Great review my friend. I actually spun this last night. I had a hard to time catching the fire in it. I was FLOORED at how Peter's voice still sounds AMAZING!!! It was like we were still in 1985. The song writing though was a big let down for me. I just couldn't catch any of that "Peter emotion" I have come so accustom to over the decades. As I always say though...good or bad it is ALWAYS great if we are still getting new music from our legends and heroes!

As I've said elsewhere, Gabriel's music always demands attention and repeated listenings.

✨☕️Goodmorning Bro✨Man, this is a great album!! Even the quiet slow songs just reach up and get ya✨His vocals on a lot of the songs sound like his early career days✨Great album artwork too✨✨

Nice review. A great surprise from Peter Gabriel as far as the quality is concerned.I love all his albums and So is my favourite. The new is really cool and somewhere between Us and Up. Surely better than Up. I don't think the different mixes are that discernible , at least on my ears. However, a great treat just before the holidays.

Hi Brendon: Great review with bit of retrospective analysis. Beautiful packaging! I ordered the 2 CD - Blu-Ray version. I really wanted to hear it on Dolby Atmos first. It will not arrive to me until around December 7 though. I am really looking forward to it. It is fun that your opinion evolved over the first several listens. Rock Always! - Heather

I wasn’t following the full moon releases as they came out so when I saw him live back in October he played most of the new tracks. They were all incredibly memorable particularly with the stage set. I remembered all these songs when I listened to this record for the first time. I love it. played all the new Al

I applaud your approach to this review. Sticking with it for multiple listens is a must for any review but, I really like that you took notes on the album, and your evolving feelings on the album, each time through. I listened to the first ten songs, dark side and bright side mixes, as they were released. At that point I thought the album was going to be released soon enough so, I waited for the rest. I was able to listen to them repeatedly over the course of the year and live with them in a way that I hadn't done with any album in a long time. Not many albums remain in my rotation for a year these days but, this one did. I had made Bright and Dark side playlists and added them in as they dropped. I listened to the updated playlists repeatedly each time they were amended. I found these songs to be very poignant. I found myself feeling drawn in by the messages and contemplating very sensitive subjects that I usually avoid. It's a very personal album that I feel is Peter coming to grips with getting old and potentially passing on but, I feel like it's a very positive view into that side of life. I was very moved by So Much and to a somewhat lesser degree Playing For Time but, I didn't feel weighed down by the subject matter. I actually felt a little more receptive to the potential to still make a positive contribution late in life. This album has been very inspiring to me this entire year. I too prefer the Bright side mixes on most of the songs but, there are one or two that I would go with the dark side on. This will be high on my list of best albums this year. I am not a hardcore Peter Gabriel fan at all. To be honest, although I have tacitly enjoyed most of his singles, I've only begrudgingly allowed them to worm their way into my mind over the years. I was an eighties Metalhead and I was into Neo-Classical and Progressive Metal when a lot of his solo stuff was hitting the airwaves. This is not his best work but, for me, it is the one I've bonded with the closest. I'm grateful to Peter for this gift and the way he chose to bestow it upon us. Great review Brendon!

Nice review, thank you. So stoked for more Peter Gabriel music.
You didn't list "passion" the soundtrack to "The Last Temptation of Christ". Fantastic music. Primal and meditative.

I have been enjoying this a ton. Picked up the 2 CD set w/ the Dolby Atmos Blu Ray. Each mix is different enough to necessitate them being included imo and makes for a fun listen spotting the differences. Bright side is my favorite so far with the Atmos a close second. Thanks for the review!

Peter Gabriel was also involved in the Big Blue Ball project; cannot remember if he sang/played on any of the songs but he was the mastermind behind the recordings. It features musicians/singers from around the world performing what is called world music. Worth checkin checking out.

Great review, I'm on the same page for most of your opinions. As all albums by PG it takes a few listenings to appreciate it. Not my favourite album so far but a damn good one. I was not expecting that, for I was not really engaged last months by the singles output. As a whole it makes way more sense. Next fun job for me is to compare the mixes.

I think having a different running order for the dark mix would have been an excellent idea.
I could tell there was greatness in this album on the first listen, and with subsequent listenings I could tell, this was spectacular.

Haven't got it yet, but if it has the name Peter Gabriel on the cover its got to be special and excellent. Saw him live in concert and it he and the band were brilliant. Great show at the Hollywood Bowl. The show just confirmed just how magical his songs and presentation is. If you haven't seen Peter live, put it top on your list of things to do.

Great detailed review. I love the first song, but am less enthused about the rest. However, I will give it many listens and see how my opinion changes over time.

My definitive versions are the ones that came out. “Olive Tree” released the Dark side mix first I would put that version in my PG playlist. This way I have the running order and the tracks the way they came out. But I do agree having the album come out the way the tracks were released would have been great. End of small Rant Brendon.

great review, I agree, those single releases didn't really grab me, but as an album, the effect is totally different. Also, I found that the sound quality of the streaming service where we first heard those singles, is no match for an official flac download.

Brendon, as an crazed fan of everything Genesis, this one was a no-brainer for me. I ordered it when it was first announced in October. Yes I did all the tracks however never listened to it all the way through. But “Road to Joy” has a “Kiss that Frog” vibe to it. It’s like he copied himself. Now I can go listen to the album in full. The way I worked the tracks, I have a running order the way they came out at the full moon either Bright or Dark mixes. That gives the album a great listen. When I first heard I/O it didn’t impress me to be honest. “Just a part of everything” what a bunch of garbage. I really thought that track should be more epic like as if to say this is the title track people. I actually taped the obi strip onto the cd cover on the side. Looks pretty decent. Now I have 2nd thoughts about it too late. Lol it’ll do. I could go on with this album I heard there might be more songs coming I might not do this again. I’ll listen to the songs I may not. See what’s out next year around the same time. It’s like a Chili Peppers release a few years ago by now. What ever is next I hope it won’t be another 20+ years.

Maybe the 4th album meant, "call security", if someone like the figure on the cover turns up at your front door.

As a Tool fanatic, I feel the w(eigh)ait. Though, not so much as that 😂. And here I believed I was The Patient.
Edit: 'Secret World,' the live DVD is my idea of Peter Gabriel perfection.

I listened to most of the bright mix this morn and I think it is good, but too laid back. His voice sounds great, but I think the music is just too mellow. I actually have not listened to lot of his solo stuff after So which let me down a bit. I will listen to the other mix and also will backtrack a bit and listen to some of the older stuff after So and maybe that will give me a better perspective of where this album is at.
