older video---but I am reworking a mid 80's ECU on a diesel truck...based on this video--I hopped over to Microcenter and bought some...wow! Really great...GM ECU boards really love the stuff...lol
In my experience, desoldering braid is rarely needed for bridges. I wipe the tip of my iron on the brass wool to remove excess solder, apply flux if needed, and drag the iron across the bridge. It will pull the excess solder to the iron, and works 99% of the time. Sometimes, it's necessary to do it twice, or drag the bridge across all the pins so the other pins can each take up some of the excess. Flux is the key to it working.
I couldn't live without SMD adapters boards.... the socket adapters (non-solder) are also great for the most common SMD packages, a little more expensive and package-specific, so certainly less essential - great video!
Great video! Something I've always wondered about is adjustable temperature soldering irons. How do you pick the best temperature for a given situation?
I've been using the same jtip on my iron for a few years now. My go to flux is amtech and solder is leaded kester solder. I use acetone for clean up but you need to be aware of how it works.
Do the flux pens/syringes/pastes need to be refrigerated to extend their shelf life? In the video that was mentioned as required for the flux containing solder paste. I'm only a light hobbyist so I may go many months before soldering or desoldering something, so I've avoided buying any flux thinking it'd expire before I use much of it.
Frankly, I repeated what I was told once. It is either the binders or the flux that have a limited shelf life. (And from experience, it gets very runny after a couple of months at room temp.) But I did look up the datasheets for the Pen and Liquid flux. Their shelf life is much longer than I expected: www.element14.com/community/docs/DOC-95889/l/workbench-wednesday-31-essential-consumables-for-building-circuits#comment-269575
What about washing pcb’s with water? I’ve seen this from a few folks and even some that wash larger boards in a dishwasher. I’ve never done this myself as it just seems wrong, but the results look good on camera and the boards always seem to work. Is there a technical reason that would make this a bad practice?
Hi, I addressed the question here, to give a chance for others on the e14 community to chime in: www.element14.com/community/docs/DOC-95889/l/workbench-wednesday-31-essential-consumables-for-building-circuits#comment-269574

Just picked up 5 litres of 99.99% IPA Isopropyl Alcohol for £19.45 (about $26USD) with free delivery which equates to about £4 per litre, everywhere (in UK) is stocked had gone up to over £10 per litre in march, what prices are people paying in other countries ?
Absolutely the best video yet ! No annoying headbanging music. Just great tips. Thank you.

Surprisingly great/useful tips.

Thank you Sir,very useful tips.

Good stuff
I use the rosin flux, I put a lot in some IPA and let it dissolve then put it in bottle with a needle like lid.

Well now I would like to hear what IC's or what values of resistors everyone should have.

yeah the movie meme was great, as was the video; thanks!
Pretty cool :) Surface mount still looks very annoying lol.
"next I rinse with isopropyl alcohol"... ya as if that stuff isnt liquid gold right now LOL I have not been able to purchase iso since Jan 2020
