging under duress, double-jeopardy rule doesn't apply since it's a guilty verdict (versus a not guilty one), give your information to the police so that they can bring the kidnappers to justice, everyone's happy, done and done.
i am not sure that you can claim mistrial after the decision has been made... i thought you can only claim it while it is happening?

The train scenario is very interesting because the two scenarios are showing that if you either switch to hit the one man or push the man into the track you are actively making the decision to kill someone even if it is for the greater good.
Therefore its showing that in both those situations you would be committing murder rather than just letting the train continue and hit the 5 people which would be man slaughter.
But most people are strongly apposed to the pushing scenario because you are physically pushing someone which would make you feel more guilty even tho you would be just as guilty to switch the train to hit the one man.
Exactly. And on that note, I think the quiz kinda screwed up by giving an option C where you could "warn" the man. But if it doesn't have that extra option, it would further show the last line you said about the scenario.
I don't even want to picture myself living in the black mirror universe...that shit is just so depressing, especially the one with the 15 million credits one, that episode makes me feel so claustrophobic and staring at those screens all the time...Jesus that's horrible. The only nice ones are the San Junipero and maybe the one with the guy from Ex Machina.

Yeah that episode is crazy depressing. I think what makes in scarier is the fact that it seems plausible. Like I can totally see advertisements heading in that direction.

Speaking of hacking into technology... Last night while I was on my laptop watching things. I had about 3 back to back instances where someone or something was trying to connect to my laptop via bluetooth. Two were labeled as some random letters and another was like a cell phone ID. I didn't think anything of it. I turned my bluetooth off instantly and plugged my speaker in, rather than wirelessly connecting it. I assumed it could have just been a neighbor that kept accidentally hitting my laptop and not their device. But then about a minute later my security software was picking up and deleting some sort of malware. Like.... come on. Not a coincidence.
The Facebook app stuff makes sense. When I moved in with my cousin I was constantly talking about wanting to buy a tapestry, and now I see ads for tapestries all the time.

I just competed in a DECA competition like two weeks ago and I got some weird scenario where I had to be "the director of sales for Kiki and Coco: Live" which was a kids show going on tour and they told me the tickets were only $10 and they were going to smaller towns rather than larger ones. But I had to plan how to advertise and distribute tickets to target markets and stuff with a small budget. But that one was kind of boring, if you look online you can probably find some scenarios.

My proof that FB was monitoring me was when my brother had a stroke and I thought of buying a hospital bed for him. Within the same day, out of nowhere, I got an ad for a hospital bed in FB.
Granted I searched for hospital bed in one of the site that handles trading (ala EBay), it still creeped me out.
Needless to say, I don't have FB on my phone. Not just because of this, but its toxicity as a whole: filled with lies, sensationalism, and unnecessary negativities.

It’s called retargeting. I work for a marketing agency and companies pay us MILLIONS to re-target consumers who have searched online, ANYWHERE. Literally if you typed anything using any of your accounts into a computer connected to the web we have access to that and we can, and do, continue to remind (retarget) you that you looked at this hoping you will buy it. And it works.

Companies are allowed to sell your information. When you swipe your credit card the store collects that information and sells it to companies interested in the data. It isn’t a single app listening, it’s the entire electronic world that is trying to profit anyway they can.

I’ve always noticed things I online shop is new ads on Facebook but recently I was TALKING to my friend about wanting a pop socket, and next thing I know pop sockets are all my ads on Facebook. My Facebook wasn’t opened, my phone wasn’t even unlocked. THEY ARE LISTENING TO YOU!!

The thing at the start about facebook spying on you: I'm 20, so I feel like my entire life I've been somewhat aware of the world around me, let's say since primary school, I've been surrounded with all this technology that is capable of doing all sorts of things that you don't even know about. I think like I very quickly gave up on privacy because there are so many things that automatically activate your location settings, or get your thumbprint, have voice activation, etc. that at this point the only thing I bother with is just trying to not let things like snapchat for example, broadcast my current location all the time. Isn't it weird that snapchat's default is to broadcast your location, rather than to keep it private and to need you to opt in?
Basically I feel like all major companies like google and facebook, etc. will just be communicating without you knowing it and gathering information from wherever you need to input things in other places on the internet too. There have already been so many things coming out about it, I just feel like I can't win so I might as well give up and not worry about it. Hmm I think this desensitisation is one of their goals
I'm the president of my school's DECA chapter and hearing you talk about your competitive event made me laugh so hard. You two should look up some sample events for the series events because those will be the role plays you're looking for :~) If you each pick 2 or 3 and take some time to come up with a plan it could made a really really great podcast!! The Facebook listening to you thing is relatable. I took a French class like three years ago and I don’t really remember much from it but I can still remember a few things so one day on my new phone, I was sending Snapchat videos of me talking to myself in French, to some friends and then for almost a week straight, TH-cam would only play me ads in French and started suggesting TH-cam channels that were primarily French speaking. Wow I sucked at wording that but you get what I’m saying.

What Julien said is 100% true btw..I was talking to my sister about something I needed to buy..I didn't look it up on facebook or google or whatever and the next day I got an ad for the product I was talking about on facebook..and it wasn't a coincidence cause it wasn't exactly a common product that you would normally find an ad for.

Ashley C I got an ad on TH-cam for a printer that didn't need ink changes. The day or so before my friend came over to print something out but we were out of ink. IT WAS SO SPECIFIC. I think literally everything is spying on us for ad purposes lol. For months I never saw almond milk ads, let alone Almond Breeze ads, but then I went to the store and bought some almond milk and for a week straight all I got was almond breeze ads on every TH-cam video. Another thing is, I always message my friends in English, but one night I was talking to a friend and we were sending messages to each other in Spanish, and that same night ON TH-cam, ALL the ads I started getting were all in Spanish, and it continued for about two weeks.

My instagram account and youtube account aren't linked by an email or nothing i even use youtube only on my laptop and my instagram on my phone. Every time i find someone new on instagram (famous) and follow them or stalk their account I'd get a recommendation on youtube of a video that has to do with them
It’s linked by your coordinates. Companies pays millions for marketing agencies to track and record everything you do online. It’s called retargeting and everything you’ve interacted with is recorded to an extent that would shock you. You know those machine recordings that say”this call will be recorded” yeah it’s not for training, it’s monitored by people like me working in a marketing agency whose sole purpose is to get my clients more consumers. And yeah, I can tell exactly who called, what time, if they searched online later that day, etc.

A little kid can most likely kick in your front door. It doesn't matter what kind of lock you put on it, if you don't replace the screws in the hinges and strike plate, the door isn't actually secured properly into the frame. This is how many or most break-ins happen. The only thing holding the door closed is a 1/4 piece of trim wood that the deadbolt will blast through when the door is kicked. Look up how to replace screws, prevent kick-ins or harden doors. Passive security is another good keyword to look up. There's a lot you can do, including keeping all your stuff inside so burglars can't use it to break in (don't decorate with rocks that could break your window), plant/place pokey stuff in front of places people could hide or climb up and get in, make sure your main $$ valuables (like expensive road bike, guitar, etc.) aren't visible through the window especially at night, and don't leave boxes for valuables (like the packaging from a huge new TV) near your apartment/house or with your address label on them
Those e-locks aren't great but they will probably not make any difference at all in practice for most households because it's still easier to kick the door in or go through the window that isn't even closed all the way
